Kentucky's Tubby Smith will be the new coach for the University of Minnesota Men's basketball team, school officials said Thursday.
The University has set a news conference for Friday at noon, according to kare11.com.
Minnesota athletics director, Joel Maturi, called Smith Thursday morning to discuss the position, according to wcco.com. Maturi flew out to Kentucky later that day to meet with Smith, according to wcco.com.
Smith led Kentucky to the 1998 national championship in his first season, but failed to make a return to the Final Four since then, according to kstp.com.
Smith will be taking over a program that finished 9-22 overall, 3-13 in the conference. The 22 losses were the most in Gopher history, according to wcco.com.
