Resolving the XDCam EX
Please note, this blog has been archived and now lives at www.discretecosine.comWhile doing the exposure tests, I also shot a resolution chart. Unfortunately, the only chart I could find maxed out at 800 lines, but you still get a nice idea of the quality of this camera.
Click for a full raster TGA. These are shot at an exposure of F8.

700Vx800H according to the 4:3 inappropriate chart. 800x16/9x3/4=
1066Hx800V resolution corrected for 16:9 chart
actual resolution is 1066 lines H x 800 lines vertical
This is unbelievable for such an inexpensive camera
Note that MartsuSHITas' Panasonic Varicam records 960x720 pixels. It is so much last century! It has similar low light performance and does not reach the XDCAM EX resolution even in vertical, while witha lens, LCD, Battery pack, microphone, etc. it costs more than 10x as much as this ingenious Sony.
Its interseting how Barry Green loves the HVX etc.

Also note that the resolution is better at 24p than at 60i (look at the center 800 resolution lines) and that there are much less color artifacts in the corners in the rays of the circles at 24p also.
Great resolution.
