Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Cool, cloudy; a few people standing around on the southeast beach, the north beach empty; not many people on the paths. Mallard with little ducklings near southern shore; other mallards here and there; gulls. Two geese with five very large goslings trimming the grass next to the water on the western shore, in their usual spot; several other geese paddling nearby. The weeds have covered even more of the lake along the southwest shore; duckweed is now flourishing too, close to the shore. White and violet asters blooming abundantly; a few hawk weeds flowering near the band shell; many milkweeds beginning to blossom along the north shore. Butterfly weed blossoming in the drainage area between the road and the path. One small sprig of purple loosestrife next to the path on the lake side. Mud and some large puddles in the creek.

Saturday, June 20, 2009

Scrim of cirrostratus rising from the south; otherwise blue and sunny. Both beaches busy; the paths less so. Few cars, very few planes (taking off to the north). Mallards in the southwest inlet pool, including a half dozen small ducklings; blackbird calling from the brush. Dozens of pan fish idling in the shallows along the western shore. L.H. Yacht Club sailboats on lazy maneuvers; a couple of canoes in the mix. Wedding party being photographed on the northern dock; remnants of another leaving the rose garden, now in full bloom. Large chestnut tree on the north also in blossom, more white than green.

Friday, June 19, 2007

Mix of cumulostratus, cumulus, blue sky, sunlight, with dark ridge building to the west. Light breeze from the west. Scattered canoes, kayaks; fishermen in boats; one or two sailboats. Beaches and paths active but not crowded. Little islands around inlet pool at southwest a haven for two mallards with their broods of ducklings. Purple irises. Great blue heron there, croaking, stalking, successfully fishing -- one catch a sunfish six inches across. Two geese and three large goslings on the grass at the west. Milkweed beginning to bud. A few swallows and gulls. Blue weed harvester idle at anchor off the north shore. Wood duck with ducklings coasting the weeds along the western shore. Some puddles in the creek bed, occupied by a couple of mallards; the greenery less stressed than before.

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Mixed sky: cirrus, cirrostratus, stratus, cumulus, patches of blue; thin sun. Slight breeze from the south. Both beaches busy, like the paths. Kayaker, fisherman in a boat, a canoe, one flagging sailboat. Cottonwood seeds continue to drift down. Mallards near the southwest inlet; red-winged blackbird; great blue heron standing near a sand bar, his back to the shore. Shelves of millefoil and algae getting broader and thicker along large stretches of the shoreline. Two geese and several goslings coast along one edge of the weeds at the east. A large, blue, triangular open box hangs like an piñata from a small green ash along the path—a trap for emerald ash borers.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Thickening stratus and cumulus edge out the blue sky. Recent rains have brightened the green landscape, but have hardly raised the surface of the lake -- which today is now a mirror littered with cottonwood seeds (countless others hang in the air). A very loud and very bright Baltimore oriole announces its presence in the bushes along the southwestern shore. Mallards, swallows, on and over the water; a few large caterpillars on the paths. Fishermen standing in flat-bottomed boats. Both beaches are empty. Methane bubbles float up along the western shore. A wood duck leads five or six tiny ducklings through the weeds there; a large muskrat idles nearby. Farther to the south another compact row also heads north: wood duck and ducklings. A great blue heron flies slowly over the water, also northwards. The creek holds large puddles in a few places.

Friday, June 5, 2009

Sunny, some thin cirrostratus; good breeze from northwest. Few people on the beaches, more on the paths. Mallards, geese, swallows, gulls. Cottonwood cotton accumulating like snow on the grass. Shelf of chartreuse algae on millefoil reaches out up to thirty feet along the western shore, holding plastic detritus and attracting large dragonflies. Clear intervals in the shallows are thickly populated with panfish idling in the sunlight, and the occasional giant carp. One near-collision between a carp and a mallard, ruffling feathers and fins.

Idyllic early-summer afternoon. Breeze from the northwest, a few small cumulus clouds, veil of thin stratus above the southern horizon. Five large goslings grazing on the grass on the western shore, guarded by two very large geese. Two mallards with several large ducklings near the north. Swallows and gulls over the water; a few sailboats. Few people on the beaches, more on the paths, many with dogs, others biking and skating.

(Belated posting.) Cloudy; warm, good breeze from the south; heavy air; only a few drops of rain. Drought now obvious; water low, mud around the shoreline and in the creek. Mallards with a new brood of five tiny ducklings close to shore; a few older ones also.
