Health and Biodiversity (VPM 2850)
Tuesdays 1:55 - 3:50 (3 credit), St Paul Campus, 64 BioSci

The Environment LE Theme & Writing Intensive

How does the health of the environment affect the health of animals and humans? What role does biodiversity play in this equation?

This course explores the inextricable linkages between biodiversity, the health of the environment, and the health of humans and animals. We explore these relationships, threats to the delicate balance between them, and potential solutions for sustainable global & ecosystem health.

This course will be delivered in an interactive environment and is largely based upon individual/group active learning processes and case study evaluation. It is available to all undergraduates interested in a future career in most health professions including veterinary medicine, public health, medicine, nursing, environmental health and more! Understanding the big picture of health will make you a more effective problem-solver!

Course Instructors: Dominic Travis DVM, MS (Datravis@umn.edu), Meggan Craft PhD (craft@umn.edu)

Dr. Travis was previously Vice President of Conservation and Science at the Lincoln Park Zoo and has spent the vast amount of his professional life teaching and conducting ecosystem health research around the world. He is very involved in studying the risk of disease spread between non-human primates and people, such as the evolution of HIV from its precursor in chimpanzees and monkeys (SIV). Dr. Craft is an ecologist and has spent extensive time in Africa studying disease ecology issues such as canine distemper and rabies virus in carnivores of the Serengeti and now leads a project aimed at understanding the impact of anthrax on hippos, cattle and humans in Uganda. Both instructors bring a wealth of experience and passion relating to problems affecting the health and biodiversity of animals, humans and the environment.

The Minnesota International Center is sponsoring a presentation by world-renowned diplomat and humanitarian, Lloyd Axworthy, on May 21st at Cowles Auditorium on the U's West Bank. They are offering complimentary passes to any interested MLK students and their guests. Interested students should email Sean Donovan at mic@umn.edu.

Humanitarian Intervention
WHEN: Tuesday, May 21; registration 3:30 P; program 4:00 - 5:30 P
WHERE: Cowles Auditorium, Humphrey School of Public Affairs, 301 19th Avenue S, Minneapolis
COST: MIC members, students and cosponsors $5; Non-members $15
Advance registration requested

Cosponsors: Advocates for Human Rights;
Center for Victims of Torture; Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change; Nonviolent Peaceforce; University of Minnesota Human Rights Program; World without Genocide

The U.S. government is frequently called upon with requests for humanitarian intervention by foreign governments, the international NGO community, and various other groups. As such, many are calling for the U.S. to adopt a "responsibility to protect" doctrine. "R2P", as it has come to be known, raises serious questions about intervention on strictly humanitarian grounds: Is it legal? What are the ethics of using military force in response to human right violations? When and who should intervene? And finally, is it even effective?

On May 21, join the Minnesota International Center for a discussion attempting to answer some of these questions with one of the world's leading experts on humanitarian intervention, Dr. Lloyd Axworthy.

Speaker Biography
Dr. Axworthy's political career in Canada spanned 27 years, six of which he served in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly and over two decades in the Federal Parliament. He has held several Cabinet positions, including a four year tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs during which he helped to establish the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty and the International Criminal Court in 1998. Upon leaving public office, Dr. Axworthy served as Director and CEO of the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia before his appointment as The University of Winnipeg's President and Vice-Chancellor in 2004. Football and American Cultural Identity,1:25 P.M. - 05:30 P.M. , M,Tu,W,Th (05/28/2013 - 06/14/2013)

This course will explore the significance of varsity football--from small town high schools to collegiate traditions-- as a continuing narrative of communal identity and ritual. We will read texts that explore football, such as Wilson's "Fences" and Bissinger's Friday Night Lights, and watch film adaptations and footage of the sport. We will consider football as a host of narratives: of race, gender, dis/ability, and the body; of sport, premised on larger American historical politics and ideals, defined by both grit and imperial gain; of the larger socio-economic shifts mirrored in its evolution.
