Tech Services Ten Cents: July 2009
We are usually into the "dog days" of summer by now, that sweltering time of year named for the "dog star." But this July's temperatures might be described as the bear days of summer, as in polar bear. However the stars have aligned this month, Technical Services staff have been working on a constellation of activities. They were: Starring in publishing... Hunting the ice... Moving to new territory... Stalking new roles...

Wilson Fire Alarm on August 4
Wilson Library had a fire alarm on Tuesday. The building was evacuated quickly and some staff used the emergency exits. Please remember when the fire alarm goes off to leave by the closest exit, not by the front door. If your building has a public address system, make sure you clearly understand any follow up messages before staying or returning to the building. Emergency personal will need a clear path to the door, so please step away from the building for your safety. Thank you.

Staff Tidings and Kudos
A Gift from the Reference Desk
Recently, Bernadette Corley Troge shared the following story about the positive impact library staff had on a library user: A friend and neighbor, a very busy Minneapolis Public teacher, who herself has run history day for her school, had nothing but wonderful things to say about the University Libraries and how her daughter was treated when she came to do research in Wilson Library. Her daughter is extremely shy, but her Mom told Sophie that she'd have to ask all the questions and find the information before they set out for Wilson Library.
Sophie had a hard time going to the desk, but just bloomed and connected, under Denny Lien's instruction at the reference desk. You never know how you can affect people but it apparently was a turning point for Sophie. She gained a bit of confidence and went on to do great in the program. Her Mom just raved over the History Day Program at the U and the University Library staff. Link to more information and a picture of Sophie and her award at the Carnegie Institution, Department of terrestrial Magnetism site: http://www.dtm.ciw.edu/index.php?start=15
Thanks to Denny and all who work every day to delivery exceptional reference assistance and instruction to library users.
