Blue sky, bright, cloudless; chilly breeze from the north. The southwest bay has expanded beyond the small islands, giving mallards and a pair of geese more swimming room. Along the western shore the water reaches out thirty or forty feet at some points; elsewhere the ice runs close to the shore. Scores of white gulls rest far out on the gray ice. Blackbirds call from the marsh. Few people on the paths.
