July 2012 Archives

On June 20, Rebecca (Beki) Saito was one of the opening plenary speakers at the 14th Annual Urban Initiatives Conference presented by UW Milwaukee's Center for Urban Initiatives and Research.  The theme of this year's conference was "Youth/Adult Partnerships:  Engaging youth in community transformation."  In this week's Youth Development Insight, Beki blogs about the conference and its focus on youth engagement as a philosophy and strategy for community change.

Samantha Grant's blog in April's Youth Development Insight triggered a request from The Family Involvement Network of Educators (FINE), part of The Harvard Family Research Project, asking Samantha to write an article for their FINE Newsletter.  Read Samantha's article, "Raising Expectations for Out-of-School Time" in the June issue of the FINE Newsletter: Family--Afterschool Partnerships for Learning.

The Minnesota Department of Health's STD and HIV Section is interested in learning about the sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention education efforts of youth-serving agencies in Minnesota. The results of this survey will help us better understand what is currently being provided and help us focus our technical assistance in the future. The survey should take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Click here https://survey.vovici.com/se.ashx?s=56206EE3519C589F to take the survey. Please feel free to forward this email to other youth-serving staff within your agency and/or at other agencies. The survey end date is: May 25, 2012 so we appreciate your help before then!

Science Museum of Minnesota's 1st annual Youth Science Day Thursday July 12, 1-4pm

We will be celebrating our community's youth (ages 13-18) and their passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and the arts.

This is a great opportunity for youth you work with to engage other youth in the Twin Cities to learn and grow together, as event visitors or presenters! Our theme this year is 'Your Vehicle for STEM Exploration - Take the Wheel!' as this event is a place for the youth of our community to find resources together and figure out how they want to use STEM to better their community.

As colleagues who also work to support the youth in our community, we'd like to invite you to attend, bring youth from your programs (as visitors or presenters!), spread the word, and utilize the event to build partnerships.

Check out www.smm.org/youthscienceday for info on the free bus transportation that is available, the buy 1 get 4 tickets free deal, event activities, to sign up to present, and more!
