News from Around the Libraries

CIC Shared Storage Project
The Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC - Big 10 plus University of Chicago) has developed its portfolio of service collaborations over time, initially focusing on resource sharing, moving to joint licensing of electronic content, and partnering with Google on digitization.  In the changing context of collections and with increasing pressures of space and reliance on digital surrogates for use, CIC has more recently addressed the challenge of collection storage and preservation.

To better (and cost-effectively) manage collection resources, a program has been developed to share the costs of storing and managing older, redundant print materials.  The program will create a shared storage capacity at Indiana University using a portion of its storage facility.  The program will focus initially on complete journal volumes from three major scientific publishers (Elsevier, Wiley, Springer) with major content contributions from Indiana and several other institutions.  The program will commit to validation of the integrity of the collection at the volume level and long-term commitment to retention.

CIC institutions can choose to participate in this initiative, with cost benefits for early adoption.  Ten universities have opted to participate at this point.  Institutions can also choose whether to simply rely on the existence of the collection, to make local collection decisions in the context of the archive (e.g., withdrawing volumes locally), or to contribute to the shared collection.  The University of Minnesota Libraries has opted to join the program.  The full nature of our participation is not yet determined.  We will be identifying our potential to contribute and/or to withdraw volumes in the coming year, after we have more information about the initial contributions from Indiana.  More details will be shared in the near future.

John Cao Joins Computer Support
John Cao recently accepted the position of Computer Support Professional in Walter Library, effective July 1, 2011.  John was previously appointed to a six-month contract.  John is a valuable addition to Computer Support for East Bank and the Libraries.  The Libraries are grateful for all his efforts in support of staff in their computer needs.

Staffing Changes for the Organization Development Division
I'm very happy to announce that Jerilyn Veldof has accepted a reassignment as Organization Development (OD) Associate within the OD Division, beginning July 1, 2011.  Her new role will enable her to focus her attention and skills on the immediate and near term priorities that the OD Collaborative (ODC) has outlined for the Libraries, along with other projects.  Jerilyn and Sue Hallgren will continue as co-chairs of the ODC.

Come hear how some of your colleagues have used iPads in their worklife and enter to win a six month loan of an iPad.  Laura Dale Bishof, Mark Desrosiers, Jody Kempf, and Sarah Morean were the lucky winners of the loan of iPads at the 2010 Libraries Emerging Tech Expo.   They will be sharing their experiences using an iPad - what they liked, what they didn't like, how they used it - in an informal panel discussion.  Bring your questions and your own observations.  Light refreshments will be served

Enter to win the use of an iPad!
Through a random drawing and agreement forms, five Libraries staff members will each receive the loan of an Apple iPad for use on work-related activities from now until February 1, 2012.  Register for the drawing at: http://z.umn.edu/ipaddrawing .  You do not need to be present to win.
