News From Around the Libraries

Large Scale Inventory Project... Coming Soon
Beginning later this summer, the Inventory Project team will begin a nine-month project to scan items which will allow us to identify and correct issues around the library system.  The project charge is available on Netfiles for your information.  In the coming days, project members will be contacting staff at locations around the Libraries to discuss the various collections.  This information will help us set up the order of the scanning.  If you have questions, please contact Jackie Gulbranson at: jackieg@umn.edu or (612)624-0205.

Staff Tidings and Kudos

Come Wish Kate Brooks Well and Say Goodbye
As most of you already know, our friend Kate Brook's last day at the Libraries is Friday, July 13, 2012.  Please stop by the Wilson Library Staff Lounge on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm, to share a cup of coffee, a delectable treat, and wish Kate well in her new endeavors.

Discoverability Chapter Published
Add this to your reading list: Planning and Implementing Resource Discovery Tools in Academic Libraries, edited by Mary Pagliero Popp and Diane Dallis, was recently published by IGI Global.  This book includes a chapter written by Jan Fransen, Lara Friedman-Shedlov, Nicole Theis-Mahon, Stacie Traill, and Deborah Boudewyns, titled, "Setting a Direction for Discovery: A Phased Approach."  The chapter discusses the discoverability work done here at UMN.  In addition, the book contains references to the Phase 1 and Phase 2 reports in seven others chapters, further proof of the tremendous impact of the work done in our groups.

The book chapter by Minnesota authors is in the University Digital Conservancy (UDC) at: http://purl.umn.edu/126757 , and you can learn more about the full book at: http://www.igi-global.com/book/planning-implementing-resource-discovery-tools/62623 .  Congratulations to our authors.

Judy Wells Retirement and Business Liaison Changes
Judy Wells retired from the University Libraries last month after many years of exceptional service to the Libraries, the campus community, and beyond.  Judy will be greatly missed!  As we worked to come up with a transition plan for Judy's many responsibilities, the reorganization process afforded us the opportunity to look at redistributing her previous roles and responsibilities in new ways.  In order to accommodate the liaison portion of Judy's responsibilities, we have made some staffing shifts and changes within Academic Programs Social Sciences and Professional Programs.  Mary Schoenborn has agreed to take on a full time liaison role going forward and will be adding Accounting, Taxation, and Finance to her current liaison duties.  Much thanks to Judy for her years of service and to Mary for agreeing to take on this new role.

Temporary Appointment for Madonna Smith
I'm delighted to announce the temporary appointment of Madonna Smith within the Facilities and Operations Management (FOM) department.  Madonna brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from her positions in Minitex and Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Sciences (ABES) in St. Paul.  She will be assisting the various building managers throughout the summer, starting with the upgrades to the new Natural Resource Library.
