Science outreach opportunity with elementary school students

The Association of Multicultural Scientists (AMS) will be holding the second annual STEM Academy on June 5th, 2010 from 10 am -- 2 pm at Coffman Union at the University of Minnesota. (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.) This event focuses on getting elementary school children excited about the sciences through hands-on experiments. Last year we had nearly 100 kids from around the Twin Cities attend, and we're hoping for an even larger turnout this year.

We need volunteers to run experimental stations. The kids will be at each station for 15 minutes, so short experiments focusing on a specific area or scientific principle are ideal. We have a list of possible experiments, but we encourage you to lead an experiment in your area of interest/expertise!

We are encouraging scientists at every stage of their education to participate in the event--the more role models for aspiring scientists the better!

If you would like to volunteer to help at this year's event, please email us at ams@umn.edu or contact one of the AMS officers listed below!

The level of social isolation is increasing at an alarming rate in our country. While statistics differ, clinicians have noted that the number of people who don't regularly speak of significant matters with anyone (in the last 6 months) has increased to as much as 25 percent of the U.S. population. This is an epidemic of alarming proportion, with crucial effects to both physical and emotional health. Join author and psychiatrist Jacqueline Olds, MD, as she explores social isolation and the importance of human connections to our health and wellness. Dr. Olds will discuss a prescription for forming community and the importance of intergenerational discussion, to restore perspective and achieve balance in our health and wellness.
