Digital Reference Consolidation Work Underway
The Digital Reference Consolidation group was announced several weeks ago and, since that time, the Health Sciences Libraries have joined the group, adding even more support for the project. The group has met several times, including an initial brainstorming session that guided our next steps. We have discussed a wide range of topics including, explicit guidelines and expectations for managing reference services, guidelines for referrals, staffing models, communication planning, and more.
For additional information about the project, visit the wiki site at: https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/SSPP/Digrefconsolidation . Feel free to contact any team member with questions.

Open Google Calendars
You'll need to take a few steps in order to provide read access to your calendar now that you've migrated to Google. Remember that it is an expectation within the University Libraries that you maintain an open calendar - and, just like when using UMCal, you can make individual meetings private when that's needed.
How to open your Google Calendar for viewing within the University community in five easy steps:
1. Open your Google Calendar
2. In the lefthand sidebar under "My calendars", click on settings
3. Click on "Shared: Edit Settings"
4. Check the box that reads "Share this calendar with everyone in the organization University of Minnesota" and select "See all event details"
5. Click "Save"
More complete instructions, along with images, are available on the Wiki at: https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/Google/SetUpReadAccessToYourGCal . If you have questions about how to change this setting, please contact autosys@umn.edu or a Google expert in your area.

Vacation, Sick, and Seniority Accrual Impacts During Furlough Days
(Civil Service and Union-represented Employees)
https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/HR/HomePage
The University has reached agreement with all of its union groups, with the exception of Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS), regarding the three day mandatory furloughs for Fiscal Year 2011. The agreements, including those with all three AFSCME Units, and the Teamsters, contained the following information (please note that these terms also apply to Civil Service employees).
Furlough days (voluntary and mandatory) will not impact an employee's vacation, sick leave, and seniority accrual. Progression on the vacation accrual schedule will not be impacted by furlough days. The furlough days also will not impact service credit hours for purposes of determining eligibility for leave of absences including FMLA and parental leave.

Fair use is a vital part of copyright law for scholars, researchers, artists, and, in fact, anyone who communicates with anyone else. Quotation, criticism, review, collage, parody - all involve aspects of fair use - yet many people have a limited or lopsided understanding of how fair use really works. In this workshop, we'll identify situations where fair use arises, both in and outside of the academic realm. We'll also develop our understanding of the factors that determine whether a use is "fair" and practice applying these concepts with real-world examples. Expect to think hard, debate a little, and have some fun.
