News From Around the Libraries

Personal Archiving Video Tutorial
The Personal Archiving group (a PIM sub-group) created a 3 minute video tutorial Digital Notes Workflow. A survey of First Year students revealed that keeping track of digital notes was challenging. The video addresses this with a quick easy workflow that encourages them to use personal archiving best practices to save their semester's work.

Watch the video and view a digital note taking software matrix at the Personal Archiving page http://z.umn.edu/personalarchiving or link to it from the Library's home page under Researcher and Instructor Support. Special thanks to narrator Carolyn Rauber.
- Lisa Johnston, Jody Kemp, Lois Hendrickson, Amy Neeser, and Scott Spicer

Finals Week Space Jam
A special thanks to Becky Adamski, Bill Pederson, Danika Stegeman, Lynne Beck, Nancy Herther, and everyone else who helped make Wilson Library's Finals Space Jam a smashing success. The event was held on Monday the 13th, and over 100 students showed up! They watched Star Trek, worked on space-themed puzzles & coloring, munched on snacks & candy, and they simply enjoyed taking advantage of the opportunity to have a break from studying. As for the students who didn't come to the Space Jam, they have enjoyed the leftover candy, snacks, and yo-yos that were made available at service points in both the Wilson and Music Library. We've also had great participation on the giant crossword puzzle that was set up in the 1st floor lobby of Wilson Library. By all appearances, students really appreciated having these little pick-me-ups during Finals Week.
- Artie Byron

Liaison Training Program in Scholarly Communication/Publishing
During an informal survey conducted by the Scholarly Communications Collaborative about training for recent hires, the need for more formal training was expressed. In response, the Scholarly Communications Collaborative has created a training program for new or recently hired liaisons that can also serve as a refresher for established liaisons on the topic of scholarly publishing and communications. This training program includes background information on scholarly communication, author's rights/copyright, engaging with faculty, students and administrators, open access and the future of scholarly communications.

The training program currently consists of four modules. These modules are a combination of self-directed / self-paced learning - readings, videos, quizzes - along with workshop/labs. The first module, Access, will be launched during the first week in June. To prepare for the training program, the ScholComm Collaborative is recommending that all potential participants view the following video: "Open Access Explained!" (http://www.phdcomics.com/tv/#015). It is a little over 8 minutes long, narrated by Nick Shockey and Jonathan Eisen and animated by Jorge Cham who does the PhD comic. It is a short overview of the history of scholarly publishing and the issues surrounding access.

A Google Site has been created that will serve as an informational site and archive for the training materials. The Purpose, Scope and Outcome of the training program is also there.

While it is highly recommended that all recent liaison hires attend the program, it is open to all staff that has an interest in scholarly communications or may need a refresher. Check with your supervisor to see if you should participate.
- Katherine Chew, Chair, Scholarly Communications Collaborative

U Market and You (and Libraries Purchasing)
You may have received emails or viewed a presentation about U Market, the new Amazon-like purchasing system that will replace the University Stores and other purchasing gateways. U Market will have expanded offerings for many kinds of supplies, including computer hardware and software. It could offer many efficiencies across the University both on the customer-facing end, and perhaps more so in behind-the-scenes operations.

When the system becomes available in July, Libraries purchasing units will be piloting the limited use of shopping carts in selected locations, to get a sense of how the system works and where any pain points might appear.

For everyone else, please continue to follow regular Libraries procedures for requesting supplies, services and equipment until we announce any changes. P-Card use guidelines are not changing at this time. If you have questions, contact Judy Novak or Cathy Tweedie.
- Cathy Tweedie

IMAGES to Be Retired
The Digital Library Services department will be retiring the old IMAGES digital library system on June 3, 2013. IMAGES was the forerunner to the UMedia Archive and provided access to a number of the Libraries' digital collections.

A few things to note about the IMAGES system:
No new records have been added to IMAGES since at least 2006.
All of the collections in this system were migrated to the UMedia Archive several years ago, with many additional collections also available through this new digital library.
DLS has worked hard with those units who have collections in the old IMAGES system to ensure that the UMedia Archive continues to meet their patrons' needs.
The hardware supporting the IMAGES application is old and needs to be retired. There is no interest on the part of Data & Technology in having to continue to support two digital library systems.
For those of you who believe you may still be linking from your web pages to IMAGES, I ask that you please take some time to update your links to point to the UMedia Archive.

Thanks in advance for your understanding as we retire our legacy digital library system. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
- Jason Roy

Staff Tidings and Kudos

New Digital Humanities Specialist
I'm pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the search for the Digital Humanities Specialist search. Justin Schell will be joining us in this role on July 1. Justin just completed his PhD in Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society from the University of Minnesota this spring. He has experience as a Digital Content Library Fellow and as a Research Assistant with the Immigration History Research Center. This position is part of the CLIR Postdoctoral Fellowship in Academic Libraries program and is a two-year appointment. Mark your calendars for October 28-29, 2013 and plan to meet us in Roseville, Minnesota at the Radisson Hotel. The biennial UMWUG conference of regional Ex Libris users offers an opportunity to share information, experiences, best practices, and works in progress in an informal, collegial environment.

The planning committee wants to present the kind of program YOU would like to attend. Our community of users has always been willing to share their Ex Libris product and project expertise with colleagues. Done an inventory project lately? Implementing a new system? Rethought your workflows? Please consider presenting at this local conference.

Please submit your proposals via this link: http://umwug.odin.nodak.edu/2013_proposal_submission by May 17, 2103. Acceptance notifications will be sent by July 1, 2013.
- Betsy Friesen and Becky Rinhwelski (for the UMWUG planning committee)

Update on the Libraries Staff Web and Document Management Project
Since our presentation at the last Libraries Assembly, 30 people from across the Libraries came to one of three focus group conversations (including one in St. Paul with the entire ABES department!). During these one and a half hour sessions participants were asked about both the staff website and Libraries-wide file sharing. We learned about people's content needs for a new staff website, ideas for managing a staff website and file sharing system, and needs for restricted access and privacy for these systems.

Input from the focus groups was applied immediately to the development of several staff website prototypes. In order to test how well these sites were working, project team members facilitated 12 staff through usability testing on May 1. Testing confirmed that the design is on the right track and helped us identify a number of chances to improve usability.

What's next? The project team is now finishing draft recommendations and will start soliciting staff feedback over the next couple of weeks. Migration to the new staff web site and file storage space (and training!) is planned for this summer.
- Libraries Staff Web and Document Management Project Team

Law Library/University Libraries Separate Record Policy Terminated
Effective May 12, 2013, the Libraries will discontinue the practice of creating separate bibliographic records for copies of the same title held at multiple locations, including those held at Law and non-Law libraries. All holdings for manually cataloged items will be attached to the same bibliographic record. This change of practice will be adopted immediately, and is not conditional on success in merging existing duplicate records.

Duplicate records will be created only within clearly defined categories. Coordinate campus orders via the YBP system will continue to be a permitted exception to the no-duplicate policy. MARCIt and ebook batch record loads will be a permitted exception until the Libraries complete their migration to Alma. Responsibility for vetting further exceptions will rest with the Alma Data Policy and Standards Working Group.
For fuller details, please see the policy document at: http://z.umn.edu/drg
- Betsy Friesen (for the Alma Implementation Team)

Website and MNCAT (Primo) Downtime
The Libraries' main web site (www.lib.umn.edu and any branch, collection, or other sites under www.lib), Health Sciences Libraries web sites (hsl.lib.umn.edu and sites under hsl.lib), and MNCAT (Primo) will be unavailable for up to an hour this Sunday, May 16th, beginning at 7:30 a.m. while OIT staff move these systems under a new load balancer appliance. Due to the nature of this change, we will not be able to offer even a minimal web site during this outage. Notices will be posted on MNCAT and the web site this week. Janet Arth, Erik Biever, Lois Christian, Betsy Friesen, Fariha Grieme, Jeff Peterson, Chris Rose, and Stacie Traill attended from the Twin Cities, as did colleagues from Morris (William Straub) and Duluth (Sunshine Carter, Darlene Morris, Shixing Wen ). The team joined meetings on the workings of the various Ex Libris products and learned much more about Alma and Primo from colleagues at other institutions. Erik presented as part of a panel on "Aleph upgrades and releases: client installation perspective," while Chris presented a session on simplifying our circulation policies, called "When are my books due back? How the University of Minnesota has utilized Alma implementation to simplify circulation policies." Betsy presented a data clean-up session, "Dirty data: cleaning up your act for system migration." Betsy and Stacie attended the Technical Seminar for some very useful hands-on experience with Alma and Primo. Finally, a few brave souls--Betsy, Stacie, Sunshine, with colleagues David Schuster and Leah Hamrick (Texas Woman's University) and Helen Loosli (UNILINC, Australia)--entertained crowds with a rousing rendition of A.L.M.A. As a teaser, see http://youtube/nTY80PIurx8. News From Around the Libraries

Expanded Extended Study Hours Access at Bio-Medical Library
Since April 1, the Bio-Medical Library has expanded extended study hours access to its entire 2nd floor for UCard holders until 3am during semesters. Opening the east side (stacks side) of the floor for late night study, in addition to the currently open west side (computer side) of the floor, provides:

additional 100 seats available to the 152 seats already offered
additional 4 group study rooms available to the 9 rooms already offered
additional 16,363 square feet of floor space available to the 9,500 sf already offered

Internal security enhancements of a programmable card reader in the stacks elevator and a crash bar on the stacks stairwell allows us to restrict access to the upper floors of the library during extended hours, so this program expansion can be accomplished without hiring additional security monitors.
- Steve Llewellyn

Reminder about the Equity and Diversity Certificate Program
The Diversity Outreach Collaborative wants to remind staff about the Equity and Diversity Certificate program provided by the Office for Equity and Diversity. This is a great professional development resource that supports the concept that "equity and diversity is everyone's everyday work." The basic certificate includes a series of six workshops designed to give you a conceptual framework, develop the necessary skills, and opportunities for self reflection and group discussion, as well as a chance to think about specific outcomes and next steps. There is also an advanced certificate for those who are interested in a bit of a deeper dive. The summer schedule is now available here https://diversity.umn.edu/equitydiversitycertificate. There is also a link from the Libraries' Learning and Development web page: https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/SEDP/HomePage.html. If you have questions feel free to contact me directly.
- Lara Friedman-Shedlov (on behalf of the Diversity Outreach Collaborative)

Deadline Extended to May 8th for Library Committee Nominations!
The Committee on Nominations, Elections and Appointments would like to thank everyone who submitted nominations over the last week. We are still, however, just shy of enough candidates to fill the open positions.

Nominations will continue to be accepted through the end of Wednesday, May 8th. Please consider running for a position.

You may submit your name for more than one position. For instance, if you submitted your name for Research and Publications Committee of Librarian Personnel Committee, you could also submit it for Executive Committee. If submitting your own name, please include a 1-3 sentence biosketch and reason for running for the office. All submissions can be sent to Jonathan Koffel (jbkoffel@umn.edu).

Positions open this election cycle are:
Library Assembly Secretary (one position, 1 year term)
Executive Committee Members-at-Large (three positions, 1 year term)
Research and Publications Committee (three positions, 2 year terms)
University Senate (one senator, 3 year term, three alternates (election runner-ups), 1 year term)

Don't forget to submit your nominations to Jonathan Koffel (jbkoffel@umn.edu) by May 8th!
- Jonathan Koffel (on behalf of CNEA)

Primo Management Group Sunsetted
We have sunsetted the Primo Management Group PMG), which guided Primo (MNCAT) enhancements, upgrades, configuration, interface changes and more since 2007. A number of developments led to this decision, including:

The launch of the Primo Central Implementation project, on which a number of PMG members are currently serving. With focus on the implementation project, there is not much that we wish to advance (and, therefor, manage) with the current Primo instance.
The recognition that post-implementation Primo Central management will have an altered scope, with some different expertise required and likely a new group constituted to oversee it.

Many thanks to the past and current members of the PMG for their leadership and contributions. The most recent members of the PMG have been: Naun Chew (chair, since PMG's inception), Anne Beschnett, Jan Fransen (now co-chair of the Primo Central Implementation project team), Susan Gangl, Connie Hendrick, Kristen Mastel, Darlene Morris (UMD), Jeff Peterson (now co-chair of the Primo Central Implementation project team), and William Straub (UMM).
- John Butler

New HathiTrust Interface Design
The HathiTrust Digital Library (http://www.hathitrust.org/) has released a new design and new features for its website. The new design incorporates feedback submitted by HathiTrust users and input from HathiTrust's User Experience and Communications working groups. Some of the highlights include:

Look and feel - HathiTrust has been given a fresh, user-friendly design that unifies all parts of the website.
Accessibility - HathiTrust continues its tradition of style with function, paying particular attention to accessibility in major and minor functional components of the interface.
An engaging homepage - A consolidated search area and prominent links to user collections, hand-picked books, and the mobile interface, invite users to explore the HathiTrust collection. Links to social media, the HathiTrust Research Center, and HathiTrust projects provide updates on activities and invite engagement.
Login benefits - Users can now log in from anywhere on the site, and the login area of the homepage highlights the benefits of logging in to users from partner institutions.
Improvements to the reading interface - Our new online reading interface increases the amount of space available for reading books, while still keeping reading controls and bibliographic information readily accessible.
Persistent tabbed search box - Options for searching the bibliographic catalog and full-text of works have been combined into a single tabbed search, with help information to guide users in deciding which search to use. A persistent search header allows searches to be performed from any page on the website.

Take a look and offer your feedback.
- John Butler

Building Hours Extended for the End of the Semester
Beginning this past weekend and continuing through the last day of spring semester finals (May 18), some library locations will provide extended access hours to their buildings:

Bio-Medical (Diehl Hall): 24/7 access between May 3-18. It looks like everyone was awake because 100% of you said that yes indeed, Google Sites, and yes indeed, Google Drive will be our official Libraries staff website and file sharing system. Victory! Plus, 18% of you want to be Masters of the Google Universe, and 40% want to be highly skilled users. Fantastic! Thanks too for letting us know your learning preferences. Hands-on Libraries workshops and webinars are the clear favorites. Stay tuned next for opportunities to help us test a staff website prototype!
- Libraries Staff Web and Document Management Project Team

Committee on Nominations, Elections and Appointments Seeking Nominations
The Committee on Nominations, Elections and Appointments is seeking nominations for library governance committees. The Gopher is now available in UMedia for browsing and full-text searching. See: http://umedia.lib.umn.edu/taxonomy/term/819.

Recently, a note was sent in expressing appreciation for the availability of this resource.

My parents will be 93 & 90 on 4/22 & 4/30. They met at the U and will be married 70 years on 11/9/2013. Being able to go through the year books, when I knew they were in college, was really a joy. They were only in 6 pictures but to me, these are priceless. Until they had to move into assisted living my mother had held onto her Gopher's.She has dementia but I am sure she shall remember these great times in their lives. Same for Dad.

Special thanks to Jason Roy, Erin George, and all the staff at Digital Library Services who helped to get the yearbooks online.
- Erik Moore

New Regents Materials in the University Digital Conservancy
The Board of Regents recently updated their website and decided to move all of their locally hosted minutes and dockets into the University Digital Conservancy for long-term digital preservation and improved accessibility. The UDC was already home to digitized minutes of the Regents from 1889 through 2001. Now, the addition of the born-digital minutes & dockets through 2012 create a nearly complete, full-text searchable run.

As is the case with website transitions, most of the work happens in a relatively short time frame. This project was no exception. In a three day period University Archives staff including Erin George and archives student Dusti Boyum normalized individual item names, uploaded the materials, and created the basic metadata for 654 born-digital files. This was a major accomplishment and was sincerely appreciated by Board of Regents staff. Thank you Erin & Dusti!
- Erik Moore

Security Process Review
The Security Process Review charter and final report can be found on the Libraries staff web page under Library Projects - http://wiki.lib.umn.edu/Staff/ProjectCharters.html, under the heading Security Process Review Project. As part of the review, an updated incident form and trespass FAQ can be found on the Security Committee webpage http://wiki.lib.umn.edu/SecurityCommittee/HomePage.html.

For questions please contact Matt Bowers, Amy Boemer or Mark Desrosiers.
- Amy Boemer

Staff Tidings and Kudos

Mary Mortenson Retirement
Mary Mortenson has retired as of April 25, 2013. The survey results cover faculty behavior around research, teaching, and library perception and use.

Ithaka Report: http://www.sr.ithaka.org/research-publications/us-faculty-survey-2012

The random sample of 5,261 faculty members replied to questions developed in consultation with an advisory committee of librarians, publishers, and a scholarly society executive. In addition to long-standing topics like the importance of libraries to the respondents' work and their comfort levels with shifting library collections from print to digital, the survey also covers the expanding role of ebooks, developments in teaching methods, and the factors that shape research topics and projects. The survey, implemented using a rigorous methodological approach, also provides unique insight in its ability to track change over time against surveys conducted in 2003, 2006, and 2009.
- Lisa Johnston

Candidates for Digital Humanities Specialist / CLIR postdoctoral fellow
Wednesday, May 1, 2013
1:15pm
310 Walter Library
Erin Jerome, CV: https://netfiles.umn.edu/ul/LibrariesWide/AcademicSearches/EJerome.pdf

Friday, May 3, 2013
1:15pm
310 Walter Library
Justin Schell, CV: https://netfiles.umn.edu/ul/LibrariesWide/AcademicSearches/JSchell.pdf

Please save the date for two upcoming interviews for the Digital Humanities Specialist position. Under the leadership of Naun Chew and Mary Huismann, several of our catalogers (Doris Seely, Maribeth Kraus, Tony Fang, Christine DeZelar-Tiedman, Connie Anderson) contributed cataloging records for external review by Larisa Walsh at the University of Chicago. In her report to the Library of Congress, Ms. Walsh wrote, "I am very happy to report that University of Minnesota Library is finished with the external RDA review. Catalogers at the MNU have done wonderful job with learning and applying RDA rules properly, it was a real pleasure working with them."

BIBCO (Monographic Bibliographic Record Cooperative Program) is a cooperative cataloging venture of the Library of Congress' Program for Cooperative Cataloging. BIBCO institutions contribute high-quality cataloging to the program. The hallmark of the BIBCO record is that authorized headings support those access points which call for established forms. Institutions must apply to the program, be active contributors to LC's Name Authority Cooperative Program, and have earned OCLC enhance status, among other requirements.
- Betsy Friesen for DMA

2013 Staff Recognition Call for Volunteers
The Staff Recognition Planning Group is starting its work for 2013 summer event and we would love your help! We are looking for volunteers who are interested in creating a fun event to recognize the contributions of our fabulous staff. This is a great way to get involved and meet other staff members from across the Libraries. We welcome those with event planning or project management skills or who want to gain experience in these areas. We look forward to hearing from you.

If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Amy Neeser at nees0017@umn.edu or 612-624-7899.
- Amy Neeser & Michelle Orr, on behalf of the Staff Recognition Group

Diversity Outreach Collaborative Calendar and Blog
A friendly reminder, that the Diversity Outreach Collaborative maintains a Google calendar of relevant equity and diversity trainings on campus that can be found at http://z.umn.edu/uldiversitycal or if searching within Google calendar, it is titled "Diversity Outreach Collaborative Calendar."

In addition, we maintain a blog, "Diversity Outreach Collaborative Blog," that highlights events in more depth and provides other resources of interest: http://blog.lib.umn.edu/grayjl/doc/.

- Jody Gray, on behalf of the Diversity Outreach Collaborative

Another Chance to Shape the New Staff Website and/or Libraries' Shared File Space
We know that the Staff Website (aka Staff Wiki) and the way we manage our shared documents (aka Netfiles) is important to many of you. Nearly 20 staff participated in an input session a few weeks ago and 12 did a labeling exercise with us last week to help us categorize many of the common files we have in the Libraries.

Now here's your opportunity to weigh in and tell the Libraries Staff Web and Document Management Project Team what is important to you. Feel free to take one of the surveys - or both. They're quick!

Survey 1: Libraries Shared File Space (e.g. Google Drive and Netfiles) - http://z.umn.edu/sharedfilessurvey
Survey 2: Libraries Staff Website (e.g. the Staff Wiki) - http://z.umn.edu/staffwebsurvey

Your input will help us focus on what matters to you and prioritize a wish list for the future. Anne presented to 100 students on searching PubMed and Ruby called out her session as "highly informative and provided fantastic insight into what literature research can be like in the field of epidemiology."

Jim Beattie received some very nice comments this week from Brad Clarke, the course director for the Foundations of Critical Thinking (FCT) course for 1st and 2nd year medical students. This class uses facilitators to present cases to students and Jim is facilitating sessions for both 1st and 2nd year students this year. Brad called Jim a "hugely important asset to both our students and the Medical School" and described his work as a FCT facilitator and mentor as an "unbelievable help to me and to both of the facilitating teams."

It is always nice to receive feedback and reinforcement from faculty about the value that liaison librarians bring to the educational missions of the schools we serve. Congratulations Jim and Anne.
- Lisa McGuire

Charles Potter is Leaving U Libraries
With sadness, we announce the departure of Charles Potter from Wilson AIS. Now he has accepted a bright and shiny new position with the Anoka County Government Center where I am sure his many talents will be put to great use. Charles has an amazing future ahead of him and I hope you will join me in wishing him the very very best!

Charles' last day is officially Sunday, April 14th, but for most of you who don't work weekends, your last opportunity to say farewell may be Thursday, April 11.
- Elena Carrillo

Upcoming Events
Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys
An Intergenerational Film and Conversation Event
Monday, April 8, 2013
6:30 - 8:30PM
Saint Paul Area Council of Churches, 1671 Summit Ave., St. Paul 55105

This event will feature the 60-minute film, "Prince Among Slaves," and will be followed by a conversation among attendees, facilitated by Joan Haan and Fardosa Hassan. News From Around the Libraries

Volunteers Needed for Poster Selection
Have you noticed the undergraduate poster presentations in Wilson, Walter, the Biomedical, and Magrath Libraries? Do you want to see the high-quality research our undergraduates are conducting? We'd appreciate your help as a volunteer to help select posters to be displayed from this year's Undergraduate Research Symposium. The posters displayed in the Libraries are selected by a group of volunteers from the Libraries, who spend part of the day of the Symposium evaluating the posters and talking with the student-presenters. The Symposium is on Friday, April 19, 2013 in the Great Hall at Coffman Memorial Union. There will be three shifts: Session 1 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm), Session 2 from 1:15 pm to 2:45 pm, and Session 3 from 3 pm to 4:30 pm. We need volunteers from all subject areas.

A brief list of criteria for selecting the posters will be shared before the symposium, as well as the abstracts from the presenters. On the day of the symposium, you can visit with the students and learn about their research and research processes. We also use this opportunity to promote the University Digital Conservancy (UDC) and encourage the students to deposit their poster in the UDC after the symposium. This is a fun opportunity to learn about the amazing research that University of Minnesota undergraduates are involved in.

If you're interested in volunteering, please contact Jody Kempf via phone at (612) 626-1676 or via email at j-kemp@umn.edu by April 8, 2013. Learn more about the Undergraduate Research Symposium at: http://www.urop.umn.edu/symposium.html
- Jody Kempf

Knight Foundation Interviews John Butler
John Butler was interviewed for the Knight Foundation's blog series on the Digital Public Library of America, for which the Minnesota Digital Library will be one of the first regional hubs. John explained the challenges and possibilities of working with massive data aggregation, as well as Minnesota's role in the DPLA. The focus will be on operational excellence, and some of the areas Lisa is involved in, like data management and repository services, will be fertile ground for that; her participation will help move the Libraries' strategic priorities forward. So also, thanks to Lisa for taking this on! And of course we hope it will be a valuable professional development experience.
- Kris Fowler

Praise for Jon Jeffryes' In-depth Reference Service
When CSE Dean Steven Crouch was recently elected to the US National Academy of Engineering--a major honor--Jon Jeffryes could reveal that he had been asked to provide information for this confidential nomination. Charles Fairhurst, Civil Engineering Professor Emeritus, writes that Jon's contribution was in fact critical to the successful outcome: "Without your diligent efforts to conduct journal searches and develop supporting material... I can assure you that our effort would not have succeeded. Dean Crouch was a strong candidate, but the criteria are very severe, and the information that you provided to me certainly helped 'tip the scales' in his favor. Thank you, Jon, for a job well done!" Prof. Fairhurst made sure to recognize Jon by sending me a copy of his letter, so I can join in thanking Jon for this contribution to the University's academic life and for providing such good library service!
- Kris Fowler

Kudos for Erik Moore
Erik Moore was recently elected to a three-year term to serve on the governing council for the Midwest Archives Conference (MAC). MAC is the nation's largest regional professional association for archivists spanning thirteen states and representing over a 1,000 archivists and curators and is the publisher of the peer-reviewed professional journal, Archival Issues. Congratulations, Erik!
- Kris Kiesling

Upcoming Events

E-book Brown Bag Discussion
Monday, April 1, 2013
11:30AM - 1:00PM
S30A Wilson Library

Bring your lunch and join in on a general discussion of e-books and the Libraries, including demand driven acquisitions (DDA) on Monday April 1, 11:30-1:00 in S30A Wilson Library. The transition for Developers, Business Analysts, Testers, and Project Managers can be very challenging. In some cases, Project Managers struggle with the focus shifting from administrative and coordinating skills to an emphasis on the people and soft skills. Developers, Business Analysts, and Testers struggle with what their role is now that their team is "cross-functional," empowered, and self-organizing. Organizations struggle in moving from a project, schedule, and cost driven structure to focusing more on values, commitments, and products. News From Around the Libraries

One for All: Volunteer Service Initiative Kick Off
The February 13 Brief highlighted a new campus campaign that is worth a second mention. Last month, the University of Minnesota launched the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Volunteer Pledge Drive to promote the opportunity of giving back to the community. Faculty staff and students who volunteer will work with individuals and organizations to address local needs ranging from child literacy and animal rescue to helping to build affordable housing.
Volunteers can pledge hours to any 501(c) nonprofit organization, including those for which they already volunteer on the pledge-drive website. Any number of hours may be pledged, there is no minimum. Anyone looking for a new volunteer opportunity can visit the websites of HandsOn Twin Cities and the United Way of Olmstead County Volunteer Center, which have partnered with the University for the drive.

Throughout the Library, staff volunteer in many different venues that strengthen our communities. The One for All campus campaign is a good opportunity to highlight those efforts towards the common good. For more information, read "One for All." The pilot project of the Twin Cities and Rochester campuses continues through May 17.
- Jerrie Bayer

January 2013 HathiTrust Update
Top news for last month includes the approval of the new bylaws by the HathiTrust partners and expansion of the HathiTrust resources page -- a growing list of user guides and "how to" created by HathiTrust partner libraries. Interesting tidbit: HathiTrust's most accessed volume in January (at 6,049 times) was the Investigation of Korean-American relations : Report of the Subcommittee on International Organizations of the Committee on International Relations, U.S. House of Representatives, October 31, 1978. The January issue can be accessed at: http://www.hathitrust.org/updates_january2013
- John Butler, relaying information from the HathiTrust Communications Working Group

Streamlining and Transferring Processes
With the University's emphasis on Operational Excellence, the Bio-Medical Library, Acquisitions and Resource Management (ARM) and Data Management and Access (DMA) departments have agreed that the time is right to begin planning to transition technical services processes from Bio-Med to Wilson Library. Time spent on technical services work in Bio-Med has decreased substantially in recent years, particularly with the increase in electronic resources. As a result, the Bio-Med tech services staff have developed new skills and are working in new strategic areas. They will remain in Bio-Med and continue to contribute to these new areas.

Therefore, our first goal is to review and streamline processes even further so that we minimize the impact on ARM and DMA as they absorb the remaining responsibilities. We are considering shelf-ready processes, ordering materials at time of selection, and increased reliance on demand-driven acquisitions and eBook options. We anticipate that the transition will be phased, with many of the changes implemented this summer and some continuing into the fall.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

- Betsy Friesen, Fariha Grieme, Janice Jaguszewski, and Nicole Theis-Mahon

In Memory of Ray Bohling
We have received word of the passing of Ray Bohling, whom some of the Libraries staff may know from his tenure here. An obituary can be found at : http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Raymond-Bohling&lc=4209&pid=163049440&mid=5421854
- Wendy Lougee

Staff Tidings and Kudos

Farewell to Jen Peters
Jen Peters, our talented and beloved graphic designer, has accepted a new position as Senior Designer for the Three Rivers Park District in Plymouth. Her last day with the Libraries is Wednesday, March 6. For anyone who has worked with Jen, this is obviously sad news for us. But it's a great opportunity for Jen and a significant step forward in her career. We will be hosting a farewell reception for Jen on Wednesday, March 6, 9 to 10 a.m., in the staff lounge, 4th floor, Wilson Library. Please stop by if you can.
- Mark Engebretson

Lisa Johnston and Jon Jeffryes Published in the Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering
In case you didn't already see this tweeted by DigitalKoans (it's going viral!): Lisa Johnston's and Jon Jeffrye's article about their data information literacy needs assessment is now available in the Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering: "Data Management Skills Needed by Structural Engineering Students: A case study at the University of Minnesota" http://ascelibrary.org/doi/pdf/10.1061/(ASCE)EI.1943-5541.0000154 . It is particularly significant that this is going out to the engineering community. Well done, Lisa and Jon!
- Kris Fowler

Kirsten Clark Receives the 2013 Documents to the People Award
Congratulations to Kirsten Clark who has been awarded the 2013 Proquest/GODORT/ALA Documents to the People Award. This award is a tribute to an individual, library, institution, or other non-commercial group that has most effectively encouraged the use of government documents in support of library service. Kirsten is nationally known as an innovator in the area of government information. She has held a number of positions with the Government Documents Round Table (GODORT), culminating with her election to the three year cycle as Chair Elect, Chair, and Immediate Past Chair. She is a most deserving recipient so please share your congratulations when you next see her.
- Karen Williams

Upcoming Events

E-book Brown Bag Discussion
Monday, April 1, 2013
11:30-1:00 pm
S30A Wilson Library

Bring your lunch and join in on a general discussion of e-books and the Libraries, including demand driven acquisitions (DDA) on Monday April 1, 11:30-1:00 in S30A Wilson Library. April 10, 2013, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, in Coffman Memorial Union. As we did last year, the Libraries will be providing lightweight coordination of the presentation proposals to avoid similar ideas competing with each other. To assist with the process, a spreadsheet Academic Technology Showcase 2013 Library Submissions document has been created so Libraries applicants can supply their proposal information. If you are interested in submitting a proposal, please check the spreadsheet before doing so to see what your colleagues may have already submitted or are considering submitting. Please note, presenters will need to submit their proposals directly to the Showcase at: http://www.cehd.umn.edu/showcase/ . The deadline for submissions is February 20, 2013.

The Showcase offers the opportunity for us to show off some of the great work the Libraries are doing around technology in the areas of teaching, learning, and research.
- Jerrie Bayer

Libraries Inventory of Social Media
University Libraries Communications is conducting an inventory of social media sites that represent the University of Minnesota Libraries. Congratulations Jim.
- Lisa McGuire

Jim Stemper Transitioning to Organizational Data Strategist Role
A common and increasing need raised in all areas of last year's organization review was for greater cohesiveness and control over the metrics about ourselves as an organization and the resources and services we provide (i.e., Libraries' input, outputs, outcomes, etc.). Over the past year or so, Jim Stemper has led a project to assess our current state in this area, to establish principles for moving forward, and to select the technology that will enable the Libraries to manage and more readily access its organizational data. With these foundational pieces now in place and beginning this month, Jim will transition from his role as the Libraries's first Electronic Resources Librarian (ERL), since 2001, to a new role - Organizational Data Strategist. This position will reside in the Data Management and Access department in the Data and Technology division, and report to Betsy Friesen. Jim's ERL responsibilities will be assumed by a new position in the Acquisitions and E-Resources (ARM) department. A search for that position will begin soon. Until that position is appointed, Jim has graciously agreed to continue his licensing and related collections responsibilities, including service on the Collections Council. He will also share his expertise and experience, providing guidance and mentorship to the new appointee. Please join us in congratulating Jim on his new role and in thanking him for his notable contributions in Collection Development and Management over the past decade.
- John Butler, Charles Spetland, and Betsy Friesen

Upcoming Events

February's Project and Group Management (PGM) Forum: "Effective Project Communication: Keeping Everyone in the Loop"
Wednesday, February 27, 2013
2:00 pm to 3:30 pm
Room 120, Elmer L. HathiTrust.
- many new partners and a new governance structure.
- a steady stream of technological improvements and enhancements.
- development of new services and infrastructure.
- continued engagement with our community in the form of presentations, discussions, and the HathiTrust Research Center Uncamp.

A recap of activities in these areas and more can be read in the review at: http://www.hathitrust.org/updates_review2012 .
- John Butler, relaying the message of the HathiTrust Communications Working Group

Upcoming Events

Active Shooter Presentation
Tuesday, February 5, 2013
2:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Room 120, Elmer L.
