I Just Can't Get Enough...sleep

There are few things in this world that I love more than sleep. A concept from this class that I will remember is what I learned about the biology of sleep. A major problem I have is getting a sufficient amount of rest (as I'm sure a good percentage of my classmates know all about). Although psychologists have different ideas regarding why we sleep at all, they do agree that it is necessary for survival. The demands of school or work may require one to skimp on sleep, but doing so can have drastic effects on many different aspects. Lack of sleep can result in decreased effectiveness of memory consolidation, hindering learning. It can take a toll on your mood and stress level while also throwing your weight and immune system off balance. The average healthy adult needs between 7.5 and 9 hours of rest each night. For some it just isn't going to happen but one useful fact to remember from this course is to work with your REM cycle. Very interesting blog. I agree with this, and I will always remember the importance of sleep. Sleep is very mysterious and important for our physical and mental health. It is our time to "recharge" and it is very refreshing. Because of these things that I have learned about the importance of sleep, I am definitely investing in a very comfortable bed. We spend about one third of our lives in it, so dropping 2K for a tempur-pedic mattress doesn't sound all that pricey.

This is a great blog post! I learned about the 90 minute sleep cycle trick in my high school psych class. There are some websites that let you enter when you need to wake up and it tells you when you need to go to bed. This can very depending on how long it takes for you to fall asleep. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who just never seems to feel rested in the morning.

The picture of those kittens sleeping just makes me want to sleep all day! I was unaware that the average adult needs 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep a night, but as you said, in a daily grind of school, work, and social life, it's hard to find time during the day to get so many hours of sleep. But again, like you mentioned, sleep is a necessity worth making time for in a daily schedule. More sleep means more productivity!

I'm in the same boat! I work and attend school - and there is never enough time to do it all. I have always been a sleeper, and really don't recall ever feeling well rested. I feel sleepy every day. From the time I get up I need coffee to help me feel awake. I've had people make comments about my yawning, yet I wouldn't even realize I was yawning. I guess it became second nature. I may have to pay more attention to the 90 min REM cycles and see if it makes a difference. Some people take sleepiness as it as a sign of laziness or poor time management. I think it's one of those things that is misunderstood unless it's happening to you.

We often times do take sleep for granted. When school and work gets crazy, sleep gets pushed to the back of the line. This fact is ironic because when we are busy all day we need sleep even more than usual. If a person can't make time for a couple crucial REM cycles during sleep they will be underperforming at their job and on their schoolwork. So everyone get some much deserved sleep before finals week to make sure we're all fully functional and awake!

Sleep was also one of the most interesting things that I will remember from this course. In discussion I realized just how much sleep I am deprived of. Since then I have really started to change my sleeping habits. Believe it or not, I feel more awake from just going to sleep only an hour earlier!

It is amazing to me how much your previous night of sleep can have an effect on your day. Getting enough sleep and starting off on the right foot not only puts you in a better mood but also makes you more productive. I find that when I am tired all my mind can think about is sleep hindering my learning. I liked your blog post and I hope to create better sleeping patterns for the future.

Throughout first semester, I would sleep less than 6 hours every night and I could feel how this affected myself during the day. I have been successful in changing my study habits in order to get more sleep each night, because it is definitely an important thing. As I learned in Psychology this semester also, adults are supposed to get more than 7.5 hours of sleep each night which makes me realize that I need to go to sleep earlier than expected! It really does make a difference. Good job on this blog post.

I appreciate this blog because I often find myself feeling very drowsy and out of it when I wake up. I have also found that if I get next to no sleep on a weekend night it will affect me for the entire week. I normally have to get about 9 hours of sleep or I feel completely dead. I normally don't get this much sleep and it affects me a lot.

Thank you for the interesting blog. I read your link and found my problem. I'm taking 22credits for this semester, so I have tons of assignment every day. I usually take a nap to release my stress and hard to go to bed at regular time. It causes skipping the morning class. I realized from the article that I should exercise and manage the daytime nap to sleep well. Thanks again for the good blog!

I completely agree with your blog! Sleep is one of the most important activities in my daily routines. After taking this class I have seen the overwhelmingly importance sleep has on our daily lives. We learned not only what impacts sleep has on our daily lives but also the different phases of sleep and waves our body gives off during sleep. I think the majority of college students underestimate the importance of sleep. I have learned my lesson by before big tests getting sleep rather than pulling all nighters. I have found that sleep is more important than knowing the actual information of the test. If your body is not awake and able to think normally you will do very poorly on the test. Overall, interesting article and I will always remember the things we learned about sleep!

This blog is really interesting and I really like this one. As a college student, I often stay up all night and couldn't have enough sleep. Consequently, my body becomes fatigued and brain doesn't work perfectly.
And as I often find myself groggy in the morning, I would try sleeping at a 90 minutes multiple!

This is a great post, and I definitely thought the link was helpful. I know that its difficult for me to get enough sleep, and think that its due to both social and work demands. Even when I don't have a lot of work to get done, I usually go to sleep at about the same time because I find myself talking late into the night with friends.
