SciFinder news to share with depts: new site.prf + end to access via software approaching

Repost from the Science Librarians List....

*******

Hi everyone,

This is a heads up that a new site.prf file will be distributed for off-campus access to the client software for security reasons related to recent unauthorized access to U of M user accounts. Within the next couple of days, when you open SciFinder off campus, you will see a message (http://sciweb.lib.umn.edu/chem/SFSCredentialsMsg.jpg) with instructions on getting the new file. An automated system issues the new file, and you should receive it immediately after emailing the address in the message. (The address shown is for Windows; there is a different one for Macs.)

Also, I wanted to remind everyone that access to SciFinder via the client software will be phased out around the end of this year and only web access will be available. I don't yet have a firm date from CAS, but I will let you know when I do.

Let me know if you have questions!
Meghan

News item on PubMed redesign

I've updated the news item on the home page about the PubMed redesign. I've included a link to a short video tutorial from the U of Manitoba on the differences between the old and new.

The news item also directs users to ask for help with this to the ref desk phone or medref account.

SciFinder Scholar web version

FYI - info from Meghan Lafferty about the web version of SciFinder. The registration steps are also on the website where people link to SciFinder.

**************
Hi everyone,

The web version of SciFinder Scholar is now available, and access via the client software will end in late 2010. Until we move completely to the web, our 17 seats will be split between the web and software versions. I am monitoring how many people are turned away each day and changing the allocation as needed. Keep in mind that weekday afternoons are the busiest times. The web version still requires you to use VPN off-campus.

- You need to register to use it.
- Log in to https://www.lib.umn.edu/user/x500.
- Click on http://www.lib.umn.edu/get/16109 (or paste it into the address bar in your browser).
- If you come to an Access Denied page, click on the "Please login..." link.
- Use your umn.edu e-mail address when filling out the registration form, .
- Because only current University of Minnesota students, faculty, and staff are permitted to use SciFinder Scholar, please do not share registration/log-in information.

Please share this with your departments (where relevant). Let me know if you have additional questions.
Meghan

Slides from yesterday's SciFinder webinar

I'm attaching the PDF of the PowerPoint slides from the SciFinder webinar that a few of us viewed yesterday. The meat of the demonstration was in the live demo that is not captured in the slides, but the slides give helpful background info about SciFinder so I thought it might be of interest. Enjoy!
