Stress: A Part of our Everyday Lives

Stress, at least for me, is a part of our daily lives and during the college years the stress of finals, interviews and social events seems never-ending. Whether it's the little hassles in life or the large events, stress plays an important role.

That's why I think the topic of stress is the most important topic we learned about in psychology and learning how to cope with stress is something I know I will use in the future.

I have always looked at meditation and thought, why would I ever do that? When I was 12 years old my soccer coach made it a team ritual to meditate before our state games. I remember sitting in the grass and thinking well this is boring and pointless. However, after reading about it in Psychology I learned that meditation helps to train attention and awareness. It actually heightens creativity, empathy, alertness and decreases anxiety and recurrences of depression. Although scientists are unsure why meditation has these positive effects, many people seem to benefit from it.

So now, rather than isolating myself or under-eating when I'm stressed out, I have the knowledge to seek out other stress coping activities... like meditation!

I also found it beneficial to learn about coping with stress. As the book mentioned, aerobic exercise can help reduce stress levels, and I have found it helpful to go for a run as a way of alleviating stress as finals approach.

This is great! I have read about meditation as well, but always seem to forget about it when I really need it. Even though I haven't tried meditation much, I find that spending time alone thinking or taking a walk often helps me when I'm stressed.

Not only is meditation good for getting rid of stress, It's great for falling asleep! It's crazy how calming your mind down can calm your body, and vice versa.

As college students, I definitely agree stress management is an important topic for us. We're faced with too many stressors throughout the year to even count. Because of the amount of stress I think it's really important for each of us to figure out what helps us reduce our stress levels the best. Personally, I like to use running and yoga to help with my stress. It's different for everyone, and I think as we grow into adults, it becomes more and more important to learn how to handle stress effectively.

I've never really considered meditating as a means of coping with stress. I have done yoga a few times in the past, but found it rather boring. Everyone around me seemed very into it and I just couldn't get into that state of mind. But after learning about how meditating can help with stress, it makes me want to try yoga again or another form of meditation. Perhaps it will help me deal with everyday stress.

When I played Lacrosse in highschool, we did a similar "stretch" that we called "dead-mans" before every game or practice where we just relax. Now it is funny to look back and think that the stretch may have actually done us some good instead of feeding our laziness urges.
