Volunteer Opportunities Working With Children:

  
Childhood Development Assistant

Work with children (ages 6 weeks to 5 years) from Resource, Inc's Family Program in Minneapolis through educational programming and activities that will prepare children for kindergarten.  Includes supervising children, assisting staff, planning activities, and setup and cleanup of room.
 
Children's Activities Assistants for Groups

Help with planned recreational activities for children ages 3-17 at People Serving People in Minneapolis.  May involve working one-on-one or help facilitate arts and crafts, games and field trips.  Experience working with children is preferred.  Training provided.  Daytime and evening hours available!
 
Study Buddy

Study Buddies is a youth mentoring and academic support program that provides one on one mentoring and academic assistance to school age residents of CommonBond Communities of St Paul.  Make an impact by helping with their schoolwork - and being a good role model.  Available at communities throughout the Metro area and Greater Minnesota.

Annual Event Phone Sales Volunteer

WomenVenture of St Paul is looking for talented and passionate individuals to reach out to potential sponsors and sell event sponsorship packages for the upcoming WomenVenture Fall Leadership Event in November.  Requires a commitment to agency mission, strong communication skills, and attendance at a training session.  Work from home or agency office.
 
Parking Lot Assistance

Minnesota Brass is looking for 4 to 6 parking helpers for Drum Beauty (drum & bugle show in Stillwater) on June 27th from 4:30 - show start.

Puppy Raiser

Raise a Service Dog candidate from as young as 8 weeks until it is called in for advanced training at 12-18 months by Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota in Minneapolis.  Socialize, obedience train, and teach appropriate behavior.  Attend monthly meetings.  Donate food, basic vet care, toys, treats, and loving home. Some supplies provided.
 
Friday Morning Shopper - Maplewood

Enjoy shopping?  Grocery shop for 2-4 hours twice per month or on a weekly basis.  Store to Door meets Fridays between 6am-10am at a Maplewood store.  Six month time commitment required, they can accommodate most schedules.  Training and orientation provided.  Shoppers aged 16 or 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
 
Community Education Volunteer

The Sexual Violence Center in Minneapolis needs a volunteer to help education the community.  Field education requests, schedule, solicit and give presentations, provide crisis counseling, and hold one office shift per week.  Requires attending free 43 hour volunteer training and a 3 ½ hour community education session.  Intermittent physical activity including lifting 25 lbs or more.
 
Computer Mentor

Assist Restart Inc clients to achieve their goals of computer proficiency in an informal one on one setting in Minneapolis.  The computer skills that clients learn will help them further towards completing a skill to help them in the community.

Invitation to Indian Health Fair

Asian Indian Family Wellness /SEWA-AIFW, in collaboration with Hindu Mandir as well as other agencies, will hold a 'Grand Health plus Resource Fair' on August 7, 2010 from 9am to 3pm at the Maple Grove Hindu Mandir community center's Nath Auditorium, hallway and surrounding rooms.  Open to the public. Individuals, families and children are welcome. Free Event!

Activities at the Fair will consist of 4 broad areas.

1. Educational Seminars: Speakers from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and Medicine have been arranged. Dr. John Finnegan, Dean, School of Public Health has agreed to provide opening remarks. Dr. Jon Hallberg, medical commentator on NPR will be key note speaker and will talk about common immigrant health and medical issues. Following this several specialist in various fields will give brief talks about frequently encountered health problems, e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease, eye and skin problems, neurological problems including Parkinson's.

2. Medical Screening ( lipid profile, diabetes profile, anemia profile) will be available on the spot, free of cost.

3. Medical consultation in private rooms with SEWA-AIFW volunteer physicians will be available in various specialties. The University of Minnesota experts and other physicians will be available and work together with SEWA-AIFW Volunteer Physicians.

4. Resource Fair will consist of various Government and private plus Non Profit agencies dis003@umn.eduplaying their services. Medical Kiosks by speakers to answer any questions will be at hand as well.

Volunteer Opportunities Working With Youth:

 

Homework Helper
Do you enjoy teaching and working with children? Volunteer in Aeon's affordable-housing residences in Minneapolis!  They need volunteers to assist children and adults with computers and homework in our community resource rooms.  Flexible schedule including afternoons, evenings, and weekends.  Must commit to two, two-hour shifts per month.

Join the Minnesota Children's Museum's team in St Paul as a Playologist and create fun, playful experiences for visiting children!  Help out in the Museum's lobby with arrivals and facilitate Big Fun - a high-energy activity that gives kids the chance to shake out their sillies.  Three hour shifts available Tuesday thru Fridays during the day.

Beat the Heat Kits
Many people staying in Our Saviour's Housing Emergency Shelter in Minneapolis spend a lot of time outside and are vulnerable to the summer heat and sunshine.  They like to give each resident a bag containing summer essentials: sunscreen, water bottle, etc. You can make one kit or make several! This is a great project to do as a family, office, or congregation.
 
Blood Drive Canteen Host

Organize NEW BLOOD DRIVES at your place of employment for Memorial Blood Centers of the Twin Cities.  Does a group you belong to have the capacity to give?  Drives must include a minimum of 40 registered donors.  Minimum age for volunteers is 16.  Minimum age with supervision is 14.

 

Handyperson Volunteer Opportunities:

 

Yard Helper

Do you love helping keep yards clean and neat?  Help and teach Restart Inc. clients in Minneapolis how to take care of the yard for the summer.  Assist cleaning and other needs in their exterior setting.
 
Handyperson Adult Volunteer

Invest your time and talent by helping seniors in a St Paul neighborhood maintain their independence and stay in their homes.  Do minor household repairs using your own tools on a on call basis.  Must have patience and be trustworthy with good listening and verbal skills.  Requires orientation and paperwork.

Friendly Visitor - Eden Prairie
Senior Community Services, Senior Outreach is looking for a male friendly visitor to befriend an elderly man in Eden Prairie.  Friendly Visitors visit one on one with seniors who are lonely and in need of a friend.  They visit the senior and share ideas and stories. Orientation, supervision and support provided by social workers.
 
Job Search Center Assistants

Assist staff in Resource Inc.'s Job Search Center in St Paul to ensure all job seekers are receiving the help they need to succeed.  Includes assisting with resumes, cover letters, job searching, emailing, and explaining computer tasks like copy/paste, formatting, etc.  Business hours Monday thru Friday, 2-3 hours/week, multiple locations available!
 
Weekday Receptionist

Ebenezer Minneapolis Campus is looking for individuals with outgoing personalities to answer phones, transfer calls to 3-4 staff members, welcome visitors and write-up work orders for residents at the Ebenezer Loren on Park Apartments.  They currently need volunteers on Wednesdays from 3-5pm and Fridays from 2-4pm.
