News From Around the Libraries
Changes
Coming to Several Libraries Services Web Pages
Over the past several months, a
subgroup of the Web Presence Management Group (WPMG), working in partnership
with several Information Access and Delivery Serivices (IADS) staff, developed
a plan to revise the information on the web pages listed below (found on the
Services page on the Libraries website). The group's aim was to eliminate
duplicate content and make the presentation of the information more user
friendly.
The group has nearly completed its
work and will be making changes to this content in the first week of
January. In preparation for these changes, staff may wish to identify any
resources (e.g. Libraries web pages, brochures, handouts, training material,
etc.) that link to this information so that it can be reviewed and
appropriately updated after the changes have been made. Staff will be
notified when changes have been completed.

Google
Digitization Project Update
Beginning this fall, the schedule to
process and send items to be scanned by Google was scaled back from 44 carts on
a four week cycle to 20 carts on an eight week cycle. For our next
shipment in January 2010, pre-1923 items in the Wilson collections will be
sent. Project staff with support from the Forestry and Entomology,
Fisheries, and Wildlife Libraries is now finishing the reshelving of over
19,000 items returned in the latest shipment received back from the Google
scanning center. Our appreciation is also extended to Shipping and
Receiving staff whom have continually transferred the carts between the
libraries in a timely manner.

Strategic
Planning for Diversity Posted
During her professional development leave this summer, Jody Gray developed a toolkit on strategic planning for diversity in conjunction with the American Library Association (ALA) Office for Diversity. The Strategic Planning for Diversity web page is now available on the ALA website at: http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/diversity/diversityplanning.cfm . Through the resource collection, Jody shares her expertise with diversity planning with a national audience and outlines the steps and elements of developing a diversity plan for libraries. In addition to the ALA page, Jody created a site focusing on diversity and academic libraries to compliment the toolkit at: http://blog.lib.umn.edu/grayjl/diversitylibraries.
Please take a look at these resources and share the information with your
networks. Nice work, Jody!

Sub-group
Formed to Investigate Next Generation Subject/Course Pages
A sub-group of the Web Presence
Management Group has been formed to investigate next generation subject/course
pages. LibData has served us well for years, but advancements in content
management, interface functionality, and user expectations require that we
consider alternative applications or significant enhancements to LibData itself
for managing subject and course pages. This sub-group is charged to
investigate external library resource management tools, both commercial and
open-source, as well as the possibility of enhancing the LibData
system. We plan to solicit feedback from Libraries staff and we will be
developing recommendations in spring 2012. For more
information, visit: https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/Staff/WebPresenceManagementGroup .

Stress
Busters at Bio-Med
To relieve student stress as they
studied for finals, the staff in the Health Sciences Libraries offered a series
of wellness events, or Stress Busters!, between Monday and Wednesday last
week. In addition to cookies and cider, we took a page from the staff at
Magrath Library and offered pet therapy. Pat Seeley's beautiful husky,
Gabe, is a therapy dog, and people just loved spending time with him for an
hour each day. In addition, Boynton Health Services offered chair
massages - needless to say, the sign-up sheets were full. Many thanks to
all the staff who coordinated and publicized this event and made it so successful!

Students
Get a Break in Walter Library
Last Thursday evening, 250 students
showed up for refreshments, a coloring activity, prize drawing, short film
viewing, and trivia. All in all, it was a success, the students were thankful,
and we captured some fun photos, which may be viewed at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35511082@N06/sets/72157628443271363/show/ .
Thanks to Tim Engelstad, Tony Ihrig, Jon Jeffryes, Jody Kempf, Jenny Veile, the
Smart Learning Commons student staff, and all the people who donated books for
making this event possible!

Whether you want an introduction to a new citation manager or just an update on
new features, come learn about the four major citation managers we now teach:
RefWorks, Endnote, Zotero, and Mendeley. We'll focus first on a
lecture/demo of the four citation managers, followed by a conversation about
their key differences. There will then be an opportunity to learn about
Google Plus, as well as discussion of how we hope to promote the University
Libraries Personal Information Management expertise on campus.

Virtual
Symposium on Leadership in Today's Libraries
The Libraries are investing in
developing effective and successful leadership, particularly in this time of
transition. In support of this goal, you are invited to attend a virtual
symposium on leadership in today's libraries hosted by the Association for
Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS). The symposium brings
together thought-provoking speakers to talk about various aspects of
leadership. Staff supervisors/managers, committee chairs, and others
who are currently in leadership roles or interested in leadership roles will
find the symposium beneficial.
Schedule
and topics
The virtual symposium is comprised
of five one-hour sessions. Sessions will be broadcast live each day from
January 9 to 13, 2012, 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in room S-30B, Wilson
Library. Alternatively, you may elect to wait for announcement of the
recorded link in a future Monday Memo and view at your desk later. For
the topics and speakers, go to the ALA site at:
