Master Gardeners of Becker County

Becker County Master Gardeners

In Becker County we now have 19 Master Gardeners. Three new Master Gardener Interns have joined us.
They have completed the core course and will be working on their volunteer and education hours to become Master Gardeners. We warmly welcome them to our group.

We are small in number, but big in energy and community involvement. In 2008 we had 15 active Master Gardeners that donated 842 hours of volunteer time in our county, educating the public about gardening and related issues. The national monitary value of volunteer time given by the Independent Sector for 2008 is $20.25 per hour. This equates to $22,659.75 donated to Becker County. We also participated in 277 hours of continuing education during 2008. The figures for 2007 were 842 hours at $ 19.51 equaling $30,669.72 with 340 additional education hours.

ANNUAL PLANT SALE

Collages.jpg
Our annual plant sale was a huge success in spite of the cool weather. We held it at our new location, the city park. This is our only fund raising project for the year

REAL GARDENS FOR REAL PEOPLE WORKSHOP

Real people 640.jpg
Lakes Homes, Lake Region Garden Club and Master Gardeners co-hosted the Gardening workshop featuring Melinda Myers a well known author & Ken Beattie, Assiniboine Park Horticulturist and author. Both speakers were outstanding.
Melindas books were on sale and she held a book signing. Tom Reiffenberger (BCMG) put the whole day together. Residents of Lakes Homes were on hand to make newspaper containers and give away a coleus to each attendee. Georgia Reiffenberger provided a delicious lunch and snacks throughout the day. Renee Zok (BCMG) and her husband built the roof top garden bird feeders and houses as door prizes. It was a wonderful gardening day enjoyed by all.

JUNE- NOW IS THE TIME TO......

County Line Article
- Don’t worry if you’ve gotten a late start on your garden this year. Garden
centers are still full of healthy, well-developed perennials and annuals - even
vegetables - ready to transplant. With warmer air and soil temperatures, they
should take right off and continue to grow well the rest of the season.
- Water early in the morning, this allows plant foliage to dry out before cool
evenings which may inhibit mildew.
- Do daily and weekly checks for insect and disease problems to control early.
- Raise cutting height of lawn mower to 3 inches. Mowing too short allows sun to damage grass crowns and dries roots more rapidly.
- Check outdoor containers and hanging baskets regularly to make sure the soil is moist. You’ll have to water daily or even more often in hot, dry weather. Frequent watering leaches fertilizer and nutrients through the soil, so plan to fertilize with water-soluble plant food every two weeks.
- Hoe, Hoe, Hoe!
