Google Scanning Project Update
January brings us good news for the Google scanning project.  Google has restored our shipment volume back to 44 carts per month, beginning with the January shipment.  Pulling will begin in the Entomology, Fisheries, and Wildlife (EFW) library in January for the February shipment to Google.  EFW library materials to be scanned by Google include the Beekeeping collection of distinction and represent UMN's first collection of distinction to be scanned.  Thanks to Linda Eells, Madonna Smith, and Philip Herold, who have welcomed the Google team to EFW and are assisting in project preparations and strategies there.  In addition to EFW, the project team continues to pull from the Wilson Library Annex (22 trucks each month) and MLAC (11 trucks each month).

Public Workstation Access Wilson Pilot Begins
The Public Workstation Access Implementation group has worked for many months to develop procedures that balance the need to comply with the new University Securing Private Data policy requirements with the access needs of our primary users and guests.  After many meetings with staff and other stakeholders, we are pleased to inform you that Computer Support and public services (AP and IADS) are ready to begin.  We will use a staged implementation approach because of the many inter-connected business and technical requirements, including new software installation and testing, public workstation desktop reimaging, database creation and patron record loading, public notification, and staff software training.  We anticipate running the pilot through spring semester, during which time we will closely monitor activity and evaluate our various business and technical rules, seeking areas of improvement, as we then move forward with a goal of systemwide implementation.

Here's what to expect in Wilson Library this next week:
- Software installation, testing and reimaging of public workstations with the CybraryN Patron Authentication software.  Reimaging is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 10, 2011.
- Preloading and testing of Friends of the Libraries (at the borrower's level) and Special Privilege records into the patron manager database.  This step reduces front line staff work related to this new benefit feature.
- The existing guest login ( "libguest") will continue to work on computers with the old login image.  Once a workstation is reimaged, a new guest account is required (the "libguest" username will no longer work).  Wilson desk staff have received the new "ul-pa-guest" login to be used on the reimaged machines.
- Staff will continue to log users in using "ul-pa-guest" until we have completed all software testing and baseline staff training.  We anticipate having all requirements in place by the start of the new semester at which time this password will be deactivated and we will begin registering guest users and issuing Public Workstation Access cards.
- Starting this Monday morning, IADS and AP staff in Wilson will inform individuals requesting guest login of the upcoming change to individual account registration and provide them a printed handout detailing the new procedures.  Service desks have received copies of this and other documents (Staff and Guest FAQs) for public distribution.
- In addition, signage will be placed near computer workstations and at the Wilson Library entrances informing guests of upcoming changes.  Guests will be directed to Wilson Reference, Circulation, or Basement Exit services desks for more help.
- Software training sessions for public service point managers/supervisors (no registration necessary) takes place on Wednesday January 12, 2011, 9.30 am to 10.30 am and Friday, January 14, 2011, 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, both in room S30B, Wilson Library.
- Copies of all resource documents can be found on the Implementation wiki site at: https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/AP/PublicWorkstationImplementationStaffTraining .

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.  Note that Mike Sutliff will lead the reimaging effort and is available as the technical contact for the next few weeks during Michael Winters absence.

Tech Services Ten Cents
December was one snowstorm after another, the snowiest December in the Twin Cities in modern times.  During this snowy December, the shortest work month of the year, with short days and long nights, TS staff dug into their work with the same determination that they used to shovel their way through the snow outside.  They were: Delving into cataloging... Mining the code... Piling up accomplishments... Drifting into the holidays...
