HCG diet.jpg
There is a new diet fad called the HCG diet. It consists of taking an injection or drop of HCG and eating only 500 calories per day. It claims to give you more energy, burn your fat, and decrease your craving for sweets. This helps you lose weight very quickly. I read three articles about it and they all had conflicting claims about the diet.

It is pretty easy to identify how good the information is in each of the articles. The first 2 seem pretty bias about the information and even have a place to click to purchase the diet supplement. They claim that there is no better way for you to shed unwanted pounds. It claims that it is a very fast and very safe way to lose weight. The last article showed the harmful effects of the HCG diet. It tells the reader that you should look somewhere else for weight loss because of all the negative aspects of using it. It shows how there is no scientific evidence supporting the diet. It even quotes the FDA in saying that no evidence has been presented to substantiate the claims made for HCG as a weight-loss aid. This was the only fact with information to back up its claim. This is why I think that this article is more accurate than the others. I'm curious to see what other people think about this new debated diet.

I think its crazy how people seriously think things like this work. I believe the only real healthy way to lose weight is by eating healthy and exercising regularly. There have been so many different kinds of "Miracle" weight lose programs "that really work" and I was not shocked one bit. However I am shocked at how people would inject something into their bodies to help lose weight especially because it is not FDA approved. I don't know about you but I would never inject something into my body! and eating only 500 calories a day! Thats just crazy! All in all good post!

First, I want to ask what "HCG" is. This AD completely biased and exaggerated. If I take just 500calories a day, how a pill give me "extra" energy? If the AD means burning fat gives you energy, it also does not make sense because fat is not easily burned by taking a pill. However, limited calorie intake would help an individual to loose a fat. As gregg078 believe, I also think that the best way to loose weight is eating less and exercising more.

There are so many things wrong with this claim. (1) Losing weight is all about energy input and output. I'm fairly certain that the decreased input of calories proposed by this diet would cause people to lose more weight than any increased energy expenditure by the dietary supplement. (2) Gregg078 is completely correct in saying that eating healthy and exercising are the only healthy ways to lose weight. Diets can certainly help people lose weight, BUT that would be because almost all of them are starvation diets, this one included. (3) Fun fact. People who consume 500 calories or less consistantly can be considered anorexic.

I agree, I want to know what "HCG" is. I am so sick of seeing ads for losing weight. If you want to lose weight just get up and GO!!...rather than looking for the easy, lazy way out. Teach yourself good habits, rather than resorting to a pill to help you out. Limiting your calorie intake will in fact help you lose weight but that is the only step you are able to take that sounds reasonable from that article, yet that alone won't do much. Limiting your calorie intake is okay but not as drastic as only consuming 500 calories a day. That will drain you and make you everything BUT energetic. I feel like no one can actually trust and rely on other ways of losing weight other than the good, old-fashioned way. Stick to the gym!!!

What articles did you read? Links to the articles would help your reader to compare and evaluate the claims.

This arcticle is an excellent example of the scientific principle "extraodinary claims require extraordinary evidence." it is also a great example of Pseudoscience it claims that it helps you lose weight but there are not any scientific explanantions behind it to prove that it actually will help. What are some other reasons that this could represent Pseudoscience?

This was a very good idea for a blog topic seeing as how everyone from all over is looking for a good way to get in shape. I feel like the government should have more strict regulations on advertisements like these because many of them are so ineffective. In addition, it doesn't seem to be very healthy to only have an intake of about 500 calories a day without some type of additional source, such as vitamins or something prescribed by a doctor. I also wonder how many people advertisements like these are able to sucker in every year? I didn't know that fact about people eating under 500 calories being considered anorexic. Thanks for the additional information marin129.

Consuming only 500 calories a day would make you lose weight however for a person of average weight this would not be enough calories. The body instead would cannibalize muscle and fat in order to have a sufficient caloric intake. While exercise is not necessarily needed to lose weight, it's amusing seeing diets that offer a quick fix to a difficult problem such as weight loss.

This is a very interesting topic and think that diets like the ones in the article are unhealthy and make our bodies more unstable then in the first place. This diet not being FDA approved, only consuming 500 calories a day, and injecting HCG into your own body sounds like no fun and not healthy. I think the best way to lose weight the healthy way is to watch what you eat and work out every day. Whether this be swimming, biking, or running getting your body working and heart rate pumping will allow you to burn the fat and calories you want in a much healthier way.
