Freshman students through seniors and graduate students are invited to learn about these federally funded scholarships for intensive summer study abroad in the Critical Need languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu. US citizens age 18 and over in any major may apply. Some institutes have language prerequisities but many are open to beginners. The scholarship covers all costs for participating in these exceptional language institutes abroad. The U of M Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program is now accepting applications for summer 2013. The application deadline is February 4, 2013.
McNair Program at-a-glance
The goal of McNair Scholars is to give undergraduate students intensive, faculty-driven research experiences and prepare students for entry into and success in graduate school.
McNair Scholars program is a 10 week summer research program where students will:
--Receive a $ 3000.00 stipend throughout the summer
--Be paired up with a professor to work on their research (research can take place with faculty in any academic discipline/college--check out our alumni roster)
--Learn how to develop a quality research paper
--Receive help with the application process (i.e. identify graduate programs, write a personal statement, and create a curriculum vita)
--Present their research at poster sessions held here at the U of M
--Most importantly, develop a great relationship with a professor that is invaluable in terms of getting admitted into graduate school
Qualifications:
First generation college student and low income, or from an underrepresented group, and a GPA of 2.75 and above. You must be a full time sophomore or junior and a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. Students with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) focus are strongly encouraged to apply to the McNair Scholars Program, as are student veterans.

Apply to be a History Day Mentor to students in Minneapolis/St. Paul public schools!
History Day is an interdisciplinary research project for students in grades 6-12. History Day teaches students to conduct in-depth research, use primary and secondary sources, analyze and synthesize information, and write about as well as present historical content. By working in close collaboration with participating schools in the Minneapolis/St. Paul public school system, History Day mentors will work directly with students and offer them guidance as they complete their History Day projects. UMN students who participate as History Day Mentors will complete this work in Spring 2013 and receive a stipend for their efforts.
The deadline to apply to be a History Day Mentor is October 15. Students of diverse backgrounds and students with foreign language skills are especially encouraged to apply.

The Community Service-Learning Center (CSLC), along with its partner office of Off-Campus Study, coordinates University-wide resources for community service-learning and domestic off-campus study programs. We have a project-oriented and team management approach to accomplishing our work.
The Community Service-Learning portion of the office (1) provides support to departments and faculty teaching courses throughout the Twin Cities campus with community-based learning components; (2) cultivates and maintains partnerships with local community organizations; (3) supports co-curricular community-based learning by advising students on community involvement opportunities and provides opportunities for student leadership; (4) designs and implements a pre-entry orientation and training curriculum for students involved in service-learning courses and in co-curricular programs and (5) coordinates the Community Engagement Scholars Program (CESP) which provides official University recognition for students who make a serious commitment to the greater community. THE JOB: The City of Minneapolis Office of Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) is looking for a full-time, temporary intern. The position is for up to six months starting in early January 2013.
