Alternative Publishing Models

A patron inquired yesterday about the open access publisher, Public Library of Science (PLoS). He wanted to know specifically whether there was an institutional discount, and if so, what it was. In case others might encounter similar questions in the future, I wanted to share what I found.

There are institutional discounts for both PLoS and Biomed Central (BMC). The discount for PLoS is 10% off the author's publication charge; BMC is 15%. This information can most easily be found on the Alternative Publishing Models page of the Transforming Scholarly Communications' website: http://www.lib.umn.edu/scholcom/altpubmo.phtml, which also provide a nice, concise overview of the many publishing options currently available to researchers.
