Cultural Colonization

The chapter "Branding: A Uniquely American Phenomenon" states that European kids are anxious to see this new form of cultural colonization.

Drawing upon your understanding of History (and Art History), explain colonization. Then go on to intrepret the statement (above). What do you think is meant by cultural colonization? What impacts do you think it can have on the culture?

In my opinion, Colonization refers to when someone or something moves into a new territory attempting to stay there or maybe even overthrow the current thing (or trend).
So, Cultural Colonization could be the movement or transition of a culture. In that sense, I think that the 'European Kids' are anxious to see where their culture moves too. Or perhaps it means that they are excited for the new 'American' styles to emerge in Europe, so that they can be cool and hip. (just like me!)

Colonization is when a group of anything forms a community and becomes the majority.

Cultural colonization happens when individuals with a common loyalty, to a product or brand, to a style of music or a video game system come together and feel part of a group or cultural movement. Examples: Blog and file sharing virtual communities - Halo 3 video game(Xbox360) - the Hippies from the late 60s - Cubism - Nazis...

Colonization through out history can bee seen as the Europeans coming to North and South America and taking over the place and people, the missionaries going to Africa, Britain’s control of India. Through out art history colonization can been seen as a local art form spreading to other areas. As in the Renaissance, not just the art from, but also the way of thinking, which started in Italy then spread though out the rest of Europe. This can also been seen as a form of cultural colonization. Another example of colonization through out art history can been seen through the spread of Modernism, which started in Europe in the early 1900’s, came to the U.S. through the Armory Show of 1913.
Cultural colonization is when a local culture, way of life, what is eaten and used, way of thinking, has expanded beyond its own borders and crosses into other cultures. Whether it is a couple of hundred miles away, or half the world away. Impacts of cultural colonization can be both good and bad. Everyone should learn about and experience all different types of cultures. However, when one huge culture takes over and erases local cultures, erases histories, this can be seen as a harmful impact. This is seen today when the culture of the U.S. is seen and experienced all over the world; the golden arches on every continent, kids all over the world wearing and making Nike shoes. When one culture takes over another culture the one on the bottom is lost, maybe forever. It may still be there, maybe, but will be experienced by only a few; it also may try to come back, but through time it will be lost.

For me colonization is an extension of political or economic to control over an area by states whose nationals have occupied the area and usually possess over the native population. Cultural colonization refers to internal domination by one group and its culture or ideology over others. It has an effective impact into another culture. It soon will wipeout other culture heritage of that nation, for instant, Japanese’s culture had almost totally dominated by the West.

Colonization throughout history has been when one group (usually with more money and power) controls the "weaker" group and takes over the original group. Colonization is a nice way of saying conquer and rule.

I think American culture with our brands, corporations, and rules will (if not already) take conquer and rule consumerism worldwide. It is our job as designers to either aid in the peaceful take over or rebel against it. The McDonalds' of the world don't have to win out over the small family-run mom and pop businesses.

I think its extremely interesting to see how European kids are excited about the American styles. Some of the highest fashions and trends are started in Europe, before America can even pick up on some of the trends. Its as if the European kids see America as a cool and hip country with lots of power, technology, hollywood, etc. They see things on tv and in magazines that advertise American brands and they want it all to feel cool and hip (by wearing name brands). I agree with Evan about Colonization. I think it is about going into a new area and bringing in or changing the current trend or style.

My definition of Cultural Colinization is overthroughing the current culture by luring or persuading the people of the region to buy into your cultural customs. Making unhealthy American fast food chains accessible to the japanese youth or marketing Nike to europeans is like dangling meat in front of a lion, they want to get what you have. Everyone wants to keep upp with the Jones', America is the Jones' and alot of countries want to get what we have for culture no matter if that means leaving their customs behind.
