NSF Graduate Research Fellowships
For research-based PhDs in the social sciences, sciences, engineering, mathematics, and history & philosophy of science beginning fall 2014 or later

AHS 2300: Orientation to Clinical Research
This course is intended for pre-health students interested in clinical research and careers in the health professions. This seminar introduces pre-health students to the field of clinical research, ethical conduct and professionalism, and clinical research methods pertinent to dentistry, medicine, public health, pharmacy, and nursing.

In addition to biweekly lectures, students will participate in a supervised field experience in which they observe clinical research practices. This course prepares students to begin a University Research Opportunities Program (UROP) grant in clinical research. Enrollment in this course is limited.

Course Objectives
By the end of the semester, students will have:

  • Defined clinical research and its core components;
  • Identified ethical issues inherent in research in humans;
  • Identified best practices in clinical research methodology and data collection;
  • Understood the structure and roles of the clinical research team;
  • Identified aspects of professional and ethical components related to patient/subject interactions;
  • Participated in an observational field experience; and,
  • Identified pertinent University and Academic Health Center resources.

    Prerequisites for Fall 2013
    Enrollment in this course is limited. Prerequisite requirements include:

  • Instructor Permission
  • Status as a sophomore or second year student in Fall 2013 (students with extra credits due to PSEO or AP are eligible)
  • Health-related experience through volunteering, shadowing, interning, or working
  • Interest in research

    The International Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROP) Scholarship is designed to promote learning abroad opportunities to undergraduate students by providing critical funding to students enrolled in select credit-bearing learning abroad programs involving a research project. The learning abroad program must be a semester or academic year in length involving a minimum of 100 hours dedicated to research that occurs onsite.
