Saturday, November 29, 2008

Gray sky, hardly any wind. Hundreds of mallards towards the southern shore, a scattering of coots. Fishermen in several boats and on western shore. Ice skimming the surface of the southwest bay, and more remarkably reaching from the northern shore to the center of the lake. A large, honking flight of geese moves at dusk from the sanctuary pond to the water east of the ice.

Friday, November 28, 2008

Sunny, hardly any clouds; light breeze from west. A dozen northern shovelers in small groups along south shore, overlapping with scores of mallards and a dozen coots. Fresh ice forming in southwest bay and along western shore. Pileated woodpecker flitting among trees along western path and feasting on berries, red head brilliant in the sun. A couple of crows in the trees; one tern or gull in the air. Clots of bright green algae floating near the border of the ice and bound into it. IMG_1965 2.jpg Fishermen on shore and trolling in a half dozen boats. Crushed ice along the eastern shore beginning to refreeze. Many walkers and joggers.

Thanksgiving, November 27, 2008

A pretty afternoon, almost cloudless--just a few vanishing puffs. Moderate breeze from WSW veering W, with some cresting waves, churning ice fragments along the eastern shore. No birds to be seen there, but many pods of pre- and postprandial pedestrians.

Monday, November 24, 2008

Lumpy gray stratocumulus, just tinted with blue and pink, darkening entirely over the hour. Moderate breeze from northwest, driving waves that churn the ice rubble along the southeast shore. Solitary fisherman standing in aluminum boat some distance out. Scores if not hundreds of mallards near southwest shore, some standing on new ice there; also some coots in the water. A few gulls or terns aloft near the band shell. Four fishermen on shore. Paths fairly busy, considering the weather, with walkers and runners.

Sunday, November 23, 2008

Gray overall except for some slight pink to the south. Light breeze from the north. Ice shelf along southern shore in retreat. Mallards abundant there and toward the center of the lake. Two kayakers in colorful outfits land their colorful kayaks on the south beach. Pods of coots to the west, and more than half a dozen northern shovelers. Some mallards paddling together near the band shell include one of the domestic mallards. Better footing on the path (no longer iced) draws a good number of people.

November 22, 2008

Saturday, November 22, 2008

Light breeze from the southeast. Overcast; leaden sky and water. Light snow from last night highlights the thin ice shelf along southeast and south, in places out to fifty feet. Many mallards and a half dozen coots show to southwest; the flocks riding in the middle of the lake, just visible with binoculars, are too far out to identify. The three floating docks must be anchored in place: they rotate but don't drift away. A fisherman in a metal boat near the north shore, wearing a headlamp, is conspicuous in the dark.

Many clusters of puffed-up mallards on the shore and paddling near the ice. Three shoveler ducks feeding together, a male and two females; another male among the mallards. Only a few coots. Some more mallards near the band shell, including the two domestic mallards.

Cloudless at first, though high cirrus gathers to southwest. Peach-colored sunlight; no wind, the lake a mirror. Mallards about. Young loon diving, near the south shore, making circular ripples. Thin wash of bright green algae against the shoreline. Ice skimming protected shallows. Coots. Two warblers still in the trees on the west shore. A half dozen fishermen on the shore near the band shell. The two domestic mallards near the north shore; a pair of geese; another half-dozen geese. Another young loon, much like the first, but opposite, too far to be the same.
