What: Annual UMD Art Guild Silent Art Auction

The Art Guild Silent Auction, an annual student tradition, not only showcases new and personal artwork by UMD student artists but is also a unique opportunity for the public to collect original (and affordable) work from young and emerging artists. All minimum bids will be between $5 and $100. Refreshments will be served during the course of the auction.

The UMD Art Guild is the only cross-collegiate and cross-disciplinary arts organization on campus. Art Guild provides an outlet for students to go to galleries, create art, show art, critique the work of peers, and educate themselves about the contemporary art world and what students are doing today. Art Guild makes annual trips to Minneapolis and Chicago for gallery hops and educational and cultural enrichment. Art Guild meets every Tuesday from 4–6pm in the Tweed Museum coffee bar.

The Tweed Museum of Art is one of six units in the School of Fine Arts, UMD. The University of Minnesota is an equal opportunity educator and employer.

Free and open to the public, the Tweed Museum of Art is located in Ordean Court on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth. Museum hours are: Tuesday 9a.m.–8 p.m., Wednesday–Friday 9 a.m. –4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 1–5 p.m.

Current members of the Duluth Art Institute are able to submit work created since January 1, 2007 in the Annual Membership Exhibition in the Great Hall of the Depot. Work will be accepted from 10 am – 5 pm January 15-18, 2008, at the Art Institute offices on the 4th floor of the Depot. Two-dimensional work must be limited to 30� or less per side, including matt and/or frame; three – dimensional work must be 42� or less in diameter including stand or base. Wall-mounted works must not exceed 25 pounds.

Duluth Teachers Credit Union (DTCU) offers an exciting opportunity for local artists to display their works in our lobbies each month.

We are looking for artists for the upcoming year for our 2 office lobbies.

We have the adjustable Walker Display system for hanging framed prints. We also have countertop/table displays for pottery and other forms of art.

Artists may have prices on their works but we ask that the potential buyer contact artist directly to process the sale.

We also contact the local papers to announce the show in our lobby as well as have a write up about the artist in our quarterly newsletter.

DTCU has a lot of traffic coming through our lobbies making this an excellent opportunity for the public to see artists’ works.

The Walker Art Center is looking for film/video submissions for the February 2nd Free First Saturday family day event called “Minnesota-made on mnartist.org.�

Films should be 3-5 minutes in length and appropriate for kids ages 6-12. Projects can be submitted in DVD, Beta, or 16- and 35-mm film format. All films should be clearly labeled with the title, artist’s name, year of production, and the run time. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you would like your film returned. Art Shanty Projects is once again looking for artists willing to make art for 5 weeks this winter and live in a little hut. The event has generated some major press in the past and looks rather entertaining. Entry proposals are due by October 5.

Minneapolis Public Library announces a statewide call for post-secondary student artists enrolled in a Minnesota college or university as of October 1, 2007 to submit digital images of altered books for a juried exhibition January-March 2008 in a locked display case in the entrance hall of Minneapolis Central Library. The student exhibit will be juried by Chip Schilling, Indulgence Press. Deadline: October 17

The exhibition will be part of a citywide series of workshops, exhibitions and programs capped by the annual convention of the Public Library Association in Minneapolis, March 25-29, 2008. Media releases, electronic and printed materials will direct visitors to all exhibition venues.

Altered Books Definition: According to the International Society of Book Artists, an altered book is any book, old or new, that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art. An altered book can be rebound, painted, cut, burned, folded, added to, collaged in, gold-leafed, rubber stamped, drilled or otherwise adorned.
