Free Shuttles to the Job Fair!!!

busShuttle.jpg.gif

During the U of M Job and Internship Fair on February 23, free shuttle buses will be available to transport students and staff to and from the Minneapolis Convention Center. Separate buses will serve the St. Paul Campus and the Minneapolis Campus.
The bus service will function basically like it has in the past, but due to light-rail construction on the Minneapolis campus, changes needed to be made to the bus stops used on the East Bank and West Bank. We consulted with the Parking and Transportation Services office on these changes. Buses will now stop at three locations on the West and East Banks:
--- West Bank: Near Mondale Hall on 19th Ave. S.
--- East Bank: On University Avenue at the intersection with Pleasant Street
--- East Bank: On University Avenue at the Rec Center
(Note that no changes have been made to our St. Paul Campus stop, which is at the St. Paul Student Center.)
For more details on Job Fair Transportation options, including more information about the bus stops (and a link to a handy Google Map showing the Minneapolis stops), details about wheelchair-accessible buses, and parking/directions information for those driving to the fair, is on the Job Fair website. New Undergraduate Public Heath Minor

Announcing the new undergraduate Public Health minor at the University of Minnesota!
Its finally here! Students can now declare the University of Minneosta's new undergraduate Public Health Minor!

The new Public Health Minor is a collaboration between the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Public Health. This minor is ideal for undergraduate students interested in Public Health issues which can be explored through courses spanning the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Public Health curriculum spectrum.
Protecting the public's health requires addressing challenges that are influenced as much by individual behavior, social behavior, and the particulars of culture and history as they are by biology, chemistry, and physics. Indeed, understanding things like biology, the environment, social and political-economic systems, and technology as well as the methods necessary to study public health will equip students to protect the health and well-being of the population. To better understand public health, College of Liberal Arts students and students from other colleges are invited and encouraged to enroll in the Undergraduate Minor in Public Health as a complement to their major degree programs. The program includes coursework from both the School of Public Health and the College of Liberal Arts.

This innovative minor--offering a broad training in approaches to and understandings of public health--is designed to give students a foundation in the language, concepts, and methods used when addressing population-level health challenges. The minor can serve as a foundation for further study in public health, in other health professions, or in any field in which the health of persons and populations is a relevant concern. Public Health Minor courses also contribute to a comprehensive liberal arts education.

The new Public Health Minor is being administered through the advising offices of both the Department of Sociology and the Department of Geography.

Students can find the Public Health minor requirements and declaration application by visiting the Geography and Sociology department webpages: www.geog.umn.edu/undergrad/ or www.soc.umn.edu/undergrad/

IMPORTANT CURRICULAR INFORMATION: While information is listed on the University Catalog, it is important to be aware of the following change. The Capstone curse under the Global Impact section of the minor must be PubH 3600 or by advisor approval only.

To declare the minor, please print out and complete the minor declaration application (see department links above). Next, contact Public Health Minor advising (pubhadv@umn.edu) to set up a time to meet with an advisor (Jeanette Simmonds Department of Geography Or Becky Mooney Department of Sociology)

Thinking about traveling for spring break?

suitcases.jpg
Consider taking part in a Pay It Forward Tour with Students Today Leaders Forever, or participating in a Y Immersion spring break trip with the University YMCA!

The Pay It Forward Tour (PITF) is a multi-day, multi-city experience engaging students in service and leadership. Nou is an MLK senior who participated in PITF last spring break and took a trip to Washington, D.C. During the tour, Nou and other students participated in a variety of projects in cities along the way D.C: helped get a house prepped and painted for a family in need, took part in clean up projects, visited with residents at a nursing home, and sorted donated goods like school supplies and clothes for those in need.

Nou's favorite part of the experience was knowing that the small amount of time spent volunteering in each city added up to make a big difference to the different organizations and projects they worked with, and she would "definitely recommend" this opportunity to other students.

Students can also participate in a service-learning spring break trip through the University YMCA and can learn more by visiting the Y Immersion website. More details are available for Pay It Forward Tours here.

Have you participated in one of these programs or another service-learning trip over break? Tell us about it in the comments section below!

Undergraduate Research Program - URP
The purpose of the Undergraduate Research Program is to provide promising students from populations under-represented in research with knowledge, skills, and experience in healthcare research. This program provides research training through a structured core curriculum, closely supervised research projects, clinical research seminars and participation in selected additional symposia and scientific meetings. The cornerstone of the research training program is the trainee's participation in a research project. This will be under the direct supervision of faculty mentors who represent a cross-section of ongoing clinical and translational research in areas such as lab sciences, community health, survey, qualitative, and clinical. With input and oversight from the assigned faculty mentor, the trainee will design a mutually acceptable research training plan, according to his or her career interests and the ongoing research programs of the faculty mentor. URP scholars will have opportunities to present at local, regional and possibly national meetings.

• Applicants must be University of Minnesota - Twin Cities undergraduate students who are from an under-represented population.
• Stipend $424/week for a full-time 10-12 week summer experience with a competitive option to continue paid research during the academic year.
• Up to $1,000 for travel funds to a national meeting within the year following the training program to present research for outstanding projects.
• Applications due February 15, 2012, with decisions made by March 1, 2012 - start date Summer 2012.
• Up to 10 students will be selected and paired with a faculty mentor for this prestigious program.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact Megan Hoffman, Administrative Director for the Center for Health Equity, at hoff0511@umn.edu or 612-626-4120.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

index.jpg

A few thoughts on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day from Andrew Williams, director of the MLK Program:

I've spent the morning of our MLK holiday reading and reflecting on Grace Lee Boggs' new book The Next American Revolution. She emphasizes that any of us committed to creating a more just and equitable society must continue to grapple with the full complexity and implications of the life, work, and ideas of MLK. Among her quotes of King is this one, "We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-oriented" society. When machines, computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered." Thank you MLK!

I wish you a day of hope, reflection and renewed courage to continue to act each day in the spirit of Dr. King.
