The Fastest Way of Losing Weight?

Nowadays, many people consider the slender body as one type of beauty. In consequence, number of people who exercise, eat healthy and less calorie food increases. Often, this trend to have a thin figure brings a side effect of disease called bulimia, or bulimia nervosa. Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by episodes of excessive eating followed by inappropriate methods of weight control, such as self-induced vomiting. Binge eating is accompanied by a feeling of loss of control over eating. People with bulimia often lose their control over eating, and get rid of their stress by excessively over eating. Shortly after, they feel guilt and worry about being fat and they induce vomiting in order to empty their stomach. Sometimes, vomiting releases a powerful rush of endorphins and this keeps people doing vomit after overeating

In a short run, people lose their weight as they empty their stomach. However, in a long run, repeated overeating and vomiting causes a severe physical damage. Continuous regurgitation of gastric juice damages mouth and teeth, and low blood pressure takes place due to malnourishment. The worst case, but most frequent effect of bulimia would be a suicide attempt.

In order to avoid this severe disease, people should not attempt to get rid of their stress by overeating. In addition, it is important to not feel guilty about overeating, and try to control body weight with an appropriate amount of food and steady exercise.

It is sad to heat that a common effect of bulimia is suicide. I think that as college students, we are often times more prone to eating disorders like bulimia because we experience large amounts of stress. Like you mentioned at the end of your article, it is important to respond to stress in healthy ways and maintain a healthy diet and steady exercise.

I agree Bulimia is a terrible disease. It can change a persons life forever, and is a serious problem among teenage girls in our society. What do you think are some alternatives to reduce stress instead of eating and throwing up again? What can we teach in schools to decrease bulimia?

A huge contribution to the causes of bulimia and other eating disorders such as anorexia are social media and peer pressure. Our popular culture are trained us to think that unrealistic skinniness is an ideal trait that should be striven for. In public, while overweight is the norm, thin is cool and idolized. It is these mental sets, more so than stress although it is a contributer.

I hope many people get the chance to read this article because it's extremely important to recognize if and when one may have an eating disorder. Eating disorders are far more common in the average person than people think, and such disorders need to be addressed and handled properly. As a person who has lost a significant amount of weight in his life, I've experienced the right and wrong ways of losing weight, and starving and bulimia are not the proper ways. Lose weight the right way or don't lose it at all!

This is a great blog post that everyone should read! Mostly everyone knows what Bulimia is, but the reality is that when one of our closest friends is going through a tough time, we seldom know it. I think that especially for me, this blog post was an eye opener to keep in touch with my close friends and always let them know that I am there for them. Hopefully I can use this as a stepping stone to have the courage to talk to my friend about her problem.

Do you think it is as simple as not worrying about weight to stop an eating disorder? What is positive reinforcement training (describe a little bit)?

I think we all think about our bodies unconsciously all the time since we are surrounded by the visuals such as thin models and actresses. I think it is almost impossible to not to worry about weight as all people do not want to be judged by society. there are always stereotypes of all kinds of people so I think people are scared to let themselves to do what they want.

Eating disorders are a large problem for teenagers and young adults; however, it isn't just a "girls disease." Men are affected by body images also. I wonder what the statistics for European eating disorders looks like. Knowing that their advertisements, shows, and movies aren't as strongly censored as ours are, I wonder if they are more comfortable with their bodies. It would be interesting to compare the two: American statistics v. European statistics.

Body image is a complicated issue to explore, especially with all the different body types people are exposed to everyday through television and advertisements. The idea society has about what a beautiful body is has changed drastically over the last few decades. I recently read an article comparing paintings of women from the 16th century and modern women and the differences were striking.

I don't think it is as simple as not worrying about weight in order to avoid an eating disorder.

One positive reinforcement training for the people with an eating disorder would be giving them their favorite food as they take exercise for specific amount time.
If they walk for half hour, give them small amount of their favorite food, and gradually increase the exercising time.

Reading about the psychology behind eating disorders is very interesting, such as the rush of endorphins they receive following throwing up. It's awful that our society has pushed so much for the perfect body type. With the advertisements of the "perfect woman" assaulting our senses everyday, it's definitely hard to avoid. Eating disorders are such a serious issue and helping understand the mental processes behind it will hopefully help reduce the rates of bulimia and anorexia.

Nowadays, I believe, it is impossible to stop thinking about own weight especially when we are surrounded by advertisements of thin, beautiful people. So, instead of worrying about own weight, we need to be proactive: we need to find the right balance between exercising and earing. We need to think about our food: what we eat and how much we eat. Everything needs to be in moderation.

This is very interesting. It is important for people to be happy with their body without having to have an eating disorder such as bulimia to do so. In the world today it is almost impossible to be conscientious about your body with all of the movies and celebrities we see on t.v. every day. Overall do you think there will ever be a cure for these disorders in the near future?

Interesting article, I'm not really sure where I stand exactly on the issue presented, I agree that media influences people on the way they think about their appearance, however, even runway models aren't as skinny as someone with an eating disorder. I think that somehow, a person with an eating disorder creates some sort of altered vision when looking at themselves.
