Project to Expand Capacity for Collections Repair
In early August, Sue Hallgren, Charles Spetland, and Peggy Johnson charged a small group to advance recommendations made in "Enduring Access to University of Minnesota Libraries Collections: A Preservation Planning Framework for a Digital Age," prepared by Sam Demas, aimed to expand the University Libraries' capacity for treatment of damaged material from the circulating collections. Specifically, the work group was asked to:
- Make recommendations for space for repair shops
- Collect costs for equipment and supplies needed
- Identify treatment options within our current guidelines and practices
- Find onsite training from an external source
- Recommend staff to receive initial training.
The work group, Amy Boemer (chair), Karl Isely, Scott Marsalis, Laurie Jedamus, and Christopher Herzberg, submitted their comprehensive report September 1, 2010. You can find the report at: https://netfiles.umn.edu/xythoswfs/webui/_xy-17500901_1 . The sponsors accepted the recommendations in principle and work has moved forward in two areas. First, a trainer from the Northeast Document Conservation Center delivered a two-day workshop, hosted at the University Bindery, in early November 2010. This was attended by Christine Aho, Jenna Bluhm, Amy Boemer, Sue Delzer, Tim Engelstad, Marc Flechsig, Amy Gmur, Christopher Herzberg, Karl Isely, Laurie Jedamus, Wendy Kieser, Jean Magnuson, and Dana Peterson.
To best understand what the repair hubs need and how they will be used, we decided to create a pilot repair hub in Magrath Library to test the recommendations for layout, equipment, and supplies. Work is underway to create this hub in the former Magrath Technical Services space, which is adjacent to a sink. Other staff who attended the training will be able to try out the site and determined how it should be replicated in additional locations across the Libraries. We are tentatively planning to create additional repair hubs in the Bio-Medical Library, Walter Library, and Wilson Library.
If you have comments or questions about the report, recommendations, and plans to implement them, contact Amy Boemer, Sue Hallgren, Charles Spetland, or Peggy Johnson.

Uniprint Unavailable During Windows 7 Upgrade
Uniprint will be unavailable January 3 through January 7, 2011. We will be upgrading the Pharos software so that it will be compatible with Windows 7. Upgrading the software will require our IT staff to visit each public workstation. Once the workstation has been updated, printing will be available at that terminal. Questions? Please contact Amy Boemer at a-boem@umn.edu .

Changes at Health Sciences Libraries
In the context of continuous assessment of Health Sciences Libraries operations, we have made two staff reassignments within existing job classifications to meet needs in both the Veterinary Medical Library and the BioMedical Library. Effective November 30, 2010, David Lenander, long-time Library Manager in Public Services at the BioMedical Library moved to the Veterinary Medicine Library to be Library Manager, supervising Lisa Berg and reporting to André Nault. Laura Krueger, LA-3, moved from the Veterinary Medicine Library to the BioMedical Library Technical Services where she reports to Nicole Theis-Mahon. The goal of the repositioning is to enhance synergies between the two libraries, with consideration of cross-training between Veterinary Medicine and BioMedical students and staff. The move takes advantage of David's experience in managing students and staffing a service desk at the BioMedical Library, as well as his role as a "Frontline Tech". Laura's experience in technical processing, public service, and teaching will be a valuable resource at the BioMedical Library, from where she will continue to coordinate Veterinary Medicine technical processing. Other adjustments will be made in each of the affected departments over time, as needed. Thanks to all the staff and their supervisors who made this happen over the past several months.

The University of Minnesota Libraries participated in a self reflective study conducted by the University of Minnesota Institute for Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy (IDEA). The self study group was composed of faculty and staff commissioned through an application process in the Spring of 2009 by Associate Vice Provost Louis Mendoze, Director of IDEA, which was then still in its formative state. IDEA's goal is to promote and support scholars from the University of Minnesota as they collaborate in innovative and groundbreaking ways across disciplines, departments, colleges, campuses, and with local communities. This group analyzed issues related to leadership, campus climate, the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, staff and students, the uses and reliability of data collection and metrics on diversity, accountability and evaluation measures, and teaching, research, and support services that advance diversity and equity at the University of Minnesota. The end result was a document titled, ''Equity and Diversity at the University of Minnesota: Reflections on Meaningful Change." Please join the Diversity Outreach Collaborative in discussing this document.

Room 310, Walter Library
SMART Sync has been installed in Wilson Library room S30C, Walter Library room 310, the Magrath Library Instruction Lab, and will be installed in the "pit" in the Biomedical Library. This software gives you, the instructor, many options for how you can use the computers in the lab, for example, broadcast a demo on the instructor's computer to all computers (e.g. help the back row see) or send out a document or URL to all computers (e.g. worksheet, quiz or survey). More advanced uses include projecting a student's computer on the front screen (e.g. good search or strange error message), polling students (e.g. quiz, etc.), and more. Come to this session to learn more and get hands-on practice with this software. Kristen Mastel has developed two guides, basic and advanced, which are available in the Information Literacy Toolkit at: http://www.delicious.com/UMIL/ .

We have the tools for you: UM Connect and Camtasia Relay. These tools, free to University staff, can expand the reach of your meetings and training sessions. The first part of this session will compare and contrast these tools and focus on why you would use one over the other. During the second part of the session, we will break off into two groups for a more in-depth and hands on look at the tool that seems most useful to you.
