For those of you who have not seen this announcement yet I'm posting it here. Minitex staff visited the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm, MN fall 2007. They had such a rich and unique collection in their library and archives. You can view the pictures by visiting our Flickr site. We hope that this is only a temporary closing. You can stay up-to-date by visiting the Mn Discovery Center website.

CHISHOLM - The Ironworld Development Corporation Board of Directors today announced that Minnesota Discovery Center (formerly Ironworld), a 660-acre museum, entertainment venue, research library and park in Chisholm, MN, will temporarily be closed to the public, effective Friday, November 20, 2009, at 5 p.m.

"We would like to thank our employees for their patience and understanding as we determine what the future holds for this institution," said Minnesota Discovery Center CEO, Mike Andrews.

Iron Range Resources created the nonprofit organization and negotiated a Management Agreement in 2007 for its operations. They supported the nonprofit through an endowment of $10 million and a transitional subsidy that is to be phased out over a five-year period. With the world recession, the endowment declined to $5.9 million this spring, resulting in substantially lowered funding levels.
The new name, Minnesota Discovery Center, provided a broader platform in the effort to re-invigorate the facility and give it national importance. This strategy worked. Revitalized programming within budget yielded a 15% increase in attendance figures despite cold weather, five months of highway construction, and an economy where tourism spending in northeastern Minnesota saw double digit declines.

"The financing model developed two years ago, combined with the world economic situation, just doesn't work", states CEO Mike Andrews. "Our overhead costs, not fundable by grants or sponsorships, are considerably higher than our declining subsidy and endowment interest. Although we experienced an increase in visitor attendance, it is not enough to make that up difference in a limited market."

The temporary layoffs affect 47 dedicated employees who have been passionate about the success of the facility.

"The board is currently reviewing all options for continuing operations," said Rich Puhek, IDC Board Chair. "We owe it to our dedicated staff and to the public that has been so supportive of the Minnesota Discovery Center to continue to make every effort to succeed."

The IDC Board remains optimistic about the future of the facility.

Minnesota Discovery Center opened in 1977 as the Iron Range Interpretive Center with 34 exhibits and a nominal admission charge. In 1979, the Hall of Geology was added, followed by the 1980 opening of the Research Center library and archives. In 1986, after an 18-month shutdown, the facility re-opened as with a railroad, amphitheater, new admissions building and "Festival Park."

CREW: A Weeding Manual for Modern Libraries

Weeding can be a daunting task, but this book provides a LOT of very practical guidance that will help you through the process, such as specific strategies for weeding children's or AV collections, how to dispose of weeded materials, and an epilogue encouraging the hesitant weeder. It is aimed at public libraries, but would be useful to others as well.

As noted in the SAMMIE review, the Texas Library and Archives Commission has generously made the book available online through a Creative Commons license. Go here to access it:

And if you're an OCLC member, whenever you withdraw an item, please remember to delete your holdings from OCLC. ILL staff everywhere will thank you!

The Library of Congress recently released the results of its analysis of the creation and distribution of bibliographic data in U.S. and Canadian libraries.

The Library commissioned R2 Consulting LLC to search and describe the current marketplace for cataloging records in the MARC format, with primary focus on the economics of current practices, including existing incentives and barriers to both contribution and availability.

Paired with the study online is a report of an internal working group indicating how recommendations from "On the Record: Report of the Library of Congress Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control" may be implemented at the Library. Both reports are available on the LC website here.

R2 summarizes its 10 findings concerning Library of Congress cataloging and how it supports bibliographic-description needs across the U.S. and Canada. Below are the first five findings from the R2 Study. This should make for an interesting read! Read the other findings and the full report here.

1.
Library of Congress cataloging continues to be widely valued: Libraries, vendors, and cooperatives speak with their actions. There is heavy reliance on LC's output throughout all segments of the profession and industry. This is demonstrated by 500,000 searches per day against LC's Z39.50 servers and WebOPAC; by extensive re‐sale and re‐use of records distributed by the MARC Distribution Service (MDS); and by the variety and scale of use across all library sizes and types, and all vendor sizes and types. LC records are the cornerstone of the entire market. School and public libraries are especially reliant on them, but all market segments have built services on the foundation of inexpensive and easily obtainable LC records.

2.
The Library of Congress subsidizes portions of the market: LC catalogs many titles that ultimately are not retained in its collections. As a result, LC bears significant costs from which it receives no direct benefit, for activity that is not explicitly in support of its core users. The 1902 law that governs distribution of its records deliberately excludes the cost of production from the pricing for those records. There is no revenue to offset those costs, other than the value of the free copies of the CIP books provided by publishers. The market relies to a surprising degree on LC's willingness to bear these costs and forgo this revenue. If LC were to redirect its catalogers' efforts solely to materials deemed necessary by its users, CIP production would diminish significantly. Other organizations would need to assume those costs. At present, libraries and vendors enjoy the largely unrecognized benefits of an LC subsidy.

3.
LC records are significantly underpriced: Not only does LC bear a disproportionate share of the costs associated with producing records for titles it may not retain, the law governing its sale of those records allows only the cost of distribution (plus 10%) to be recouped. The cost of production is assumed to be part of LC's ongoing operations. Such low prices contribute to the impression that cataloging should cost less than it actually does.

4.
Cataloging backlogs continue to grow in many areas and market segments: As outlined in the library survey responses, non‐Roman languages, maps, and DVDs pose particular problems. But to our surprise, many libraries are also losing ground on mainstream materials such as English‐language monographs.

5.
There is adequate cataloging capacity in North America to meet the collective need: This finding surprised us, especially given the aging of the profession and imminent retirements. However, a conservative interpretation of survey data shown on pages 9‐10 strongly suggests that there are more than enough catalogers to handle everything. In the academic market alone, for instance, the survey indicates that more than 8,000 original catalogers are employed. If each original cataloger produced on average one record per work day (or 200 per year), that would indicate capacity for 1.6 million original records annually. Unfortunately, that capacity is not well distributed, disciplined, or coordinated, despite decades of experience with cooperative cataloging.

(note: Fred Kilgour was the founder of OCLC and "Paul" was a technician there.)

Dirge for OCLC
OCLC, built by Fred
Now our terminal is dead!
Worked for months without a hitch,
Should we throw it in a ditch?
Computer systems built for us
Now they've left us in disgust!

OCLC, built by Fred
WIsh our terminal weren't dead.
Looked so nice while flashing green
Now operators want to scream.
Computer systems built for us
Now they've left us in disgust!

Circuits blew, the screen went blank
Paul asked us if we heard a clank.
No more cursor flashing green
We no longer have a screen.
OCLC, built by Fred
Oh, my Lord, it just turned red!

Does the poem take you back? Share some of your funny OCLC memories with us!

Registration is open for NISO's October webinar on Bibliographic Control Alphabet Soup: AACR to RDA and Evolution of MARC, to be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).

Librarians, ILS vendors, and commercial cataloging service providers--as well as a wide variety of related service providers--all know that the proverbial, heavily acronym-spiced "bibliographic control alphabet soup" involves the intelligent and well informed use of many ingredients. Chief in these are constantly evolving standards, combined with more than a sprinkling of creativity and insight. Three expert metadata chefs will analyze and discuss specific alphabetic ingredients already in use or soon to be implemented in the bib control kitchen.

Diane Hillmann (Director of Metadata Initiatives, Information Institute of Syracuse) will provide an overview of RDA Elements and Vocabularies: a Step Forward from MARC. RDA elements and vocabularies represent the distillation of library descriptive knowledge, optimized for use within an environment that speaks XML, RDF, and linked data, and expressed in an FRBR-aware manner.

Barbara Tillett (Chief, Policy and Standards Division, Library of Congress) will review There to Here to There -- AACR2 and RDA. Learn how what started as AACR3 evolved into an entirely new approach with a new name.

William Moen (Associate Professor, School of Library and Information Sciences, University of North Texas) will discuss results from the IMLS-sponsored research project: Data-driven Evidence for Core MARC Records. The project team examined 56 million WorldCat bibliographic records and analyzed patterns of use by catalogers of available fields/subfields.

For more information and to register, visit the event webpage. Registration is per site (access for one computer) and includes access to the online recorded archive of the webinar. NISO and NASIG members receive a discounted member rate. A student discount is also available. Can't make it on the 14th? Register and gain access to the recorded archive for one year.

Fundamentals of Acquisitions, Fundamentals of Electronic Resources and Acquisitions, and Fundamentals of Collection Development and Management are all Web-based, self-paced sessions that take place over 4-week periods. They are tailored for librarians and para-professionals in all types of libraries who are new to the topic area, and include interaction with instructors and classmates.

At a reasonable rate of $109 for ALCTS members and $129 for non-members, they look like they'd be very helpful to anyone stepping into new responsibilities in these areas. (And the Collection Development course was developed by Peggy Johnson, of the University of Minnesota Libraries!)

We've kept you informed about our changing relationship with OCLC, so you know that, as of July 1, you'll contact OCLC with support questions related to OCLC products and services.

As part of these same changes, Minitex will continue offering OCLC-related training, but now you'll also have access to training provided by other organizations around the country. Note that Minitex will be implementing differential pricing; fees for registrants from the Minitex region will be lower than those for registrants from outside our region. We don't have many training sessions scheduled yet, but look for more as we move into Fall.

Here is the official announcement about OCLC training:

Minitex and OCLC continue to work together on behalf of OCLC member libraries.

We are pleased to announce that OCLC and Minitex will work together to provide you with expanded access to quality OCLC training and related educational offerings.

Minitex has been certified to provide OCLC training--adhering to specific standards and use of OCLC-developed curriculum to ensure consistency of training objectives across all OCLC product and service areas.

As an OCLC-certified training provider, Minitex makes its OCLC-related course offerings available on the OCLC Training Portal, a Web-based, customer-centered resource that allows you to locate and register for courses that meet your personal learning objectives.

The Training Portal displays OCLC-certified courses from all Training Partners across the U.S. All of the courses listed on the Training Portal are available to anyone interested in learning more about using OCLC products and services.

Social networking features available on the Training Portal allow you to join groups, add friends, bookmark courses and much more.

The OCLC Training Portal will be accessible starting July 1, 2009, by visiting the OCLC Training Portal Web site.

For questions regarding the OCLC Training Portal, call 1-800-848-5800, or email training@oclc.org.

Please take note that the role Minitex has played in supporting your library's use of OCLC products and services will shift somewhat in the coming fiscal year. As OCLC and Minitex continue to work in partnership on behalf of OCLC member libraries, we would like to inform you about some important changes with regard to how your library will access support for OCLC products and services.

Beginning July 1, 2009, OCLC members will contact OCLC Customer Support for all questions related to support for OCLC products and services. OCLC's teams of support professionals are available 14 hours a day, Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. Central Time, to assist you with your needs. These dedicated individuals will provide answers and information to help your library maximize the value of your membership and use of OCLC products and services.

In addition to product support specialists, the OCLC Customer Support organization is also comprised of a specialized team of librarians focused on providing consultative and workflow support tied to the use and satisfaction of OCLC products and services.

OCLC Billing & Ordering: Minitex will continue to offer billing and ordering assistance to your library for OCLC products and services.

Technical Services: Minitex Bibliographic & Technical Services (BATS) will continue to provide non-OCLC-related services and support that your library receives from Minitex today. For example, BATS will continue to provide support for general technical services issues such as cataloging and workflow, and training in the areas of digitization and cataloging.

Reference Services: Minitex Reference Services will continue to provide support for libraries participating in AskMN: The Librarian Is In! which uses OCLC's QuestionPoint, the Minnesota NetLibrary shared collections, and Minnesota's statewide subscription to WorldCat.

Training: Minitex will continue to provide training on OCLC products and services as well as our other traditional topic areas.

Minitex will also assist OCLC in keeping member libraries informed by communicating updates, enhancements, new product offerings, research, membership reports and other important information on OCLC member benefits.

More details about this change in support will be sent out within the coming weeks.

To contact OCLC Customer Support, call 1-800-848-5800 or e-mail support@oclc.org.

It is with decidedly mixed emotions that I announce the retirements of Kay Beaudrie and Virginia Dudley from Minitex on June 5.

KAY BEAUDRIE
Kay Beaudrie’s retirement comes just one month shy of her 20th anniversary here! Her pre-Minitex career included stints in the libraries of North Park College and Rosary College in Illinois, Alverno College and Marquette University in Wisconsin, and General Mills, here in Minnesota. She joined Minitex as an OCLC Coordinator and, later, became the Manager of the Minitex/OCLC unit. Kay is renowned for her training skills and her ability to clearly explain complex systems or processes. She walked many catalogers and ILL folks through significant (and scary) changes like OCLC’s moves to PRISM and Passport for Windows with a minimum of fuss and stress. I can attest that, as a supervisor, she was supremely patient and encouraging and a textbook example of a servant-leader. In 1998, she moved over to the Minitex Contract Cataloging unit, where she has contributed significant OCLC and cataloging expertise to client libraries and continued her role as trainer and mentor to others in the unit.

VIRGINIA DUDLEY
We have been very fortunate to have Virginia Dudley as a member of the Minitex BATS unit since 2001. Prior to joining Minitex, she worked in the University of Minnesota Libraries and at Metropolitan State University. As a member of BATS, she quickly got up to speed on OCLC issues and became our expert on OCLC Authorities and all things FRBR or RDA. She stepped up to oversee the unit during my maternity leaves and has been Acting Manager of BATS since late 2007. I have greatly appreciated her dry wit, her high standards and her strong dedication to her job and her colleagues. Virginia’s plans for retirement are still hazy, but definitely include watercolor painting, volunteerism, and identifying income-generating opportunities to shore up her faltering retirement account.

Please join us in thanking Kay and Virginia for their outstanding service to Minitex and our participating libraries throughout the years and in wishing them well as they prepare for Life After Minitex. They will both be missed!

If you would like to contact them, here are their e-mail addresses:
Virginia: v-dudl@umn.edu

If you have an OCLC or BATS related issue you would normally have contacted Virginia about, please feel free to send it to our BATS e-mail (mino@umn.edu) or call Minitex and ask for someone in the BATS unit.
