Overdosing on Water?

You can never have enough water! With this mentality it is common knowledge that the average human should drink at least eight cups of water per day. However an article taken from the Scientific American seems to suggest that we have we been led to believe a lie due to the many deaths caused by excessive water intake.

water-bottles-2.jpgIn 2007 a radio contest was being held in California, the competition was to see who could drink the most water without urinating. A woman died later that day from consuming over two gallons of water, this is not the only case where excess of water has been the cause of death. Because your kidneys control the amount of water, salts and solutes leaving your body when pressured with this huge amount of water within a short time period the kidneys get overworked and cannot flush the water out fast enough resulting in the blood becoming waterlogged.
So now that the truth about water has been exposed how do we know how much water to drink? According to several resources (Mayo Clinic, Dr. Ben Kim) there are many different ways to figure that out, but the most reliable method is you need to drink to your own thirst.

When I heard about this radio competition a couple years ago I was very surprised because I aways thought it was great to drink a lot of water. I never really knew why the lady had died from drinking too much until this blog and it totally makes sense to me now. Her kidneys got over worked! I now know only drink enough water for my own thirst and never any more! I don't want to die from too much water! Very informative blog and articles that you linked!

I see you're point about overdosing on water. The fact that a radio show would endorse that kind of behavior, is shocking and slightly disturbing. If you gotta go, you gotta go, for your kidney's sake. However, as bad as overdosing on water can be, there are many more things that would be more damaging if you drank excessive amounts. Alcohol, soda, and coffee all can be more detrimental to your health than just being kidney killers. So if you do have to drink more of something, drink more water!

I have heard of the problems with overdosing on water. However, I think that on an average day, we don't have enough time to sit down an drink incredible amounts of water that cause health problems. Personally, I have a hard time consuming enough water because I am very busy with school. For this reason, I think we should be aware that overdosing on water is a problem, but most likely we will never encounter this issue if we live a healthy lifestyle.

LOL, McKenzie. I don't think this blog is entirely accurate. It is good to drink a lot of water, and not just the bare minimum you need to survive. Our bodies are roughly 70% water, so drinking plenty of water allows our body to replenish itself by getting rid of the old water, and replacing it with new water. However, this blog is correct in that ungodly amounts of water consumed over a short period of time can be harmful or even fatal. Over-hydration is most common in athletes who constantly drink water prior to training. It recommended you drink at least 64 ounces a day. That is the minimum. Drinking 2 or even 3 times that amount will do no harm as long as it is spread out. The woman who died drank almost 3 gallons in a very short period of time, essentially drowning her organs. A lot of water is good for you.

Nice post. I think this myth is difficult because so many people have heard it and believe it, but if you actually try to follow it, you end up having to go to the bathroom every hour! Too much of anything can certainly be bad.

Haha, as my chemistry teacher said, H2O is the most lethal chemical out there. People die from drowning. Jokes aside, I do think you can overdose water by making your kidney working extra hard.

I found your blog very interesting because I try everyday to get the necessary and healthy intake of water. I usually fill a large water bottle up about 3 times. But this is just drinking to my natural thirst sensation and not an extreme amount as demonstrated by the lady in the radio contest. This also fascinated me because I was recently having a discussion with my younger brother about the statement "you can never drink too much water" because he wanted to combat that statement and say, "actually, you can die from drinking too much water." But of course, he had little evidence to back up his combative statement. But low-and-behold, he may have had a point -- too much water overworks the kidneys and can kill you.
