Light breeze from the south; sky gradually clearing from a thin line of storm clouds that passed north to south. Southern swimming beach empty, except for three life guards, the first seen this year. Not many people on the paths, although the fishing dock is well occupied. One sailboat on the water; also a canoe and two kayaks. Mallards along the southern shore and around the inlet; heron stands at attention in the middle of the inlet pool, then wades back to the small island. Hawk weed in flower here and there around the lake; also creeping bellflower. Artist at work on a small canvas of a red-and-yellow boat riding at anchor, itself covered with canvas. Milkweed redolent in bloom along the northern shore. More than a dozen people at the northern swimming beach, though no life guards. Occasional boom of a distant firework. Wood duck and duckling at rest on a branch in the water along the western shore. Geese and ducks populate the weeds. Day lilies in bloom; butterfly weed abundant. Egret flies low along the shore south to north. Creek still damp; dark green vegetation sets off many clusters of small crimson bush berries.
