Please see email regarding maintenance work on the Cochrane Library

Dear Customer,

We are contacting you to provide you with advanced warning of some planned maintenance and downtime that will affect products on Blackwell Reference Online and The Cochrane Library. This maintenance work will ensure the websites Wiley hosts are more robust and less susceptible to unplanned outages. In order to perform this upgrade it is necessary to take the site offline for up to 12 hours over a weekend. After consultation we have identified the least disruptive date for all our customers as the weekend of April 13th/14th.

The websites will be unavailable for no more than 12 hours starting at 9pm London time / 4pm New York time on Saturday 13th April 2013. During this time, due to the nature of the work we cannot show a maintenance note so anyone trying to access the site will get a “Site not found” or similar message.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to you and your website users.

Dear ERIC Community,

We have currently disabled access to many ERIC full-text PDFs due to the discovery of personally identifiable information in some documents. A team is in place to check each PDF to see if it contains personally identifiable information. Due to the quality of many of the documents, a large portion of the search has to be done by hand. This will take several weeks, but our primary concern is to protect the privacy of individuals.

To minimize the burden on our users, we will prioritize searching the PDFs that users request. If you would like to request a PDF to be returned online, please fill out this form, which requires only the document’s ERIC record number and your email address. Full-text PDFs will be returned on a rolling basis. We will be posting the list of newly released documents here.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and want to thank you for bearing with us through this unexpected delay.

The ERIC Team

We're gotten two reports of users connecting to Ovid MEDLINE through our website and getting an Ovid login screen that they can't get past. The problem is the same in different browsers. This is puzzling, but using a VPN solves the problem. If you get this question, tell them to use a VPN (download and installation instructions are here: https://www.oit.umn.edu/vpn/downloads-guides/index.htm) to ensure access.

Also, please collect some details and pass them along to me, in case this turns out to be a more widespread problem:
1. Mac or PC
2. Browser? (try multiple browsers)
3. When did the problem start?
4. Does this happen on campus, off campus, or both?

Thanks,
Liz

New Names for 9 Specialty Archives Journals Starting January 1, 2013

The nine specialty Archives Journals in The JAMA Network will change their names effective January 1, 2013, part of the ongoing evolution to more closely interconnect the scientific journals published by the American Medical Association.

The journals will be renamed JAMA Dermatology, JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Neurology, JAMA Ophthalmology, JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, JAMA Pediatrics, JAMA Psychiatry and JAMA Surgery.

New ISSNs are available now on our site. The name changes will coincide with the first major print redesign of JAMA Network journals in 20 years.

“While we all realize that changes in the names of our journals, which have been revered for decades, may raise some concerns among our loyal readers and authors, we believe that standardization of format and integration into The JAMA Network will justify these changes in the long run,” JAMA editor in chief Howard Bauchner M.D., and the nine specialty journal editors write in an editorial formally announcing the name changes.

The covers of the renamed journals will continue to reference their former Archives titles for several months following the January change.

Pilot Fund Available to Authors for Open Access Publishing

Recently, the Libraries and the Office of the Vice President for Research teamed up to establish a pilot fund to help UMN authors underwrite the costs of making their works openly accessible. We've now gotten budgets and eligibility requirements all lined up, and applications are now open!

To apply for funding, visit http://z.umn.edu/oafundapp! Works will be reviewed only for whether they meet the eligibility requirements, and funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until exhausted.

NIH Compliance Policy Strengthened

Beginning in Spring 2013, NIH will begin backing up their policy regarding providing public access to NIH grant funded research by withholding grant money.

Hello,

Please see announcement from the SciVerse Team-

The next release for ScienceDirect and Scopus is scheduled for Saturday, December 1 and will focus on infrastructure improvements. We are not expecting significant downtime, though some products may experience minor disruptions. The Hub and RSS feeds for ScienceDirect and Scopus will be unavailable during the times specified at the end of this message.

An update that we are particularly excited to announce is internet browser support to include Google Chrome for PC and now support Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox for Mac. We also will continue to support Firefox and IE 7, 8, and 9 for PC; however, with this release, we will cease to support IE6 for Scopus.

Though complete support for iOS and Android browsers has not been added, bugs have been fixed there as well and the user experience will be improved for users of mobile devices. For example, the Scopus refine results will now function properly on Safari.

For Hub: the downtime by region is expected as follows:

New York: Saturday, December 1 at 11:15 AM EST until Saturday, December 1 at 1:00 PM EST
Singapore: Sunday, December 2 12:15 AM SGT until Sunday, December 2 at 02:00 AM SGT
Corresponding UTC (GMT): Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 4:15 PM until Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 6:00 PM
For RSS feeds on Scopus: the downtime by region is expected as follows:

New York: Saturday, December 1 at 7:30 AM EST until Saturday, December 1 10:00 AM EST
Singapore: Saturday, December 1 at 8:30 PM SGT until Saturday, December 1 at 11:00 PM SGT
Corresponding UTC (GMT): Saturday, December 1 at 12:30 PM until Saturday, December 1 at 3:00 PM
For RSS feeds on ScienceDirect: the downtime by region is expected as follows:

New York: Saturday, December 1 at 7:30 AM EST until Saturday, December 1 08:45 AM EST 1345
Singapore: Saturday, December 1 at 8:30 PM SGT until Saturday, December 1 at 9:45 PM SGT

Hello,

Springer is migrating to a new platform. We have received reports on error messages and online access problems. I haven’t received any information on when this will be resolved yet.

Error message:

The web page or web server you are trying to reach is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused, please try again later.

off-campus error message:

To allow http://link.springer.com/journal/volumesAndIssues/* to be used in a starting point URL, your EZproxy administrator must first authorize the hostname of this URL in the config.txt file. Within this database’s section of config.txt, either the following line must be added: Host link.springer.com or, alternatively, a RedirectSafe for this host or domain may be appropriate. After editing config.txt, the EZproxy server must be restarted to make changes take effect.

Hopefully, we will receive some follow up information soon!

Amy

If patrons call asking for information about accessing UpToDate here are some things you can tell them:
1)	There is no remote access for UpToDate.
2)	The only place that you can be guaranteed access is in the Bio-Medical Library.
3) Access within the Academic Health Center (AHC) is inconsistent. Access is determined by IP addresses and we do not have a list of static IP ranges for the AHC, the dynamic IP ranges that we do have include buildings outside of the "designated sites" permitted in our license agreement. There are comparable products such as Dynamed and Access Medicine that are available remotely. The link to Dynamed is located just below the link to UpToDate in the Quick Links box on our webpage. The link to Access Medicine is located under 'A' in the alphabetic list of Other Health-related Indexes.
4)	If patrons want to know why we don't have remote Access to UpToDate, explain that UpToDate has extremely restrictive licensing conditions and is very expensive. We currently pay around 12,000 dollars a year for UpToDate, if we were to get remote access for all potential users the price would jump to around 250,000 dollars a year, which is obviously cost prohibitive.
5)	If the patron is still unhappy after you have relayed this information to them and wishes to speak to someone else, you can refer the patron to Nicole Theis-Mahon but only after you have relayed the information discussed above to them.

Thank you for contacting RefWorks-COS Technical Services.

Recently released updates to the RefWorks program have inadvertently introduced some issues that are impacting users. Issues currently reported and in the process of being resolved:

Users are reporting getting a blank page at login when they finish creating a new account. Access to established accounts are not affected.

Additional reports on performance issues when accessing folders under certain conditions. For example, after an import, trying to access the Last Imported folder spins indefinitely.

We are working on these issues at this time and will report to this list as soon as they are resolved.

Thank you for using RefWorks-COS.
