New Web Technology Transforms American Chemical Society’s Online Journals

The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) (http://pubs.acs.org) has announced the launch of a dynamic new online resource for the hosting and delivery of the Society's flagship Journal of the American Chemical Society and its preeminent portfolio of peer-reviewed scholarly journals covering the major subdisciplines of chemistry as well as interface areas of scientific inquiry.

 

The new Web site delivers enhanced searching and browsing capabilities, better user navigation in aid of reader comprehension, and improved administrative features for librarians and other institutional customers.

 A Flash-based demonstration available from the ACS Publications Web site at http://pubs.acs.org/flashdemo showcases many of the features and benefits of the new site. The following are but a few of the new capabilities:

 

  • Enhanced PDF and Full-Text HTML functionality (e.g. Related Content Recommendations, Figure Browser, Forward Citation listings)
  • Enriched Tables of Contents (e.g. Figure Thumbnail Previews, Multiple Abstract and Citation Downloads, Navigation to CAS SciFinder Resources)
  • Advanced Search Interface (e.g. Simple and Advanced Search Capabilities, Tabbed Results for Research Articles and News & Features Content, Filters Column to Refine Results, Related Snippets on Displayed Content)
  • New Home Pages for All ACS Journals (e.g. Content Highlights Area, Search by Citation, Graphical Abstract Highlights, Syndicated Articles displayed from Chemical & Engineering News)
  • Abstract-Level Display for ACS Legacy Archives (e.g. Improved Navigation Options from Archive Content, First Page of Articles Displayed within New Abstract Template for Increased Functionality)

EBSCO Acquires NISC, Inc.

On October 29, 2008, EBSCO Publishing acquired NISC, Inc., National Information Services Corporation. Just a few of the NISC databases are Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Gender Studies Database, and RILM Abstracts of Music Literature.

EBSCOhost Interface Enhancements

In response to feedback from our customers, we have added several enhancements to the recently redesigned EBSCOhost interface. Below is a summary of the new features now available:


  • A new Image Quick View limiter replaces the Articles With Images limiter

  • The Image Quick View limiter includes multiple sort options by image type. Can I limit my EBSCOhost search results to articles that have Image Quick View available? Can I set the Image Quick View limiter to display under Limit your results on the EBSCOhost Result List screen?

  • Direct link to the Basic Search Screen from both the Basic and Advanced Search Screens

  • Keyword renamed New Search

  • Result List mouse over text changed from Refine Search to Search Modes and Limiters

  • Entire phrase for cited references on Result List replaces the number of references in parentheses

  • Search mode specified on Result List green bar

  • Search History View Results anchor positioning improved

  • Date Slider Bar with original search date ranges How do I use the Date Slider feature in EBSCOhost? (http://support.epnet.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=3873)

  • Additional Help link added to Choose Databases Screen

  • Publication name and date added to NewsBank results
