Most vegetables need a loose soil consisting of organic matter to grow healthy. To determine how your soil is, a soil test is recommended. A soil sample can be submitted to the University of Minnesota. Please

Vegetables like any other plants need the right balance of nutrients to grow healthy and be productive. The three essential nutrients are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The plants would normally get these from the organic matter in the soil. Each of these substances perform a specific function. Nitrogen is needed for healthy leaves. Phosphorus supports flower and fruit production, and potassium helps plants develop a strong root system. Along with the above three, plants also need some micronutients such as calcium, manganese, etc. These typically do not need to be added since they are available in trace amounts in most soils.
