ID 3564 -- Environment and Agriculture: Sustainable Food Systems
-May-Term (May 15th to June 9th, 2013)
-4 credits (plus optional 2 credit internship...ID 3565)

This field-based course provides a comprehensive overview of the Minnesota food system. Students learn from local activists, farmers, and policy makers, while visiting community supported agriculture (CSA) farms, meat-packing plants, creamery operations, and industrial farms. The course provides a strong theoretical and practical background which enables students to analyze the environmental, economic, political, social and cultural issues that define modern farming. -16 credits (full-time, off-campus, semester program)
-fulfills these LEs: Biological Science with Lab core, Social Sciences core, Civic Life and Ethics theme, Environment theme
The Environmental Sustainability program is experiential, combining academic classroom work with hands-on experience in the community through internships. In the semester-long ES program, you learn about all aspects of environmental sustainability, from farming and food to environmental justice, conservation, climate change, and energy. You'll find that this environmental movement goes beyond recycling and shopping at the co-op to what you can do now as a student to make real change! Throughout the semester we take various trips around greater Minnesota and learn by seeing and doing from real world people. These programs are offered by HECUA, the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs, a non-profit organization based in St. Paul, MN that offers unique experiential education programs both domestically and abroad. These programs focus on issues affecting our local and global communities. At the U of M, they are offered in partnership with the Community Service-Learning Center. The University Student Legal Services, Mock Trial Association, CLA Career Services and the Pre-Law Society are proud to present the 15th Annual Careers in Law Forum.

The event will be located in the Willey Hall Atrium from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 6th. No registration required.

This year's participants include more than 50 exhibitors from a number of prominent government agencies, nonprofits, criminal justice organizations, several political offices, and a dozen law schools. Learn first hand about graduate school options, related volunteer and internship experiences, and professions in the local legal community. This event is not just for those considering law school- it features opportunities for a variety of academic disciplines in law-related fields. New this year, giveaways and treats will be offered throughout the event. Please join us for the Careers in Law Forum- It's all here!

Summer Internship Opportunity with Kohl's

MLK student Carolina Margaria asked us to pass along this opportunity to become a Store Management Intern with Kohl's this summer. Carolina says, "I did the internship last summer and it was a great experience, it taught me a lot about leadership and what it takes to run a business. I think this is a great opportunity for CLA majors that are interested in business or working with people. Kohl's accepts all majors and they are really looking for students that love to work with people in a fast paced environment."

Attend the information session next Wednesday, March 6th, from 6 pm-8 pm in 518/520 STSS to learn more. Interested students may also apply for an on-campus interview for this position through GoldPASS.

The Business Association of Multicultural Students (BAM) is hosting a Platinum Fast Track event this Thursday. Looking to learn more about and network with BAM's corporate sponsors in a casual setting? This is a great opportunity to participate in while networking with sponsors. The event will be a round robin style setting, in which members will rotate from table to table with presentations on various professional development themes. The event is open to all members and non-members, so be sure to arrive at 5pm on Thursday, February 7th at the Carlson Private Dining Room to secure a spot.

International UROP Scholarship Information Session

The International Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROP) Scholarship is designed to promote learning abroad opportunities to undergraduate students by providing critical funding to students enrolled in select credit-bearing learning abroad programs involving a research project. The learning abroad program must be a semester or academic year in length involving a minimum of 100 hours dedicated to research that occurs onsite.
