2013 Walk in the Garden Classes

June 12: Dirt Therapy - A Great Reason for Gardening
Pulling out those nasty weeds, digging in the soil, admiring your work, and soaking in the sunshine are all part of "dirt therapy." Learn how your garden can restore your spirits, calm your day, and help put your life back into perspective.

June 26: Tantalizing Texture in the Garden
Texture is one of the design elements that can capture the senses through touch and sight. By placing a combination of plants with different heights, texture, and color creates character and curiosity in your garden. In this class, we will explore the possibilities of how to incorporate different textures in the garden through pattern, repetition, dimension, and color.

July 10: Using Native Plants in the Home Landscape
Native plants are fascinating because of how they have adapted to thrive with the local climate, soil types, and animals. Many animal and insect species depend on native plants for their survival. Adding native plants back into our landscapes helps our ecology in many ways. This informal class will discuss plant selection and many benefits of using native flowers, shrubs, and trees in your home's landscape.

July 24: Creative Color Combinations
Creative color combinations in the garden can soothe, uplift, and energize your mood for good health and well-being. Learn the difference between creating a gorgeous color-filled garden that fills your senses instead of merely growing plants because they're pretty.

August 7: Fragrant Annuals and Perennials

Did you know that aromatic flowers can be beneficial to your health? Some practitioners use aromatherapy to help alter the mood of their clients with success. Learn about annual and perennial flowers that can grow in your garden for their distinctive and memorable fragrance. These flowers can be used in garden beds or containers near your door or outdoor patio where you can enjoy their lovely scent.

August 21: Design Concepts in the Landscape
Do you see what you want to see in your yard? Does the look and balance of your yard match your vision? You don't have to be a landscape designer to have a beautiful yard and garden. Come and explore how the use of some basic landscape elements such as balance, form, color, scale, and simplicity can turn your vision into a reality.

Spend an evening in the beautiful Veterans Memorial and Master Gardener Demonstration Garden. Master Gardener volunteers teach informal classes in the garden during the summer months on select Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM. Classes are free to the public, but preregistration is required due to space limitations. To register, please call the Anoka County Extension Office at 763-755-1280.
