In Becker County we now have 19 Master Gardeners. Three new Master Gardener Interns have joined us.
They have completed the core course and will be working on their volunteer and education hours to become Master Gardeners. We warmly welcome them to our group.

We are small in number, but big in energy and community involvement. In 2008 we had 15 active Master Gardeners that donated 842 hours of volunteer time in our county, educating the public about gardening and related issues. The national monitary value of volunteer time given by the Independent Sector for 2008 is $20.25 per hour. This equates to $22,659.75 donated to Becker County. We also participated in 277 hours of continuing education during 2008. The figures for 2007 were 842 hours at $ 19.51 equaling $30,669.72 with 340 additional education hours.

The Becker County Master Gardeners have had a busy 2008. We are a small but energetic group. We have assisted many of you throughout the year by answering your gardening questions, whether you catch us officially at the weekly Plant and Pest Clinics we offer throughout the growing season, or whether you catch us at church, the grocery store or over the back fence. We have participated in many community events and projects such as teaching community education classes, making presentations at garden club meetings, holding hands-on horticulture events, writing gardening columns for the local newspaper, and sponsoring a gardening display at the Becker County Fair.

Our state Master Gardener program encourages us to participate in activities that highlight the following topics: Gardening as it relates to envirnomental issues such as pollution and water runoff, invasive species, diseases and insects; Building community capacity by working with diverse groups of people, providing access to gardening for people of all ages and abilities, and working with other organizations; and Increasing awareness of Extension programs and university research-based information. If you have a project or event in mind and you would like to have Master Gardener involvement, feel free to contact us.
MASTER GARDENERS PLAYED
MAJOR ROLE IN U. S. Highway 10
NATURALIZATION EFFORT
by Sally Hausken

From the moment of inception of the renovation of U. S. Highway 10 through the City of Detroit Lakes, both Pelican River Watershed and Master Gardeners knew the 4,000 feet of shoreline of Big Detroit Lake was a perfect venue for showcasing an environmental shift to native plantings in the resort city. The Watershed, City of Detroit Lakes and a representative of Master Gardeners, with others, worked on plans more than 2 years in advance.
Each of at least 8 organizations played significant and specific assigned roles
during the 2-3 week time period of arrival of the over 12,000 plants to their installation. Participants included Pelican River Watershed District, MnDOT, City of Detroit Lakes, Prairie Restorations, Luxury Landscaping, and DNR.
Because the thread of lakeshore was skinny at best and also for security reasons, plants were stored at an undisclosed location. Master Gardeners' mission: keeping plants arrive from delivery until installation, aka watering. Special piping and spigots were set up to accommodate the crucial task.
As publicity emerged at the dedication, Master Gardeners' in-kind contribution received repeated appreciation as a proactive organization in the community.
Participating Master Gardeners were Sally Hausken, Leslie Holen, Heather Ettlinger, DMae Ceryes, and Alice Wenzel.

Lakes Homes, Lake Region Garden Club and Master Gardeners co-hosted the Gardening workshop featuring Melinda Myers a well known author & Ken Beattie, Assiniboine Park Horticulturist and author. Both speakers were outstanding.
Melindas books were on sale and she held a book signing. Tom Reiffenberger (BCMG) put the whole day together. Residents of Lakes Homes were on hand to make newspaper containers and give away a coleus to each attendee. Georgia Reiffenberger provided a delicious lunch and snacks throughout the day. Renee Zok (BCMG) and her husband built the roof top garden bird feeders and houses as door prizes. It was a wonderful gardening day enjoyed by all.

August - Now is the time to...
-	Add more flowering perennials to your garden. Late August through early
September is an ideal time to plant them, whether new from the garden
center or divisions from your own plants. Make sure there are two or three
weeks of decent growing conditions expected after planting them. Mulch
around them, then after the tops die, rake leaves or straw on top, too.
-	Sanitation is the most effect means of controlling insects and disease problems in the garden. Dispose of any infected plant material in the trash, do not compost.
-	Don't fertilize or use weed killers on heat stressed lawns, wait until temperatures are more moderate.
-	Remove overly large cucumbers, zucchini and beans. Allowing them to remain on the vine will inhibit new from developing.
-	Continue to keep up with gardening chores despite uncomfortable weather and nasty mosquitoes. (Avoid gardening at dusk when they're most prevalent.) Keep weeding so more weed seeds don't fall, only so sprout next year. Remove any over-ripe or rotting produce, as it attracts wasps.

Cheryl A. Peterson, 64 of Detroit Lakes, died Monday March 9, 2009 at Merit Care Hospital in Fargo ND.
Cheryl was a Master Gardener in Becker County for 12 years. She was a great diagnostician. Cheryl answered questions through the national extension system (Ask a Master Gardener) for Minnesota. She spent hours researching questions that came her way with diligence and took great pride in her research to make sure she was giving accurate information. She found satisfaction in helping anyone who had a question. She was willing to help the newer Master Gardeners learn and helped at our Plant and Pest Clinics. She also would print out information when she thought it would be helpful, especially for the novice as she wanted them to find the thrill of knowing as much as you can about gardening. Her passing is a huge loss to our group.
We will miss Cheryl .

By David C. Zlesak, University of Minnesota Extension Educator
All-America Selections (AAS) serves as the oldest (first award winning varieties were designated in 1933), most established, impartial international testing organization in North America. Breeders from around the world enter their best flower and vegetable seed varieties with the hope that their entries would prove themselves to be superior performers across the 46 trial gardens in the United States and Canada and earn this prestigious award. Performance of test varieties are compared with the best commercially available varieties of their class. In addition to the trial gardens, there are display gardens which feature recent and next year’s AAS winners. All together there are 176 AAS display gardens. The five AAS display gardens located in Minnesota are listed at the end of this article. Seeds and transplants of new AAS winners are widely available from leading garden centers and seed catalogs.

The four AAS winners for 2009 are:

Viola ‘Rain Blue and Purple’ All-America SelectionsViola ‘Rain Blue and Purple’ comes in shades of purple, blue, and white. The 1.5? blooms typically open purple and white and darken as they age to a mixture of purple and blue providing a mixed tapestry of monochromatic color. While typical violas will stop flowering in the heat of summer, this one possesses above average heat tolerance and will continue to grow and bloom more reliably. Plants typically grow to 6? in height and spread 10-14? in width. It makes a great low border plant or container plant where it can spill over the edge of containers.

Melon ‘Lambkin’ All-America SelectionsMelon ‘Lambkin’ has fantastic flavor! The white flesh is juicy, sweet, and very aromatic and the rinds are thin. Compared to other gourmet melons of the “Christmas type?, this one ripens relatively early at 65-70 days. Plants are vigorous and productive. Melons are oval shaped, two to four pounds, and once mature have a yellow rind color with green mottling. They have great storage compared to other melons when kept cool in a root cellar or refrigerator as well.

Acorn squash ‘Honey Bear’ All-America SelectionsAcorn squash ‘Honey Bear’ has a deliciously sweet, honey-like flavor when cooked. Compact plants are high yielding due in part to their great tolerance to powdery mildew, a disease that can stress other acorn squash varieties and result in minimized yield and delayed maturity. Fruits are about a pound in size, a perfect size for and individual serving or sharing between two people. The rind is a very attractive dark green and the flesh is a rich deep golden color. Fruit matures in approximately 100 days.

Eggplant ‘Gretel’ All-America SelectionsEggplant ‘Gretel’ is an exceptional early fruiting, white skinned variety. Days from transplant to first ripe fruit is 55 days under good growing conditions. Fruit are borne in small clusters and the flavor is noticeably sweet and the skin is tender. These exceptional fruit quality characteristics allows fruit to be harvested beyond the optimum size of 3-4? in length and still retain good eating quality. Plants are relatively compact, reaching a height and width of about 3’. This is a great eggplant for those that only have a small area able to devote to vegetable gardening or for container growing.
