New England Journal of Medicine - some content not available to institutions

There have been comments recently on the NEJM site regarding access to PPT slides and slide sets.

From NEJM:

PowerPoint Slides and SlideSets are not included in a site license subscription, but for a limited time, we are offering institutional users an opportunity to access PPT slides free for 6 months, when they create an individual My NEJM account or sign-in to their individual account."
http://www.nejm.org/page/institution/frequently-asked-questions

Our institutional subscription does include access to videos. Keep in mind you must click on the article link in order to view the video. The table of contents only indicates if the article has a video it doesn't include a direct link.

Scientific American & Nature Publishing Group

As you may have heard, Nature Publishing Group has acquired Scientific American.

The CIC has decided against licensing this product due to the huge price increase NPG levied upon the takeover.

For more on the issues, see the article in Library Journal "More Dismay About Scientific American: CIC Libraries Reject New Site License":

http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6713888.html

***There have been a few questions concerning the most recent March 2010 online issue of Scientific American on EBSCOhost. Ebsco has been informed of the missing full text and will notify us when there has been any changes or resolution to the issue. The current license with Ebsco Publishing expires May 2010.

Passwords on Facebook

Just an FYI: the medlibs Twitterverse is buzzing right now because someone found a Facebook group where library proxies and journal passwords are being posted. There are discussion threads for specific schools (Duke and Indiana are two), although UMN isn't listed. The group is called "Medical Password" and can be seen here:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6251647781

There's also a private group that looks like it may do the same thing (just search for "medical password"). Beth Whipple/Indiana have alerted Facebook, according to her twitter post, so the groups might go down soon.

Subject: FYI: Taylor & Francis journals available through Informaworld remain
slow to load

Hi-

We just received (and answered) a QuestionPoint query from a patron and
Emily Reimer regarding a Taylor & Francis journal in which the articles
were taking a long time to load.

Unfortunately, this has been an issue for quite some time with Taylor &
Francis' platform, Informaworld. Yumiko did contact them back in June
and received a "we're working on it" response, but the nothing has
really improved. I will try contacting them again to let them know that
this remains a problem but I don't anticipate an immediate improvement
as that would probably take upgrades in equipment or software that take
time.

So I just wanted to get the word out to staff that handle questions and
problems from patrons that journals available through Informaworld
generally take an inordinately long time to load and unfortunately, it's
a problem with this publisher that they haven't been able to fix.

Thanks,
Chris

Informa Healthcare journals to unite on single platform

There was a question regarding Drug Metabolism Reviews linking to full text in PubMed. The most recent volume is not available on the Informa site via Find It. The new volume is on the InformaPharma site via a full text link in PubMed, however, we cannot access the full text. I am working with Informa to get access for this title. If you find any other Informaworld titles with online access issues, please let me know.

Announcement from Informa:

Informa Healthcare's peer-reviewed medical titles will be joining the company's pharmaceutical science titles to form one, united platform for drug discovery and clinical medicine on www.InformaAccess.com .

This new development combines the medicine and pharmaceutical science titles to simplify the customer experience in one new, easy to use, robust platform that will deliver online content and archive material from more than 170 journals.

All of the journals will utilize the online content management and delivery system provided by Atypon Systems, Inc. - a platform provider for over 70 information providers including JSTOR, New England Journal of Medicine and the American Chemical Society.

The new platform offers the option of online trials, advanced searching, alerting, and single article purchases. The beta site on the new platform is scheduled for release in summer 2009 and the complete transition will continue through to the end of this calendar year. There will be a dual-hosting period with the informaworld platform, which currently hosts the medicine content, through 2009 allowing for a gradual migration, and the site will provide reports and statistics to help subscribers analyze usage.

We encourage all feedback throughout the transition and will do everything possible to make the transition as seamless and easy as possible.
