News From Around the Libraries

Alma Update
The Alma working groups and leadership team are hard at work, each having had at least one meeting.  They are making progress, but are struggling to work at the higher 'elevation' needed at this point in the implementation process.  Working groups have reviewed their charges, looking for gaps and identifying overlapping issues.  The leadership team has nearly finalized a stakeholder analysis and a communications plan.  Group members are also becoming Google Hang-out experts.  Four members of the leadership team will be attending an Ex Libris change workshop and an Alma readiness meeting at the end of this month.  Keep an eye out for next month's update.

Last Call for Nominations - Friends of the Libraries Outstanding Library Student Employee and Staff Development Grants
There's still time to submit your applications!

Outstanding Library Student Employee nominations, which affirm the contributions made by our dedicated student employees, are due by Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 4:30 pm.  More details are available at: http://www.lib.umn.edu/friends/grants_awards .

The Staff Development Grant application deadline is Monday, March 12, 2012, at 4:30 pm.  The grant provides financial support for proposals offering significant professional development opportunities that fall outside general funding available from the University Libraries.  More details are available at: http://www.lib.umn.edu/friends/grants_awards .

We look forward to hearing from you!

Libraries' Videoconferencing Final Report Released
The project team for the Libraries' Videoconferencing Project has issued its final report, which can be accessed at: http://z.umn.edu/vcp1 .  The Libraries Cabinet has reviewed the report and has provided initial funding in support of recommendation #1: desktop-level hardware for one-to-one and few-to-few meetings.  Details on implementation of this recommendation are forthcoming.  Recommendation #2, which focuses on room-based meetings with group attendance and remote attendees, sets forth a six-month product review period that coincides with review work that the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is conducting of middle-tier options.  An implementation decision on at least one room-based installation will be made by August 2012.  As this phase of the Libraries' Videoconferencing Project concludes, we would like to acknowledge the terrific work of the project team: Michael Sutliff (chair), Kathy Allen, Sue Koelmel, Janet Roseen, Rob Strnad, and Jennifer Veile.  Thank you!
- John Butler and Jerilyn Veldof

Self Service Check Workstation Decommissioned
The Wilson Library 3M self-service check out machine has been removed and will not be replaced.  A number of factors lead to this decision, including the age of the workstation, outdated technology of the equipment, and overall cost of maintenance or replacement.  Additionally, use of the machine has declined slightly over the past few years as more need for mediated service has grown.

Staff Tidings and Kudos

East Asian Studies Librarian Selected
I'm happy to announce that Yao Chen will be the new East Asian Studies Librarian.  Her official start date has not yet been set, but we are in the works of making the necessary arrangements.  As you might recall, Yao recently earned her MLIS at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.  She also holds an MA in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at Xi'an Jiaotong University in Xi'an, China.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to meet with the candidates and to the search committee for their hard work in seeing the search through to a successful conclusion.
- Jennie Burroughs

Kudos From President Kaler
University President Kaler forwarded the following exchange via email:

"President Kaler,
...I am a professional in the community.  I am also a PhD candidate in the College of Education and Human Development, currently writing my dissertation...

...I am writing this note to inform you of the amazing and responsive library services and staff that serve as a wonderful asset of the U of M.  A later in life student and a fully engaged professional, the importance of remote access to the library and its staff is essential.  You need to know I could not have done my scholarly work without the amazing remote access of the library and the expertise of the staff.

On the phone, via email, and in person, the staff is exemplary.  Thank you."

President Kaler's reply:

"Thank you for sharing this - I am very pleased to hear about the good work of our people.  Best, Eric"

Get Ready for Performance Reviews!
Come to an Individual Goals Workshop for All Employees
Strong individual goals help move the Libraries forward, chart a clear direction, inspire you to stretch, and stimulate creativity and innovation.  Strong individual objectives are specific, measurable, aggressive (but attainable), and time bound.  If you are looking for support in creating and writing strong individual goals and objectives for your annual performance review, come to this workshop.  You will have the opportunity to practice writing actual goals and objectives of your own and will likely leave with some that you can actually use for the 2012/2012 performance year.
