Analysis: Superdome power outage

In Fox New's article, "Power Outage delays Superbowl for a half hour," the author begins with a lead that combines all the right news elements for a soft-news lead.
The lead under any football headline does not necessarily need to be straightforward because it is not considered to be "hard-news", yet the lead for Fox News' report of the Suberbowl power outage fulfills the requirements of a classic and informative lead. In the lead are the five identified W's: who (TV announcers, Superbowl players, fans, and officials), what (Superbowl delay), when (Sunday night), where (Superdome), and why (power outage). In this lead, the "what" is the information that the rest of the lead and news story is centered around. The Superbowl delay is the most detailed part of the lead, as the author includes that it was a 34-minute delay that was the result of a power outage. "Silencing TV announcers" was the most general part of the lead that was later expanded on in the news story. I think the author chose to write the lead in this way to highlight the delay that the power outage caused as the "news" or "controversy" that always backs up a good report.

Kate: You are doing a good job with the entries. Just be aware that you can't leave them mostly for Sunday. You won't get full points of you do. So spread them through the week as best you can. GG
