The Office for Equity and Diversity at the University of Minnesota is proud to sponsor the Multicultural Kickoff, which helps first-year students make a successful transition to college by building community and identifying academic and cultural supports on campus. It provides an opportunity for you to meet students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

Multicultural Kickoff begins Tuesday morning August 28 and concludes Wednesday before Welcome Week begins.

Multicultural Kickoff offers a unique opportunity to:

* Connect with other new students and returning students and develop new friendships
* Build relationships with multicultural students, staff, and faculty
* Learn about faculty expectations in the classroom
* Learn about programs and services on campus that will make you successful

Health Care Career Camp Coming June 13-15, 2012

Central Minnesota Area Health Education Center Camps to Careers in Healthcare will be held on the University of Minnesota-Morris campus June 13-15, 2012.

This is an exciting opportunity for 2012-13 school year 10th - 12th grade students to explore and prepare for exciting, high-wage, high-demand careers in the health care field. Students can 'try on' careers through interactive, hands-on projects led by a variety of health care provider experts. Participants will also receive resources and guidance to take the next steps in their career development.

In addition, students will stay on campus for the two nights of camp, and get that "university" experience. Cost is $100 per participant which includes dorm room, meals, and activities. The cost for this camp is subsidized by Central Minnesota Area Health Education Center. Students are required to arrange transportation to and from camp.

Registration:
Space is limited. Priority registration deadline is May 15, 2012. Applications will be accepted beyond this date if space is still available.

Summer Public Health Institute registration opens today for enrolled University of Minnesota students.

The University of Minnesota 11th annual Public Health Institute offers courses for everyone practicing in or studying public health or fields related to public health.

The Public Health Institute includes a collection of fast-paced and interactive courses in nine public health areas with an emphasis on theory-to-practice, with opportunities for field trips, case studies, hands-on labs, and simulations.

The courses are available May 21-June 8, 2012.

End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) is a national initiative to improve end-of-life education to healthcare providers, which translates into excellent care to patients and their families. This training conference is targeted for health providers who are interested in learning more about Palliative Care and end-of-life patient care, including those working in: medical, oncology, intensive care, home care/hospice and skilled nursing units or facilities.

Following the program, the participant will be able to:

Describe the philosophy and principles of hospice and palliative care that can be integrated across settings to affect quality care at the end-of-life.

Discuss aspects of assessing physiological, psychological, spiritual, and social domains of quality of life for patients and families facing a life-threatening illness or event.

Describe pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies used to relieve pain.

Discuss the role of the nurse involved with pain assessment and management at end-of-life.

Identify common symptoms associated with end-of-life processes and potential causes for these symptoms.

Describe interventions that can prevent or diminish symptoms at end-of-life.

Discuss ethical issues and dilemmas that may arise in end-of-life/palliative care.

Identify dimensions of culture and the influence of culture on palliative care for patients across the life span.

Describe important factors in communicating bad news. Indentify three factors that influence communication in the palliative care setting.

Define loss, mourning, grief and bereavement. Provide three interventions that may be appropriate to facilitate grief.

Define personal death awareness and cumulative loss associated with professional care giving.

Assess physical, psychological, social and spiritual care needs and interventions

In the last 30 years since the first diagnosed cases of HIV/AIDS, the epidemic has changed and older adults are at greater risk than ever. On Wednesday, January 25th, the Administration on Aging (AoA) will hold a webinar on HIV/AIDS and aging to explore community programs and resources associated with positive aging and prevention.

The Administration on Aging (AoA) is the Federal agency responsible for advancing the concerns and interests of older people and their caregivers. AoA is part of the Department of Health and Human Services and is headed by the Assistant Secretary for Aging.

The MN AHEC Network works with the MN Area Geriatric Education Center, a partner HRSA program, to promote education for health professionals on geriatric care.
