Leaders assume new roles

Brian Herman, Ph.D. Brian Herman, Ph.D., an internationally recognized expert in cellular and structural biology, joined the University as vice president for research in January. The position oversees all aspects of research at the University’s five campuses. According to a recent National Science Foundation survey, the University had $786 million in research and development expenditures (a 6 percent increase over the previous year) and retained its eighth-place ranking among public research universities.


Dimple Patel Dimple Patel, currently director of admissions for the University of Colorado School of Medicine, has been named associate dean of admissions for the University of Minnesota Medical School, effective May 13. Patel is completing her Ph.D. in higher education leadership at Colorado State University.


Jakub Tolar, M.D., Ph.D. Pediatric blood and marrow transplant physician Jakub Tolar, M.D., Ph.D., became director of the University’s Stem Cell Institute in January. Tolar, who joined the University in 2005, investigates the use of cellular therapies and hematopoietic stem cell transplant to treat a number of genetic conditions. He aims to make stem cell transplants safer and more effective for repairing damaged tissue.


Marc Jenkins, Ph.D. Marc Jenkins, Ph.D., a Distinguished McKnight University Professor from the Department of Microbiology, was appointed director of the University’s Center for Immunology, a three-year appointment. Jenkins has been part of the 60-member center since it was founded in 1995 and was serving as its associate director.


Debra DeBruin, Ph.D. Debra DeBruin, Ph.D., who studies the ethics of research, has accepted a three-year appointment as director of the Center for Bioethics. The longtime University faculty member most recently served as the center’s co-interim director.
