BioOne Announces 2010 Collections

BioOne is pleased to welcome five new titles and their respective not-for-profit publishers to the 2010 BioOne Collections. These new titles further enhance what has become a leading resource for organismal, ecological, and conservation biology research.

Four titles will join the BioOne.2 collection, while one title will be added to the BioOne.1 collection. Four of the five titles are ISI-ranked, while the fifth is a promising new-start in its third year of publication. Enhancing BioOne's international profile, two of the publications are based in the United Kingdom and two are based in Poland. The fifth is US-based with a long and distinguished publishing history.

Due to these additions, in 2010 BioOne will be home to 159 total publications, 111 of which (70%) are ISI-ranked. Furthermore, 70 of BioOne's titles (44%) have their current content available online exclusively through BioOne's sophisticated new platform which debuted in January 2009. BioOne continues to be home to eleven open access publications, freely available to all users and fully integrated with the subscription-based collections.

In recognition of library constraints amidst a troubled economy, BioOne has frozen 2010 pricing at 2009 rates for both collections. For subscription or trial information, please contact Minitex. 2010 collection title lists in .pdf and .csv formats are also available for download at http://www.bioone.org/page/about/content/titles.

Search FirstSearch Databases through WorldCat Local, WorldCat Local "quick start" and WorldCat.org

from OCLC:

Users of WorldCat.org, WorldCat Local and WorldCat Local "quick start" can now search FirstSearch databases and all other OCLC electronic resource services you provide through an upgraded interface. Integrated search results include resources from all services - OCLC FirstSearch® databases, NetLibrary™ eBooks and eAudiobooks, Electronic Collections Online™ eJournals, ArchiveGrid® archival collection descriptions and CAMIO® (the Catalog of Art Museum Images Online).

A simple search box connects users with FirstSearch databases and other OCLC electronic resources to which your library subscribes in a user-friendly experience that delivers relevancy ranking of locally-owned items cataloged in WorldCat, faceted browsing and simultaneous searching of an unlimited number of databases. Soon, users also benefit from access to social tools such as personal profiles, reviews and ratings and list creation and sharing that are not available in existing service interfaces.

This enhanced access is the first step toward more full integration of OCLC electronic resources, with the goal of eventually making WorldCat.org, WorldCat Local and WorldCat Local "quick start" the primary interface to these services. OCLC plans to release enhancements to the new interface on an ongoing basis.

A URL just for YOUR library
A new WorldCat URL specific to your library has already been created. Log on to the new Service Configuration module to review your library's URL and customize your site with library-specific branding. Also configure settings that enable access to the OCLC content to which your library subscribes.

Access to current services continues
These enhancements let your library offer users a new interface for access to OCLC electronic resources at no additional charge. Existing interfaces for FirstSearch, NetLibrary, CAMIO and ArchiveGrid will be available through at least 2011 to ensure a smooth transition for library staff and users. Staff at your library controls the timing of the introduction of these enhancements to your library's users.

For more information
Visit www.oclc.org/access for additional details about access enhancements.

An Introduction to WorldCat.org Access to OCLC Electronic Resources

from OCLC:

Sign up today for a free, live Web session to learn more about plans for single-search access to your library’s OCLC eContent through the familiar WorldCat.org interface.

In July, WorldCat.org will add library-branded, single-search-box access to NetLibrary® eBooks and eAudiobooks, Electronic Collections Online™ eJournals, OCLC FirstSearch databases, ArchiveGrid® archival collection descriptions and CAMIO®—the Catalog of Art Museum Images Online. (Current interfaces for OCLC eContent services will continue to be available through 2011 to give you and your users ample time to become familiar with the new interface. )

This will give information seekers easier access to a wide range of electronic resources on WorldCat.org in a way that eliminates the need for multiple access points.

Whether your library subscribes to a single FirstSearch database or NetLibrary eBook or to a wide range of content, your users will be able to connect with this content - and the entire WorldCat database - through a WorldCat search box branded for your library.

Please join us for a Web information session on Thursday, April 30, 2009 to learn more about plans for single-search access to your library’s OCLC eContent through the familiar WorldCat.org interface. The program will include a “sneak preview” of the new interface that will be included with your OCLC eContent subscription at no additional charge.

Project MUSE MARC Records for 2009

from Project MUSE:

Project MUSE is pleased to announce that 2009 MARC records are now available for each of MUSE's six collections. The record sets are full level description in the MARC21 format and include Library of Congress (LC) subject headings. Each collection's record set includes journals launched as of the beginning of the current subscription year. Updates to the record sets are added periodically during the year as new journals are launched. You may sign up to receive an email when the updated records are available.

The MUSE MARC records are available for downloading from the MUSE website. The records are offered to subscribing institutions at no charge. The record sets include all journals in a collection including those that are no longer contributing new issues to MUSE. Even though a journal does not contribute new issues to MUSE, all previously launched issues of that journal remain online and accessible to subscribers.

Additional details, instructions for downloading, and a link to sign up for email notification of updated records are found on the MUSE MARC Records page:

http://muse.jhu.edu/about/librarians/marc_records.html

Questions about MUSE MARC records may be sent to muse@press.jhu.edu.

Project MUSE Expands More by This Author Feature

from Project MUSE:

Project MUSE is pleased to announce the addition of a new search feature that quickly connects users to more articles by an author. Look for the new 'More By' feature on each article. The 'More By' feature appears for each author listed as contributing to the article. Users can simply click on the linked author name to find additional articles in MUSE by the author.

In addition to providing quick access to more MUSE articles by the author, MUSE expanded the search to include links to more works by the author in Google Scholar and OCLC WorldCat. Google Scholar indexes peer-reviewed articles, books, theses, papers and abstracts from a wide variety of sources across many disciplines. Linking to the author's works in WorldCat using the 'Find in a library' link adds depth to a user's research, as the WorldCat record provides information about access to all formats of the author's work. WorldCat allows users to search the collections of libraries in their communities, as well as many others around the world, for both physical items and digital content.

2009-10 Oxford University Press Pricing and New Subscriptions Promotion

For the July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010 subscription period, Oxford University Press has announced that there will be no price increases. So, pricing for all 2009 - 10 subscriptions will be calculated using the 08-09 pricing models.

Also, OUP is offering a promotion for NEW subscription orders. For customers wanting to add NEW online resources (excluding law products), OUP will charge the 12-month price but access will begin immediately. So, depending on when you place your order, you will get either 15, 14, or 13 months of access for the price of 12 months (all subscriptions will run through 6/30/2010).

Minitex has not started the OUP renewal process yet (if all goes as planned, this will start in late April). However, we thought it best to give advance notice of OUP’s promotion for new subscriptions.

If you would like a trial, pricing, or have any questions or comments, please contact CPERS.

Project MUSE becomes latest WorldCat partner

from OCLC:

OCLC welcomes Project MUSE to the growing list WorldCat partners. MUSE chose WorldCat to help connect its users to more articles by an author through a new discovery feature called ‘More By,’ which appears on each article display within Project MUSE. Users simply click on the linked contributing author name to find additional articles in MUSE, WorldCat.org and Google Scholar.

Partnering with WorldCat means that Project MUSE users can now connect to the author’s works in libraries, through WorldCat’s distinctive “Find in a library” link. Melanie Schaffner, Marketing and Sales Manager for Project MUSE, explains that, “Including a link to WorldCat adds depth to a user’s research, as the WorldCat record provides information about access to all formats of the author’s work. WorldCat allows users to search the collections of libraries in their communities, as well as many others around the world, for both physical items and digital content.”

Managed by the Johns Hopkins University Press, Project MUSE represents a unique collaboration between libraries and publishers to provide an online source for full-text access to more than 400 prestigious humanities and social sciences journals.

OvidSP Enhancements Scheduled for the End of March

from OVID:

Dear Ovid Customer:

As you know, at Ovid we believe in a continuous technology evolution of our OvidSP platform. We deploy multiple releases throughout the year with new functionality and interface enhancements that are based directly on user and information manager feedback.

We’re pleased to announce that the next release of OvidSP will be live at the end of March! Designed to give you and your users even more search flexibility and efficiency, the following new functionality will be available as part of this release:

  • Customizable Search Fields – Display frequently used fields in a new MyFields tab-you no longer have to select them each time you perform a search since OvidSP will remember them each time you log in. Easily add or remove all other fields-now located in a Show All tab-based on your preferences.

  • New Limit to Star Ranking – Limit searches to generate results with a specific ranking, such as five or four stars. Remember-ranking denotes relevancy; five stars indicate the highest relevancy.

  • Enhanced Limit-to-Publication-Year – You will be able to select “current” (i.e., “Limit to 2006-Current”), rather than a specific year, as your end date so you can stay up-to-date with the most current information available.

  • Quarterly AutoAlerts – Set up to receive AutoAlerts on a quarterly basis.

  • Improved highlighting – We’re improving the accuracy of highlighting in OvidSP for both Basic Search as well as Advanced Search. Only specific search terms used will be highlighted; these will be highlighted in yellow. Expanded terms will be highlighted in red.

  • Clin-eguide customers only – You will find a new link from the main search page of all search modes directly to the Clin-eguide homepage.

Stay tuned for details on a specific time and day for this release.

In the coming weeks, you’ll see sample screenshots of these new enhancements in the OvidSP Resource Center. Remember to check the Resource Center regularly for new informational materials, training courses, and online tutorials. Contact support@ovid.com if you have any questions.

Regards,

Teen Health and Wellness Personal Story Project

Kirkus Reviews (September 2007) wrote of Teen Health and Wellness that "the articles are written specifically for teens and are reviewed by specialists in the appropriate fields. . . . A powerful resource tailored to an audience badly in need of accurate, reliable information."

One way that Rosen Publishing has tailored Teen Health and Wellness specifically for teens is by encouraging them to write first-person stories for inclusion in the database via the Personal Story Project.

Teens can submit a Personal Story at any time. If an essay is selected for inclusion, the author receives a letter of commendation from Rosen Publishing notifying them of acceptance and a $20 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble.

School Library Journal featured a a writing class at Shelton School in Dallas, Texas, that submitted articles to the Personal Story Project. Recently, Rosen has also partnered with ALA YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) for Teen Tech Week.

Pre-CINAHL Content Merged w/CINAHL Databases

from EBSCO:

Dear EBSCO Customer,

We are pleased to announce that we have incorporated the content in the Pre-CINAHL database with our CINAHL products to streamline your search experience.  Pre-CINAHL was intended to provide current awareness of new journal articles, and included a rotating file of limited bibliographic information (no subject searching), which was available to searchers only for the time when these articles were being assigned additional indexing. This enabled users to gain access to article citations that otherwise would not have been available. These early article citations are now part of all CINAHL products.

This update means that:
  • All of the records you wish to access in Pre-CINAHL can be searched in your subscribed CINAHL product
  • If you wish to exclude these records in your CINAHL product search, you can use the “Exclude Pre-CINAHL” search limiter

Therefore, on March 31, 2009 we will discontinue the Pre-CINAHL database as a stand-alone product. On that date, Pre-CINAHL, alone, will no longer be accessible to you. Please delete or change any links you may have created to this product.

The new CINAHL Support Center (http://support.ebscohost.com/cinahl) is available whenever you need support in learning how to use CINAHL products, promoting CINAHL products to others, or when training new users on how to maximize the many features and benefits of CINAHL databases.

If you need assistance, please visit EBSCO's Support Site (http://support.ebscohost.com) to learn about new features, search among thousands of FAQs, download Flash tutorials, Help Sheets or User Guides, or communicate with Technical Support using the EBSCO Support Form (http://support.ebscohost.com/contact/askus.php).

Project MUSE News: MUSE Releases First Vodcast

from Project MUSE:

Project MUSE invites users to view our latest research tool: a vodcast. The vodcast, "Research MUSEings Vodcasts: Discovering Linked Subject Headings," is a quick tutorial about the benefits of using MUSE's linked subject headings in your research.

A vodcast is a video podcast. The MUSE vodcast is a tool for both users and librarians and runs just over three minutes in length. Users can learn, on their own, what subject headings are, where to find them in MUSE, and how they help locate articles specific to a research topic. Librarians may find the vodcast useful as a supplement to instruction classes. The vodcast is a lighthearted approach to demystifying the notion of Library of Congress Subject Headings as they appear in MUSE.

On the MUSE website, find the link for the vodcast in the Training Materials section under the Tools & Resources and Librarians tabs, http://muse.jhu.edu/about/resources/vodcasts.html.

We hope you find the vodcast a helpful tool for conducting research in MUSE journals. Questions about the vodcast may be directed to MUSE Customer Service at muse@press.jhu.edu

EBSCOhost Integrated Search Coming Soon

 from EBSCO:

We are very excited to announce that in just a few months, EBSCOhost Integrated Search will be made available.  We are confident that you will find this to be the true one-stop research environment that has thus far eluded the library world.

Until now federated search products have struggled to offer the kind of unified search experience that users want.  Our research shows that many customers who are using federated search products are unhappy with four essential components:

1.) Search Quality
2.) Search Speed
3.) Customer Service
4.) Cost

Because the recently revitalized EBSCOhost interface is the essence of EBSCOhost Integrated Search, it leverages the EBSCOhost features and functionality that you know, eliminates unnecessary end-user confusion (and training), offers a single point for all usage reports, gives fast response times, and provides a cost effective search solution.  EBSCOhost Integrated Search allows librarians to use the power of EBSCOhost to search not only all of their EBSCO products, but also ALL other electronic resources including those from other database aggregators, OPACs, publisher packages, and virtually any other electronic resource.

EBSCO will not charge for EBSCOhost databases to be included in this service, and as a result, the number of connectors will be reduced when pricing.  Due to this, customers of multiple EBSCOhost databases may find the service to be affordable relative to other options.

EBSCOhost Integrated Search is coming soon.  So, if you are looking to change, renew or just considering your first federated search product…please wait. You’ll be glad you did.

If you would like to see the initial designs, receive pricing, and/or obtain more information, please contact us at: information@ebscohost.com.

EBSCO To Discontinue Text Only Interface

from EBSCO:

With the success of last summer's EBSCOhost 2.0 fully ADA compliant release, you now have an excellent alternative to the EBSCOhost Text Only interface, which will be fully retired in the spring of 2009. For more information and user reviews of EBSCO's 508 Accessibility, please visit this site.

If you use the Text Only interface for accessing EBSCOhost via a handheld device, you will find EBSCOhost 2.0 equally effective. A brand new product for accessing EBSCOhost using handheld devices is currently in development and targeted for release in the spring.

For those who continue to use the Text Only interface to minimize connectivity speed issues based on your local network providers, EBSCOhost 2.0 provides a superior alternative to Text Only.

Please change your links and start using EBSCOhost 2.0 now, to give your users time to become accustomed to its streamlined design and features before Text Only's discontinuance, and to take advantage of all that EBSCOhost 2.0 has to offer. For assistance, please see this FAQ, or contact Technical Support at any time, using the EBSCO Support Form.

EBSCO’s redesigned Customer Success Center

from EBSCO listserv:

Dear EBSCO Customer,

We are pleased to announce the release of EBSCO’s redesigned Customer Success Center (http://www.ebscohost.com/customerSuccess). The new Success Center features a cleaner format, includes informative, animated Flash items, and has been reorganized for streamlined navigation.

The most notable Success Center enhancement is its library categories. Users can search by library type, e.g., Public Libraries, Corporations, Colleges/Universities, to find pertinent library tools faster than ever before! Each category has its own customized resources, from best practice examples, fundraising ideas, marketing tools, EBSCO logos and buttons and suggested reading, to lessons plans for teachers and success tools for students on research techniques, avoiding plagiarism and other important topics.

All of these valuable tools can be found in easily navigable columns, which can be expanded/collapsed with one click. The result is efficient access to the support materials and tools that you and your users need.

Along the bottom of the site's homepage, you will find icons to our free databases: LISTA and GreenFILE, the rotating Feature of the Month section (which highlights new and noteworthy resources), and the site's abundance of Support & Training tools.

Please take a moment to explore the Customer Success Center (http://www.ebscohost.com/customerSuccess), and become familiar with its new and revised categories, features and resources. We welcome your feedback, suggestions and any questions you may have.

New Project Muse Interface Coming Soon

from Project Muse:

As has been previously announced, Project MUSE is preparing to unveil a new web site design, developed to ease navigation, increase discovery, and improve the user experience for researchers, librarians, and publishers. We received an overwhelmingly positive reaction and much helpful feedback during previews of the new design at the ALA conference in June, and are pleased to announce that the release of the new interface is imminent.

The launch of the new MUSE interface at http://muse.jhu.edu is expected to occur within a week. The new site design features enhanced informational sections and improved navigation and layout. Subscriber access should not be at all affected by the rollout of the new design; the changes are to the navigation, functionality, and appearance of the web site, not to access or authentication systems. Searches of MUSE content utilizing our search engine will work much as they currently do, with a more user-friendly design and some additional search limiters available to users.

A further announcement will be sent upon the actual launch of the new site interface. Please direct any questions to muse@press.jhu.edu.

This means that all access to these databases will be supported only via EBSCOhost. To ensure that your access to the databases will continue, and that your account is set up with the new connectors, please contact your federated search vendor directly.

In the event that you have developed independent "meta-search" solutions, please see our XML Web Service overview (http://supportforms.epnet.com/eit/webservice). ProQuest Maintenance: April 12, 19, and 26

Dear ProQuest Customer,

Three ProQuest platform enhancements are scheduled for release on April 26th, 2008. To prepare for this release, a series of maintenance windows will occur on the following dates (maintenance window time in parentheses):

  • April 12th, 2008 at 22:00 EDT (2 hours)

  • April 19th, 2008 at 22:00 EDT (2 hours)

  • April 26th, 2007 at 22:00 EDT (12 hours)

See below for a more complete list of times and time zones.

Enhancements include:

  • RSS feeds - End users will be able to create RSS feeds for any search and active publications on the ProQuest platform (RSS feeds are not available for inactive or ceased publications). RSS feeds are a great way for researchers to keep on top of the latest news and research in their field, and a great way for libraries to broaden the visibility of electronic resources they license.

  • Arabic interface - A new Arabic interface will include interface labels and search limiters translated into Arabic and interface elements in Arabic - navigation bars, tabbed options, etc. - will read right to left. Content will remain in the language provided, and read from left to right. We welcome feedback from Arabic readers, which can be submitted through the Product Suggestion Form. on the ProQuest web site.

  • Updates to COUNTER reports - COUNTER reports in CSV format have been updated by removing an extra column on the left hand side of the report. This update will make it easier for libraries to manipulate the data in COUNTER reports when trying to load them into COUNTER reporting tools.

The following products will be unavailable during these windows:

  • ProQuest interface products, ProQuest Historical Newspapers (traditional and graphical K12 interface), American Periodicals Series

  • Third-party databases such as ERIC® PlusText

  • ProQuest Archiver™

  • eLibrary®, SIRS®, and CultureGrams™

  • Chadwyck-Healey products housed in the US (all products with domain names ending with chadwyck.com)

  • "Digital Vault" products, including ProQuest Dissertations & Theses and Digital Sanborn Maps

ProQuest CSA Illumina Platform Enhancements

from the ProQuest listserv:

Dear CSA Illumina Customers,

On April 7, 2008 an exciting set of enhancements will be available on CSA Illumina. The following features will help empower both the librarian and the end user.

Custom Categories
New to the CSA Administrative Module (http://md1.csa.com/ids70/admin_profile.php) is the ability to add customized groups of databases. Through a new tab labeled "Custom Categories" administrators may create brand new categories populated with the databases they choose. There are no limits on the number of custom category groups, or the number of databases that may be added to each group. The four existing subject areas: Arts & Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Technology will remain, but can be placed anywhere in the list of Custom Categories. Your patrons will see the Custom Categories in the "Change Databases" selection box in the CSA Illumina interface.

In addition to administratively created Custom Categories, patrons who have created My Research personalization accounts and who are logged into My Research will see their group of Preferred Databases as the first option in the "Change Databases" selection box.

New Interface for Gale Literature Resource Center

From the Gale (Cengage) InfoTrac listserv:

Rollout of new Literature environment November 2007-summer 2008

New interface for Literature Resource Center
New cross-searching environment—Literature Resources from Gale

Literature Resource Center customers can migrate their accounts whenever they wish to the new interface released in November 2007. We are continuing to support the older interface at least until July 2008 as many customers do not want to make the change until the end of the current school year.

You can enable or disable the new interface using our administration module, ITconfig. Once logged into ITconfig, select “Locations” and you will see an option titled “Enable Literature Resource Center 4.0”.

Customers can also request the change by contacting Technical Support at Gale.TechnicalSupport@cengage.com.

If you would like to trial the new interface first, contact your Gale sales representative directly or at 1-800-877-4253 (press 2) to set up a free trial.

Highlights of the new interface include:

  • Enhanced “findability.” Searching by author name has always been an LRC strength—but now you get excellent results searching by title or topic, right from the Basic Search screen. Improved subject indexing and a complete restructuring of our content get LRC users to premium content with a single click, and a new approach to tabbed results helps them go straight to exactly the type of content they need.

  • Great new tools.
    o Browsable search indexes
o Search by or within journal or reference title
o Multiple options for sorting, filtering and searching within results
    o Easy bookmarking
o Guided Tour accessible from the tool bar
o “How to Cite” feature generates MLA and APA citations and supports EndNote, ProCite, RefWorks and Reference Manager

  • New cross-searching environment
o As always, Scribner Writers Series and Twayne’s Authors Online can be integrated as modules of Literature Resource Center
o “Literature Resources from Gale” cross-searches Literature Resource Center with LitFinder, the MLA International Bibliography, or both.
o Customers with LRC and either LitFinder or MLA can cross-search a custom GVRL collection
o New tools and features for MLA searches
o More cross-searching options to come in 2008

Lexis-Nexis Ends Roper Polls Content

From the Lexis-Nexis Academic Listserv:

Dear Colleagues,

I regret to announce that LexisNexis Academic will lose the Roper Polls
content this month. The publisher has decided to opt out of the
agreement that made it possible for us to bring this content to academic
researchers. LexisNexis understands how important these polls are to
researchers. Our licensing team made a very determined effort to retain
academic rights, and they will continue discussions with the publisher
in hopes of reinstating this content in the future. The publisher has
made it clear that no reinstatement will happen in 2008, and has
directed us to remove the Roper Polls materials from LexisNexis Academic
prior to the end of 2007.

Some of you may have noticed that the Roper Polls materials were not
available beginning on Thursday, December 6. This was due to a mistake
on our part when the licensing change was first processed. The materials
have been reinstated for the time being, and will remain available until
approximately December 21.

Best regards,

Alistair

Alistair Morrison | Product Manager, LexisNexis Academic

New Date for Discontinuation of Basic BIOSIS on OCLC FirstSearch

From the OCLC FirstSearch listserv:

Access to the Basic BIOSIS database on the OCLC FirstSearch service, previously scheduled to end on December 31, 2007, will now continue through June 30, 2008. This change is due to a schedule change from Thomson Scientific, producer of Basic BIOSIS. Libraries that support research in the sciences may wish to use other databases that index much of the same content as Basic BIOSIS. Related databases in the field of science include:

  • Biological and Agricultural Index (indexes approximately 40% of the same content as Basic BIOSIS)

  • Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management (indexes approximately 57% of the same content as Basic BIOSIS)

  • Together, the Biological and Agricultural Index and Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management databases cover approximately 97% of the 395 journals indexed in Basic BIOSIS.
  • WorldCat, which complements databases in all subject areas, with library ownership information that identifies libraries that own needed resources.

Please contact MINITEX or OCLC Customer Support with questions about the discontinuation of access to Basic BIOSIS on FirstSearch.

Checkpoint Systems and 3M Library Converge on RFID

News Release from ALA TechSource:
Two of the top competitors in the library-focused RFID and library security products
arena, 3M Library Systems and Checkpoint Systems, have consolidated their
efforts to produce and market products to libraries. The arrangement, announced
October 29, 2007, results in melding the 3M Library Systems marketing channels
with products from Checkpoint Systems. Effective the beginning of 2008, 3M
Library Systems will serve as the exclusive worldwide distributor and service provider
for Checkpoint’s family of products oriented toward libraries.
Prior to this strategic partnership, both 3M Library Systems and Checkpoint
Systems were major competitors in the growing library RFID market. This alliance
effectively combines the efforts of both companies in this arena. 3M Library Systems
and Checkpoint Systems will continue to develop and manufacture products
and both lines will be sold and supported worldwide by 3M Library Systems.
3M Library Systems has established itself as one of the major providers of
security, self checkout, and RFID products to libraries. The company has provided
security, productivity, and information management solutions to the industry for
more than 35 years. Its products include the Tattle-Tape security strips and detection
equipment based on electromagnetic technology, self-service stations for both
checkout and check-in of library materials, and many products based on RFID.
Checkpoint Systems develops security and RFID products for a variety of
industries, including libraries. Checkpoint’s library-oriented products include its
flagship Intelligent Library System, a suite of components that provide self checkout
and return of materials by library patrons, exit gate security, collection inventory,
usage reports, and other functions. The company also offers the DiscMate
digital media security system, and CheckPASS, a system for print management and
for scheduling public access computers.
A Marketing, Sales, and Support Alliance
This strategic sales and marketing alliance gives 3M Library Systems full
responsibility for the marketing and support of Checkpoint products to libraries.
Checkpoint will continue to develop and manufacture products, but they will
be sold exclusively by 3M. The partnership will also result in a new product
developed by Checkpoint to be sold through 3M called The Library Advocate, a
new Web-based library productivity software product.

3M will continue to develop, manufacture, market, and support its own products
as well. This arrangement significantly expands the portfolio of products that
3M Library Systems is able to offer to libraries through its worldwide marketing
channels, and the alliance gives 3M access to a larger customer base by virtue
of the libraries that have already implemented Checkpoint’s products.

EBSCO Visual Search Redesign Arriving Late December

In early 2006, EBSCO introduced a third search option to EBSCOhost users, aptly named Visual Search. The graphically-appealing user interface was well-received by visual learners, providing zoomable frames populated with circles and squares which represented subject groupings, citations, and articles.

At the end of calendar year 2007, EBSCO will implement an advanced, newly-designed Visual Search option, continuing the graphically-appealing premise, with added punch and functionality. Users will enjoy the bonus of being able to select either of two Visual Search interface styles, presented in Adobe's Flash format. Library administrators who have access to the EBSCOadmin administrative tool will be able to control which of the two styles will serve as the default for their institution's subscription to EBSCOhost.

One of the two styles will include colorful blocks, each of which will represent a record or article related to the initial search criteria. Sorting and filtering options by date and relevance will provide users with the ability to focus and manage search results easily and efficiently.

The Columns interface style will enable users to conduct a search and see resulting rectangles (which represent articles neatly formed in columns), zip down the screen. Users will be able to see more articles by gliding their mouse to the edge of the screen. As with the block design, results will be "stacked" by publication or subject, sorted by relevance or date, or filtered using a date range slider bar.

Users will be able to select subject clusters to narrow a search and display a new column of results. When a user clicks on a subject, the previous sets of results will be retained, and the subjects will be illuminated and connected to form a bright “breadcrumb” trail to assist users in visualizing the path taken to reach their end results. This design will streamline the process of backtracking and embarking on a new path, for Visual Search users.

To see a screenshot of the redesign, click here.

Gale Common Menu Interface Change

From Gale:

As you are well aware, Gale constantly strives to create new products and/or enhance existing ones so that they are the most informative, usable products available. To that, we are pleased to announce an upcoming change to your Gale Common Menu - the gateway to your Gale databases. At the end of October, the standard Gale common menu will be refreshed with icons to offer visual cues to users. In the past, this menu showed icons. We are now restoring these icons in response to many customer requests and we believe you will be pleased with the results.

What Do You Need To Do?

Nothing! The refreshed common menu will be visible to all customers who currently use it and the URL will remain the same, so you so not need to do anything to access the refreshed menu.

What Will the New Common Menu Look Like?

The Common Menu will look very much like it does today. Below are a couple screen captures that demonstrate what you, your patrons and your students will see when the enhancement occurs.

PDF Version: http://support.gale.com/article.asp?article=1807&p=10

HTML Version: http://support.gale.com/article.asp?article=1806&p=10

What If I Don't Want My Common Menu to Change?

We are currently working on a solution that will allow you to either disable these new icons or configure unique icons for custom databases through ITconfig. Our goal is to have this capability in place as the new icons are added. We will keep you informed as we move closer to completing that phase.

As always, if you have any questions about these changes, you can contact our support by calling 1-800-877-4253 (Option 4) or emailing us.

NetLibrary Enhancements

OCLC has announced Net Library enhancements and changes:

Patron Site

  • eAudiobooks can now have multiple subjects
Our Collections department is now designating multiple subjects to new eAudiobook titles as they are being loaded to the patron site. Titles already on the site will be updated incrementally.
    Key Benefits:

    • Popular titles can now appear in both the "popular" categories, such as popular-fiction, as well as the primary category of the title, such as mystery.

    • As a result, discoverability of eAudiobook titles is greatly improved for both collection development librarians and library users

  • Sorting search results
The option to sort search results by "relevance" has been changed to "rank" to make the terminology easier to understand. This is a change in wording only, the functionality remains the same.

TitleSelect
  • Removal of the size cap for downloadable eBooks
[Describe the limitation then describe the change] All new PDF books loaded will be eligible for offline checkout. The previous restriction of 300 Mb has been removed going forward.
A determination will be made of existing titles with the size cap limitation as to whether we will reprocess them and make them eligible for offline checkout.

  • Return of the Special Pricing Program designator
TitleSelect is once again displaying the SPP designator that links to the program description page. This means that customers will again see when title is available as part of another product such as a Subject Set and link directly to the page for that product.

WorldCat Analysis Enhancements

OCLC announced two new enhancements to WorldCat Analysis:

  1. You can now graph your analysis results by column (in addition to graphing by row). This makes it easier to graph data across multiple criteria (e.g. holdings in a publication date range by subject; holdings by subject in a particular format, etc.).
  2. You can now limit your analysis by LC, Dewey, or NLM call number. This allows you to quickly drill-down to the most granular level of the Conspectus that contains the call number you are interested in.

McGraw-Hill is in the process of developing a new technology platform for AccessScience. In mid-August 2007, AccessScience 2.0 will be launching with a new interface, improved search engine and statistics reporting. You will receive additional communication regarding the exact launch time.

AccessScience features offer over 8,500 online full-text articles the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology 10th edition, Research Updates from the McGraw-Hill Yearbooks of Science & Technology, and 110,000+ definitions from the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, as well as 13,000 illustrations and graphics, and bibliographies containing more than 28,000 literature citations.

As we migrate to AccessScience 2.0 you will experience no change in your service or authentication and no action is required on behalf of the library during our migration. However, customers using federated search engines or bar code authentication will need some additional information.

We have prepared an AccessScience 2.0 FAQ to answer all of your technical and content questions including federated search engines and bar code authentication.

If you have additional questions please contact your sales representative by telephone at 1-877-840-2297 or our customer service team at 1-888-307-5984 or via e-mail.

Best regards,
The AccessScience Team

Gale PowerSearch Interface Cutover

Gale has been sending out updates regarding their new PowerSearch interface and cutover the past few weeks. EBSCO Domain Name Change

Effective June 30, EBSCO changed their domain name to ebscohost (from epnet).

From the EBSCO listserv:

Greetings,

As previously announced in our email communications, and in the Top Story on EBSCO’s Support Site, The EBSCO Publishing domain change is now in effect. EBSCO’s automatic redirect of search.epnet.com (etc.) will end on Saturday, June 30, 2007.

This domain change was concurrent with expanding our data center capacity, and will allow us to provide improved online service.

Please take a moment to ensure that you have made all necessary changes to your EBSCO URL’s to accommodate a smooth transition to the new domain.

PROXY SERVER INSTRUCTIONS: Proxy users MUST add the *.ebscohost.com domain to their proxy configurations in order to ensure uninterrupted access to EBSCOhost. To view a typical configuration example, please see this FAQ:

How will the new EBSCOhost domain changes affect my EZproxy config file?

Here is a complete list of URLs grouped by product that you should add to your list of exceptions as appropriate.

For a list of general questions and answers about this change, please see this FAQ.

Additionally, as the hosting needs of this service continue to increase, it is necessary to expand addressable IP space. Therefore, customers who have a firewall that allows specific IP ranges are asked to add this new IP address block (72.164.152.1-254), and any hosts on ebscohost.com to their allowable ranges, to avoid any blockage of users' access to EBSCOhost products. For assistance with firewall exceptions, please see this FAQ.

For assistance with the domain change or IP address range expansion, please contact EBSCO's Technical Support Department by calling (800) 758-5995, or sending an inquiry via our Ask Us form.

For additional questions or comments contact MINITEX.

Thomson Learning for Sale

Gordon Macomber, President, Thomson Gale, shared the following letter with us. MINITEX licenses statewide access to Thomson Gale’s K-12 suite of resources and the Spanish-language Informe! database available to you through Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM).

__________________________

November 7, 2006

To our Valued Customers,

It has always been our policy to communicate openly with our customers and business partners. We value our relationship with you and wish to personally share the following information.

Thomson Learning’s parent company, The Thomson Corporation, has announced plans to sell its Thomson Learning business, which includes Thomson Gale. Thomson Learning is fully committed to the library and learning space and, as such, no longer fits with The Thomson Corporation’s long-term strategy of providing business professionals with electronic solutions.

Thomson Gale has been and continues to be a world leader with exceptionally strong offerings, a talented workforce and a focus on customer satisfaction that is the foundation of all that we do. While it’s too early to talk about who the likely buyer of Thomson Learning will be, it is not too early to say that this move will enable us to focus exclusively on more fully serving and satisfying our customers’ needs and wants.

You may be wondering if and how this decision affects your business with us. While we do not have all of the answers right now regarding what business processes may change, we assure you that customer satisfaction has been, and always will be, our top priority.

We are committed to keeping you up to date. To that end, we will provide you with additional information as ongoing decisions are made.

We appreciate your continuing support and confidence in Thomson Gale through this transition and invite you to contact me or any of my colleagues directly should you have questions.

Sincerely,
Gordon Macomber
President, Thomson Gale

Reminder: EBSCOadmin Password Expiration, November 30, 2006

EBSCO has sent this reminder so that you will not be caught off guard.

Last November, EBSCO increased EBSCOadmin password security by adding a secret question option to your EBSCOadmin passwords, and increasing their complexity, in order to protect the integrity of the administrative module you use to customize your users' EBSCOhost search experiences. The new passwords were set up to remain active for a period of one year, which for many of you will expire on November 30, 2006.

To update your EBSCOadmin password before it expires, please log in to your EBSCOadmin account and update the EBSCOadmin password for each administrator who has EBSCOadmin access. (Please note: This does not apply to the passwords used to access EBSCOhost.)

Also, make sure that there is a current email address listed for each administrator for your account. To check this, from the Utility Toolbar, click the EBSCOadmin Security Link. This will show any administrators on the account and their email address. If the email is blank, please make sure to enter this.

For instructions on how to change your password, please refer to this FAQ.

If you have already updated your EBSCOadmin password(s), please ignore this reminder.

EBSCO merges Pre-CINAHL with CINAHL databases

EBSCO has integrated Pre-CINAHL content into their CINAHL Plus, CINAHL with Full Text, and CINAHL Plus with Full Text products. As a result of this integration, EBSCO will be removing Pre-CINAHL as a separate database. This means that, for EBSCO CINAHL subscribers, your users will no longer see a separate listing for Pre-CINAHL on your EBSCO menu of resources. All content will be available through your CINAHL database.

EBSCO will delay removing Pre-CINAHL as a separate database until the end of November 2006. However, EBSCO suggests that, if you are providing your users with a direct link to Pre-CINAHL, you remove Pre-CINAHL direct links now. Please contact EBSCO’s Technical Support staff if you would like assistance with removing a Pre-CINAHL link.

UPDATE: Changes related to recent EBSCOhost interface enhancements

Please see below for a message from EBSCO with regard to the recent EBSCOhost interface enhancements that are affecting your users’ searching experience:

While the ability to "right click" has never been an explicit feature of EBSCOhost, we recognize that many users rely upon it as a common technique for accessing content, from a variety of internet sources, at the same time.

We apologize for the incontinence this loss of functionality has caused you and your patrons and are taking the necessary steps to allow its use across our many products & interfaces. As fundamental pieces of our service must be updated to fully support, and to ensure proper implementation, release of this feature is currently scheduled for November 2006.

We thank you in advance for your patience while we make this improvement. We appreciate your continued feedback and sincerely hope that you will allow us the opportunity to serve you better in the future.

Unexpected functional changes resulting from EBSCOhost's interface enhancement

Some of you may have noticed a few unexpected changes associated with the recent EBSCOhost interface enhancement. We’ve learned from EBSCO that these functional changes that affect your users’ searching experience will be present until an enhancement request has been processed and completed.

Until the enhancement is in place, it is our understanding that users are no longer able to do the following:

  • Open your library’s Web site in a new window using the link in the upper right corner of EBSCO’s search screen, which keeps EBSCO search results visible and accessible.

  • Open several full-text articles at once to permit toggling between articles.

  • Branch out from an initial search with different search terms, limiters, etc. to compare search results.

  • Open the dictionary in a new window to look up words from a full-text article without losing the article.

This enhancement request has been put forth and will be reviewed by EBSCO for consideration. At this time EBSCO does not have a target date for completion of the enhancement request.

Please send me an email if you have any questions or concerns.

CSA completes 2006 PsycINFO reload

CSA announces the completion of the 2006 PsycINFO reload on CSA Illumina. With this reload, approximately 15,000 new records with cited references are now available, along with enhancements to several fields. Regular updating of PsycINFO will now resume.

The 15,000 new PsycINFO records correspond to documents added to PsycARTICLES with the 1894-1984 historical file of nearly 73,000 full text articles from APA journals. Cited references corresponding to these articles were also added to existing PsycINFO records with the 2006 reload.

Record structure enhancements include:

  • Addition of a Grant/Sponsorship field, which provides access to descriptive information on grants, including the grant number and information on the recipient, that funded the research reported.

  • Addition of new qualifiers to the ISBN field in PsycINFO to include electronic formats such as CD, DVD, or XML.

  • Elimination of the Journal URL and Publisher URL fields from the records. At the request of librarians, these fields are being replaced with an interactive Journal and Publisher table, which will be available soon on the APA web site at www.apa.org/psycarticles/coverage.

CSA will be releasing the historical backfiles of PsycARTICLES by mid-October. Reloads of PsycBOOKS and PsycCRITIQUES will follow.

If you have any questions, please send an email to CSA Technical Support or call 1 800 214 2462. (Source: CSA; edited)

EBSCO's domain change and proxy server changes

In late May EBSCO announced a domain name change. For the convenience of its customers, EBSCO will maintain an automatic redirect of http://search.epnet.com (etc.) through the summer of 2007. Customers who do not use a proxy server, and who choose not to update their links once the change becomes official, will have plenty of time in which to do so, because of EBSCO's automatic redirect.

PLEASE NOTE: Although search.epnet.com will continue to be valid via a redirect through 2007, proxy users MUST ADD the *.ebscohost.com domain to their proxy configurations in order to ensure uninterrupted access to EBSCOhost PRIOR to the transition to the new domain in mid-August. Please DO NOT REMOVE *.epnet.com from the existing proxy configuration files. (Source: EBSCO)

Release of the new WorldCat.org Web site

This new site—and a downloadable WorldCat search box you can easily add to your Web site—opens the complete WorldCat database to the public, not just the smaller data subsets utilized by Open WorldCat partner sites such as Google, Yahoo! Search and others. WorldCat.org builds on the success of OCLC’s Open WorldCat Program that has elevated the visibility of library materials on the open Web since the summer of 2003.

The main attraction of the new site is the WorldCat search box. Web users can now search the entire WorldCat database with the method most familiar to them: simple keywords. As in Open WorldCat, each linked result leads to a "Find in a Library" information page. From there, users can enter geographic information such as a zip or postal code, receive a list of nearby libraries that own the item, and link right to a library's online catalog record to initiate circulation activity or access electronic content directly. Users can also create their own WorldCat account and add book reviews, table-of-contents information and notes to many WorldCat items, helping to personalize their library search experience.

From WorldCat.org, any Web user or organization can also easily download and install the free, WorldCat search box to their personal or commercial Web page, allowing even more people to discover library content through WorldCat. Libraries and other groups inside and outside the OCLC cooperative are encouraged to add the box to their sites. We believe that sharing the ability to search for library materials to as many other sites as possible will help increase the awareness of libraries as primary sources of reliable information and helpful personal assistance.

Visit the site to try the new WorldCat search box and download the box to your own Web site. (Source: OCLC)

EBSCOhost has a new domain: ebscohost.com

The EBSCOhost service has moved to a new domain: ebscohost.com.

The transition will happen over a matter of months. The domain name change will be most evident in those links you use to provide access to your EBSCOhost database subscription(s), such as http://search.epnet.com, which should be changed to http://search.ebscohost.com. EBSCO will automatically redirect all search.epnet.com requests once the domain change is completed. However, we strongly recommend that you update your links to reflect the new domain as soon as possible.

WilsonWeb search interface enhancements

H.W. Wilson has announced enhancements to its WilsonWeb search interface. See below for details of just two of these enhancements:

Subject Pathfinder. Links at the top of the WilsonWeb results screens now help guide research by suggesting subtopics or broader topics related to a searcher's initial search strategy. Subject Pathfinder displays the subject headings appearing most often in the articles that comprise the search results and can lead researchers to more precise or broader terms in their topic of interest.

Spell Checker. A spell checker is automatically activated when there are no results for a search. The Spell Checker suggests a different spelling for words and names in searches. Much more than just a simple dictionary, Spell Checker draws its terms from all the terms in the records of the database being searched, for much more relevant coverage. (Source: H.W.
