News From Around the Libraries

Community Fund Drive Starts Today
Today is the first day of the University of Minnesota's month-long Community Fund Drive ( www.umn.edu/cfd ).  Please check out the Libraries Community Fund Drive page at: http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cfd2012/ .  We are planning a number of activities to engage our colleagues in a conversation about how and why we give to our communities.  We will be hosting events on each of the Twin Cities campuses that will feature stories from across the Libraries about our favorite charities and stories about why we choose to give.  The first event will be a lunch in room 120,  Andersen Library on October 11, 2012 featuring free food from Pizza Luce.  We will also have events later in the month in Walter Library and in Saint Paul.  At each of these events - and at donation stations across the Libraries all through October - we will be collecting travel size toiletries such as, shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc., that will be collected for donation to The Wayside House.

There will also be a weekly trivia contest starting this Thursday, October 4, 2012 that will test your knowledge of local charities.  The prize will be a free bagel breakfast for your whole unit.  The winner will be selected at random from correct entries and announced in next week's Monday Memo.

To learn more about everything happening in October for the Community Fund Drive in the Libraries, visit: http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cfd2012/ .  It's easy to participate in this important drive and you can give to the federated charities represented or any qualifying organization.  Simply visit: www.umn.edu/cfd from your work or home computer and follow the simple directions.  Payroll Services will automatically deduct your contribution from your paycheck.

Madonna Smith Joins Libraries Facilities and Operations
I'm pleased to announce Madonna Smith has accepted the position as the Libraries Facilities and Operations Manager (FOM) Office Support Assistant.  In her new position, she will provide backup to the building managers and provide support to all of FOM.  Many of you may already have met Madonna when she worked for Minitex, as the temporary supervisor for the Entomology, Fisheries, and Wildlife, Forestry, and Plant Pathology Libraries and recently, as the temporary FOM Office Support Assistant.  She brings a host of skills and talents to the Libraries and I am delighted to have her as part of the FOM department.  Please join me in welcoming Madonna to the Libraries.

Natural Resources Library: Thank You!
A celebration of the Natural Resources Library's grand opening would not be complete without an acknowledgement of the many staff and students who made it all possible.  While not exhaustive, the following list includes many of the people who contributed a great deal of time, effort, and expertise.  Ultimately, their combined work ensured the success of the project and continues to enable a smooth transition for students and faculty on the St. Paul Campus.  The Natural Resources Library represents the combined efforts of many divisions: Research and Learning, Data and Technology, Content and Collections, Administration, Minitex, and the Health Sciences Libraries.  When it comes to merging two libraries, the phrase "it takes a village"  rings true, and what an exceptional village it is!  Please join me in celebrating the accomplishments of our colleagues!

Thank you to Dave Ashley, John Barkman, Jerrie Bayer, Amy Boemer, Laureen Boutang, Krista Brickbauer, Bernadette Corley-Troge, Kristia Davern, Linda Eells, Betsy Friesen, Nick Fugate, Cecilia Genereux, Amy Gmur, Fariha Grieme, Linda Gries, Bert Guter, Sue Hallgren, Connie Hendrick, Philip Herold, Heather Hessel, James Hove, Erik Jackson, Laurie Jedamus, Michael Johnson, Julie Kelly, Ashley Kes, Tony Kieser, Wendy Kieser, Chris Koehler, Maribeth Kraus, Scott Marsalis, Ryan Mattke, Tim McCluske, Marlys McGuire, Mary Miller, Cheryl Owens, Jeff Peterson, Kevin Poss, Emily Randall, Alice Richardson, Chris Rose, Andrew Sattler, Neven Selimovic, Barb Smith, Madonna Smith, Rob Strnad, Nicole Theis-Mahon, and Karen Williams.
