Are you in charge of your decisions?

I decided to discuss the topic brought up at the end of the video BBC Horizon-The Secret You, regarding the question of who is in charge of your decisions, your conscious self or your unconscious self? I thought that this was very interesting and to look further into this I really recommend watching the video starting at 47:53 until the end (58:41). Since these posts aren't supposed to get too long I won't discuss all that he does but instead I'll assume those reading this have seen it and I am just reflecting on the topic.

For one, I can't believe that technology is at a place where they are even able to test these theories and get answers to some very complex topics. I am not sure where researchers will go with these kind of findings because it seems so crazy that if we are able to see that decisions are made six seconds prior to conscious awareness, who is to say that we are committed to making that decision?

I am sure that there are many questions such as this that are explored and I would like to look into other theories. I came across another claim that maybe we are not decision makers at all and consciousness is actually the result of our unconscious processes? I really don't know what to think about these kind of questions since I can't relate to these scientists levels of knowledge but that is why it's cool watching things like this to get a sense of what they work on.

I thought this was an interesting image to think about, since I wasn't sure of a picture for this direct topic.

The fact that our brains have made a decision prior to when we are even conscious about it is really surprising. I find it interesting how our unconscious already knows what is going to happen; but how does it know? Through past experiences or basic generalizations? I'm not sure I will ever really believe this but if it is true it proves that the brain can do more things than I had thought.

This subject was brought up in the lecture the other day and I found it really fascinating. The idea that we never are really conscious of the reasons we do things is a bit unsettling. I would be curious to know if this applies to all our decisions or just certain ones.

What do you think the implications of these findings are? Do you think it makes a difference if our unconscious mind is really making the decisions? If you liked this, you might enjoy reading "The Illusions of Conscious Will".
