Most people would agree that beauty is a fairly subjective thing. Everyone has different ideas about what is beautiful and find different things attractive. There are also differences between cultures on what is generally considered beautiful. This article discusses some of the more radical differences in beauty ideals around the world. A few examples include the elongation of women's necks with brass rings in the Kayan tribe or the preference for chin and lip tattoos in Polynesia. These may seem strange and even ugly to a Westerner but many of the things we consider normal and attractive would be unusual to them. We get plastic surgery to change how our body looks and wear braces for years to have straight teeth. Neither is right or better, it's like they say "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
There are some things that appear to be considered beautiful around the world though. They seem to mainly apply to women and this makes sense because as we learned men care more about beauty than women do. Another article talks about things like youth, clear skin, and symmetry that men find attractive across all cultures. This suggests that there are some universal beauty standards.

Interesting post, I love this topic! Another example of a drastic beauty measure would be foot binding from China in the 1800s. It's so crazy that women go through/have gone through such painful processes in order to fit a beauty standard. I can never imagine having plastic surgery to enhance myself in any way. To me, it just doesn't seem worth it.
I found this post intriguing enough that I just searched what these Polynesian lip/chin tattoos look like. I must admit, I thought that it was quite peculiar, but saying that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" really hit the nail on the head.
Really great topic! Beauty is such wonderful world because it describes all kinds of features. Another culturally different sign of beauty is ear gages! These interesting earrings were once an African tribal tradition, and are now becoming prevalent in some modern day americans. It is definitely crazy to look at all the different beauty procedures that people around the world will go through.
It's so interesting to think that different cultures can have such different views on beauty. When I think of beauty, I just assume it's universal.
It is interesting to see how standards of beauty can be radically different across different cultures. Is there a culture which consider being massive (fat) is "beautiful"? Or is it universal standard that everybody consider "beautiful"?
I have always heard of foot binding in China to be considered beautiful in their culture, but I never understood it. It's quite amazing how such drastic beauty alterations can be taken as something extraordinarily beautiful across cultures. I would love to find out what features are considered beautiful across all cultures.
it is true that the cultures reflect a lot on the beauty standards. however, some of universal beauty standards have been definitely established due to globalization.
It is really interesting topic! Around the world, men are more likely concern about women's appearance than girls do. However, as the beuaty standards vary around the world, it would be more important to focus on mind's beauty rather than on beauty of appearances.
I really liked how you discussed the things that different cultures had in common with each other (when it comes to beauty), and the great differences they have as well. Not only is "beauty in the eye of the beholder", but it seems like "beauty is pain" as well! Lots of these procedures practiced in different cultures and places around the world seem very drastic and painful. Of course, people probably say the same thing about the methods Americans use to enhance their beauty, such as plastic surgery. I thought this article was very informational and interesting to read.
Nice contrast of differences and universal traits in beauty.
I think it is very interesting that there are specific things that are beautiful across the board between cultures. I really like this article because it does show the difference in how beauty is viewed globally. Beauty is a huge aspect talked about throughout all cultures especially in our society with super models and actresses on t.v. Good job on the blog!
