HathiTrust Update
HathiTrust has just released an upgrade to the pageturner functionality.  The enhancements were collaboratively developed by the California Digital Library and University of Michigan, and include:
- New views, allowing scrolling through volumes, flipping pages similar to a physical book, and viewing thumbnail images of all pages in a volume
- Reorganized and streamlined interface, including prominent display of copyright status and re-positioning of navigation features
- Quick-copy links for individual pages, in addition to permanent links for volumes
- Improved user experience, including progress bar for full-PDF downloads

Kerlan Project Hits Milestone
Technical Services and Children's Literature Research Center (CLRC) staff celebrated 20,000 books cataloged for the Kerlan Collection cataloging project, which began in September 2008.  The current project team includes Christine DeZelar-Tiedman, Emilie Quast, Linda Berger, Connie Anderson, Nicole Bretall, Zohra Munshi, Ken Page, and Li Zhu, with Karen Nelson Hoyle, Meredith Gillies, and the CLRC student and volunteer staff, adding essential support in funding and logistics.  The project continues, with a projected total of 40,000 books, once the project is completed.

Libraries to U Service Ending July 1, 2011
Effective July 1, 2011, the Libraries will cease our Libraries to U (LTU) service, which provides copies of articles to affiliated users for a fee.  Use of this services has declined more that 65% between FY05 and FY10, and, despite raising the charge per article, has required a subsidy.  We project fewer than 500 requests in FY11.  The increasing availability of e-journal content, including backfiles, is the primary reason for the decline.  With a lengthened loan period for bound journals, users will be able to request these materials not available electronically through the Get It service.  We are very fortunate that the portion of Libraries staff person's time that has been devoted to LTU is being reassigned to InfoNow to support the work of that service.  Letters will be sent to LTU users later this spring informing them of this change and explaining options.  Please contact Sue Hallgren via email at: s-hall@umn.edu or Peggy Johnson via email at: m-john@umn.edu if you have questions.

UMedia Archive Upgrade

Beginning Monday, May 16, 2011, the UMedia Archive will begin a major upgrade to the system.  This upgrade has a number of enhancements, including support for complex objects (e.g. books, plats, archival materials).  It is expected to take approximately five to seven days to complete the upgrade process.  During that period, users will still be able to search and discover items already in the online collections - however, they will not be able to upload new content to the system.  Once complete, users may notice a few new features.
- A submission agreement has been added to the upload process.  This agreement helps to ensure that submitters are only uploading items for which they have the proper rights and/or permissions.
- Initial uploads from our two major archival scanning projects, the American Social Health Association and the Green Revolution, will be added to UMedia Archive.

Beth Kaplan Elected to Society of American Archivists (SAA) Council
Beth Kaplan has been elected to a three year term on the SAA Council, the governing body of the Society of American Archivists.
 
Beth is also co-author of "The Green Revolution Digitization Project at the University of Minnesota: A Collaborative Model of Support for Preservation and Access," in the current issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Information, with Richard Zeyen, Professor Emeritus, Department of Plant Pathology.  The Green Revolution project was funded by a grant from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (Legacy Fund) and digitized materials from the Norman Borlaug papers, among others.

Google Project - One Year in...
It was one year ago in April that the Libraries began participation in the Google non-destructive scanning project.  In that year, 118,837 library materials have been sent to Google, scanned, and returned to the Llibraries.  So far, the project has pulled materials primarily from the Wilson Library Annex and Periodicals, Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC), and the Entomology, Fisheries, and Wildlife Library (EFW).  During the course of the year, the Google Team overcame many obstacles and have honed the process.  Beginning in May 2011, the project will take on a new challenge as the process begins moving faster, going from an every four week shipping schedule to an every three week shipping schedule through the end of 2011.  Thanks to the project team for being up for all the challenges we put in front of them, including moving more rapidly.  Each person on the team contributes in their unique way to make this project a success.  A special thanks to all members of the team: Jerrie Bayer - Operations Manager, Chris Rose - ALEPH systems Coordinator, Wendy Kieser - Operations Supervisor, Emily Randall - Operations Supervisor, Karl Isely - Preservation, Amy Boemer and the Wilson Library Binding staff - Pete Rosenthal and Mark Desrosiers, Tim McCluske and his staff in MLAC/Minitex, Libraries Shipping Staff - Dave Ashley, John Barkman, and Kevin Poss, Connie Hendrick - Enterprise Technology, Google Project Work Group - Peggy Johnson (chair), Connie Hendrick, Bernadette Corley-Troge, John Butler, Naun Chew, Chris Rose, Jerrie Bayer, Charles Spetland, and Sue Hallgren.  Congratulations on a job well done!  Look for the Google Team in the Law library and continuing in MLAC for and EFW the summer.

Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) work with the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education

In fall 2009, André Nault suggested to the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education (JVME) that they consider an issue dedicated to "veterinary information/libraries".  JVME is published by the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and is the only journal dedicated to veterinary education.  His suggestion resulted in his appointment as guest editor for two special issues on this topic.  André has continued a relationship with JVME as a member of their editorial board.  The first issue has been published, with the next issue due out shortly.  André had the lead role in choosing paper topics and authors, which proved to be a unique opportunity for veterinary libraries to market themselves, market their activities, and educate readers consisting largely of veterinary college administrators and faculty.  The first issue had three articles published by HSL staff and colleagues:

Paul Zenke Referenced in Library Journal
In case you missed it, Steven Bell references the work of Paul Zenke and the Reinventing Reference Collaborative in his May 5, 2011, column for Library Journal: http://z.umn.edu/3fy.  In the article, Bell talks about the value of instructional designers to academic librarians, technology with a purpose, and the value of workplace collaboration.  Nice recognition for terrific work.

The Medical Library Association Comes to Town!

After two years of intense planning, the Medical Library Association annual meeting takes place at the Minneapolis Convention Center May 13 through 18, 2011.  The meeting usually attracts between 2,000 and 2,500 attendees.  Many Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) staff have been involved, including local assistance co-chair Linda Watson; volunteer coordination by Katherine Chew; space, maps, and signs by Steve Llewellyn and Der Yang; catering help by Michelle Orr; facilities use agreements by Bernadette Corley Troge; technical support  by Michael Winters; and tours by Del Reed, Linda Watson, Jim Beattie, Elaine Challacombe, and Lois Hendrickson.  At the meeting itself, many HSL staff will be volunteering, attending, and presenting.  Diehl Hall will host several events (coping with Light Rail Transit construction in order to direct people here has been a real challenge!).  Some events during the meeting:

Libraries staff are using Google Docs more and more.  While the word processing function in Google Docs is similar to MS Word, there are a few differences and fewer bells and whistles.  The biggest advantage to using Good Docs is the collaboration feature.  With Google Docs, you and your collaborators can edit a document simultaneously!  This is the first of our Google Docs classes, with classes in presentations, spreadsheets, and sites soon be available.  By the end of this clas,s you should be able to create a new text document, import an existing document,  work with text, insert images, insert headers, insert tables, print a document, and work collaboratively with others.

Incorporating Universal Design principles promotes more learning, for more students, while increasing instructor satisfaction.  The focus of this workshop, therefore, is the application of these design principles through discussion, guided activities, and practical application to the participant's work.  Workshop objectives include:
- Establish a baseline understanding of Universal Design and how it generally applies to instruction.
- Link the principles of Universal Design to practices in design and delivery of courses, workshops, instructional resources or tools.
- Apply a Universal Design framework to the assessment and next-stage planning related to the participant?s work.
 
Workshop outcomes include:
- Participants will leave with strategies for incorporating principles of Universal Design into their work.
- Participants will be able to create a timeline for applying Universal Design to their work.
- Participants will be able to develop a plan for assessing their work that incorporates Universal Design principles.
