Collection Preservation Planning Initiated
To assist the Libraries in planning for collection preservation and conservation, a consultant and planning task force have been charged to develop a framework to guide decisions and program investments. Sam Demas, currently College Librarian at Carleton College, previously head of Collection Development & Preservation at Cornell's Mann Library, will serve as a consultant through January 2010, working with a task force to include Charles Spetland (convener), Amy Boemer, Linda Greve, Kris kiesling, Scott Marsalis, and Arvid Nelsen.
The task force is charged to assess issues of preservation and conservation in the context of growing digital resources and collaborative collection management among libraries. The proposed framework will identify priorities, scope the nature and structure of a preservation/conservation program, outline direction for cooperative effort, and assess the University of Minnesota's role in state/regional/national efforts. The task force will also engage relevant staff throughout the Libraries to inform its recommendations.
The activity of the task force will be shared through the Libraries' staff wiki.

Drupal Implementation for Main Libraries Web Site
On August 10, the Libraries main web site (http://www.lib.umn.edu ) was migrated to the Drupal Web Content Management System and on to a new systems architecture installed across two Office of Information Technology (OIT) data centers. Sub-sites (e.g., http://wilson.lib.umn.edu , http://efw.lib.umn.edu , etc.) were not migrated in this first phase of the Drupal migration project. Please contact Shane Nackerud or Cody Hanson for more information.
Computer Installations
West Zone Computer Support techs and student workers have worked at an intense pace deploying new desktop computers. Staff started out with the goal of installing 72 units and has only a few units to complete. Please contact Mike Sutliff for more information and this page for the list of deployments: https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/IT/CompReplace .
Aleph Accounts
Library Enterprise Operations (LEO) has recently completed a large project to eliminate most Aleph shared accounts and to create new accounts for all individual staff members previously using a shared account. This policy change was enacted to ensure compliance with overall university security policies regarding data privacy and data integrity. As a result of this work, the total number of active Aleph accounts has more than doubled, with a total now of over 840. A special thanks goes to Connie Hendrick (TC) and Darlene Morris (UMD) for their hard work on this project.
UniPrint Upgrade
In August, the new UniPrint server was installed and is running flawlessly. Print stations are being upgraded as this goes to press and new printers will be arriving shortly. Other enhancements to the service are being evaluated. Please contact Mike Sutliff or Peter Weinhold for more information regarding the technology aspects of these UniPrint updates.
E-Reserves Server and Software Upgrade
On August 10, Computer Support worked with Reserves staff and Sirsi/Dynix to upgrade the E-Reserves system to Docutek ERes v5.6 on new server and storage hardware.
Disaster Recovery Planning for SFX
On August 14, LEO and OIT staff successfully completed the final step in the Disaster Recovery (DR) Planning process for the SFX (Find It) application. The work completed by the SFX DR team ensures that we will be able to quickly switch to an alternate environment in case of an emergency with our production environment. The scope of this project includes the SFX systems that LEO supports for all four campuses plus nine consortial customers.
Media Repository
The alpha version of the Libraries new Media Repository supports the delivery of rich media - audio and video - content in addition to traditional still images, was released on August 3. Over 20,000 images and other objects have been loaded into this alpha version (http://chaucer.lib.umn.edu/ ). This system uses the open source Fedora digital object management system, along with Apache Solr for indexing and search, and Drupal for the web interface. Additionally, authenticated users (x.500) may sign in and upload content to this site. Please contact Jason Roy for more information.
