Since Congress launched the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) in 1997, the number of uninsured children in this country has declined by more than 20 percent, according to a new study from the State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC).
The survey finds that 8 million U.S. children are without health insurance, down from 10 million in the late 1980s. The researchers credit SCHIP, which uses a mix of state and federal dollars to provide coverage for children in families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private insurance.
